Number 7 RINGVE MUSEUM
Ringve Museum
Visit the Ringve Museum, which is Norway's national museum of music and musical instruments, for a longer and more in-depth look at Norwegian and European music. It has two permanent shows: the Museum in the Manor House, which has musical instruments from Europe, and the Museum in the Barn, which shows how modern sound and lighting technology works.

Number 6 STIFTSGARDEN
Stiftsgarden
In 1778, wealthy Christine Schller built Stiftsgrden as her own home. When the Norwegian royal family comes to Trondheim, they stay there as their official residence. This mansion has more than 100 rooms and is one of the largest wooden buildings in Europe. It is a great example of Baroque architecture from the 18th century. Since 1800, royals and their guests have stayed in the mansion. A guided tour of its luxurious rooms will give you a good idea of how the social elite lived.

Number 5 ARCHBISHOP’S PALACE AND MUSEUM
Archbishop's Palace and Museum
The mediaeval Archbishop's Palace is not only the oldest building of its kind in Scandinavia, but it is also one of the best-preserved palaces of its kind in Europe. The west wing of the palace dates back to the late 12th century. It now has a number of historical displays, such as the Norwegian Crown Regalia exhibit, which is a stunning collection of Norway's beautiful crown jewels.

Number 4 ROCKHEIM
Rockheim
Pop and rock music fans will enjoy this trip down memory lane and the chance to hear some of Norway's best. The museum's collections are on display, and there are also interactive exhibits, videos, and audio recordings to listen to and watch. Through sounds and videos of performances, the permanent exhibit The Time Tunnel brings the history of modern Norwegian music and culture from the 1950s to the present day to life. Different exhibits look at different parts of music and culture.

Number 3 KRISTIANSTEN FORTRESS
Kristiansten Fortress
Kristiansten Fortress was built between 1681 and 1695 on a hill to the east of the city to protect it from attacks. Even though it is a bit of a climb, the tower and its small museum are free to visit, and the views of the city are beautiful. The Nazis held members of the Norwegian Resistance in these cells during their occupation of Norway during World War II. There is also a memorial to those who were put to death here.

Number 2 EXPLORE BAKKLANDET AND GAMLE BYBRO (OLD TOWN BRIDGE)
Explore Bakklandet and Gamle Bybro (Old Town Bridge)
Cross the river Nidelva on the red arches of the Gamle Bybro (Old Town Bridge) to get to the Bakklandet neighbourhood with its pretty streets and colourful old homes. It feels like a small village, and the old wooden buildings along the river have been turned into shops, galleries, coffee shops, and restaurants.

Number 1 NIDAROS CATHEDRAL
Nidaros Cathedral
Nidaros Cathedral is thought to be the most beautiful church in Scandinavia. It was built by King Olav Kyrre between 1066 and 1093 over the tomb of Norway's patron saint, St. Olav. The cathedral is the northernmost mediaeval cathedral in the world, and it is one of the best places to visit in the city. Kings were born and buried here, and since 1814, the Norwegian constitution says that the monarch must be crowned in Trondheim Cathedral.

Trondheim, Norway City Guide! Complete firsthand travel guide - everything you need to see!

Norway is an incredible country filled with natural beauty at every turn. But for most visitors, they stay further south in some of the well-known places like Oslo. Today I'll tell you about a fantastic city located up in Central Norway - Trondheim. It may not be as big as some of the other cities, but it has a lot packed in!

It's downtown area is nearly surrounded by water, with Trondheim Fjord on one side and the Nidelva River snaking around the other sides. You can see some amazing tourist sites like Nidaros Cathedral (and it's central tower), the Archbishop's Palace (and it's museum), the Norwegian Crown Regalia, Stiftsgården (Trondheim Royal Palace), the Church of Our Lady, Kristiansten Fortress, the Old Town Bridge (Gamle Bybro), the Gate of Happiness, the Historic Wharves, Bakklandet, Nordre Gate, the King Olav Tryggvason statue, and more! There are also so many fantastic ways to experience the natural beauty, like taking a boat tour in the fjord or taking a hike along Lade trail. And guess what? Because it is so far north, in summer it almost never gets fully dark! So much great stuff to do, and even some great traditional Central Norwegian foods, like Sodd.

Check out this video to learn about all of the great things I saw and did in beautiful Trondheim, Norway!

Although bite-sized by European standards, Trondheim is in fact Norway’s third largest city, and lies in the Trøndelag county where the Nidelva River empties into the Trondheimsfjord. The city was rebuilt according to a Baroque plan following a fire in the 17th century and is under the watch of the second largest cathedral in northern Europe.

From 1164 to 1906 this was where Norway’s kings were crowned, and the adjacent Archbishop’s Palace holds the country’s crown jewels, or Regalia of Norway.

Trondheim has more than 30,000 students, infusing the city with style and nightlife. And sightseers can saunter through the cute Bakklandet quarter, known for its quaint wooden warehouses and browse high-quality museums for decorative arts and antique musical instruments.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Trondheim:

1 Kristiansten Fortress
On a hill above the right bank of the Nidelven River, Kristiansten Fortress was the main component of Trondheim’s new layout after the great city fire of April 1681.

2 Nidaros Cathedral

It’s hard to sum up the importance of the world’s northernmost Medieval cathedral.Norway’s National Sanctuary is a Romanesque and Gothic church built from 1070 to 1300 on the burial place of Olav II of Norway, who lost his life at the Battle of Nilestad in 1030. A year after he died he was canonised as Saint Olav, the patron saint of Norway, and from that point on his grave became a venerated pilgrimage site for people from all over Northern Europe.Norway’s kings were traditionally crowned at Nidaros Cathedral, while for sightseers the most famous image is the western facade, full of sculptures of saints and kings flanking a sublime rose window. These tend to be newer than they look, dating from a 19th-century restoration and still being carved up to the 1980s.
The crypt under the nave has tomb monuments going back to the Middle Ages.

3 Bakklandet
You can thank Trondheim’s 20th-century residents that this cute quarter on the east side of the Nidelva River is still here.
A new main road was due to be laid through Bakklandet in the 1960s, but long-term residents, students and architects all protested and the plans were shelved.Between the Bakke Bridge and Old Town Bridge, Bakklandet is a small neighbourhood of painted wooden warehouses, which blossomed as Trondheim’s first suburb in the mid-17th century.
The buildings were both a place of work and living space for merchants and artisans, and on the river some of the wharfside buildings stand on wooden piles. On Bakklandet’s cobblestone streets are galleries, design shops, cafes and restaurants with old-time wooden storefronts and ample outdoor seating on warmer days.

4 Old Town Bridge
As vantage points go, you can’t do much better than the pedestrian and cycle bridge crossing the Nidelva River at Bakklandet.

5 Tyholttårnet, Egon Restaurant Thondheim

Highest of all is the lookout from this radio tower erected in the southeast of the city in 1985. The Tyholttårnet is 124 metres tall, making it the tallest building in all of Norway.

At 74 metres there’s a revolving restaurant that makes one turn per hour, so you should get to see the whole of Trondheim and satisfying perspective of the fjord in one sitting.

Trondheim, Norway - City Tour & Drone, 4k

Trondheim is located at the mouth of the Nidelva River on the banks of the Trondheim Fjord and is the third largest city in Norway. By the way, Trondheim was the first capital of Norway from 1030 to 1217.

We started our walk from the old city bridge (Gamle bybro) by the way, they say that if you make a wish while standing between two gates, it will come true. The bridge was built in 1685 and was of strategic importance, connecting the Christiansten fortress with the city. Since then, the bridge has undergone many renovations. But the details of the mechanism of those times, when it was still lifting, with graceful red arches, are still preserved.

The bridge offers a wonderful view of the visiting card of Trondheim, the quarter of old port houses along the Nidelva River. Colored wood, creaking piles, and the cries of seagulls. There is a special atmosphere here and you want to carefully examine each fragment. And only after looking more closely do you understand that these fabulous houses are residential and there are apartments in them where the townspeople live. And on the streets behind them are cafes, shops, bars and restaurants, which serve as an excellent addition to the quarter.

The weather was gloomy and on the way to the Nidaros Cathedral (Nidarosdomen) it began to rain. But soon the sun came out again and we were able to see the most significant monument of Norwegian Gothic in all its glory. Wooden and frame churches are more popular in Norway, so looking at the cathedral in Trondheim you get the feeling that you are in England or France. A very unusual and majestic building with many interesting elements.

The church at the burial place of St. Olaf (1075) was replaced in the XII-XIV century by the existing Nidaros Cathedral. The cathedral has been reconstructed and renovated many times. Coronations of Norwegian monarchs traditionally take place in the cathedral.

Then we walked along the central square of the city, a nice and very bright street with umbrellas, and climbed the hill with the Kristiansten festning. From the hill, there is an excellent view of the city, the quarter of old houses, and the cathedral.

We also drove to the embankment and saw an interesting railway drawbridge (Skansen jernbanebru) we were lucky and a train was just walking along it!

And we completed our walk near the TV tower (Tyholttårnet). By the way, there is a chain restaurant Egon in the TV tower and you can have a bite to eat there with a view of the city, which we will definitely do next time!

Trondheim has a maritime climate with mild winters and cool summers. And the weather can change several times a day. Our walk began on a gloomy morning, a warm summer sun came out in the afternoon, and in the evening a strong wind rose, thunderclouds flew in and even a rainbow appeared!

In this video, we invite you to walk with us around the city of Trondheim. And we really hope that you will like it, feel free to ask your questions and write your wishes in the comments, we are always pleased to read them! ;)

About Us:
We are traveling across Norway with a caravan Hymer Eriba Troll 530 Rockabilly. Most of our trips are relatively short and start from Fredrikstad in Norway. For those who are limited in time, you might discover what you could see during a two-day or three-day trip in Southern Norway.

You are welcome to leave your questions in a comment on the video and we will try to answer our best!
