St. Pölten, Altstadt - Austria HD Travel Channel
St. Pölten is the provincial capital of Lower Austria since 1997. It emerged from the Roman City Aelium Cetium. Remains are to be seen at City Hall. The architect Jacob Prandtauer lived in St. Pölten for a long time and gave the city its baroque character. With the foundation of the Benedictine monastery of St. Hippolytus by representatives of the Tegernsee Abbey, the city gained in importance. St. Hippolytus gave St. Pölten his name. The cathedral square was once the center of the Roman settlement.
The Institute of the English ladies was also designed by Jacob Prandtauer. Notable personalities have visited the school, e.g. the poetess and writer Enrica Handel-Mazzetti.
One of the tourist attraction is the Herrenplatz in the center of the city, surrounded by numerous Baroque buildings. Around the Marian column, flowers and seasonal fruits are offered daily. On Tuesday is the City Market where one can buy cheese, meat and bread. The surrounding cafes invite to stay for a while.
Worth seeing is the Mayor's office with its the magnificent baroque stuccoed ceiling from 1722. It is among the most beautiful ceilings in Austria and shows the Emperors of Holy Roman Empire, from Frederick III to Charles VI. The Mayor's office serves as representational room and as venue for small concerts.

St. Pölten ist seit 1986 die Landeshauptstadt Niederösterreichs. Sie ging aus der Römerstadt Aelium Cetium hervor. Reste davon sind im Rathaus zu sehen. Jakob Prandtauer lebte lange Zeit in St. Pölten und gab der Stadt ihr barockes Gepräge.
An Bedeutung gewann die Stadt mit der Gründung des Benediktinerklosters St. Hippolyt, durch Beauftragte des Klosters Tegernsee. Der hl. Hippolytos gab St. Pölten seinen Namen. Der Domplatz war einst das Zentrum der römischen Siedlung.
Das Institut der Englischen Fräulein wurde ebenfalls von Jakob Prandtauer gestaltet. Bedeutende Persönlichkeiten haben diese Schule besucht, z.B. die Dichterin und Schriftstellerin Enrica Handel-Mazzetti.
Der Herrenplatz wird von zahlreichen barocken Häusern umsäumt. Rund um die Mariensäule werden Blumen und je nach Jahreszeit Obst verkauft. Dienstags wird auf dem Herrenplatz beim Citymarkt auch Käse, Fleisch und Brot verkauft. Die umliegenden Cafés laden zum Verweilen ein.
Das Wahrzeichen von St. Pölten ist das Rathaus. Sehenswert ist das Amtszimmer des Bürgermeisters mit der prachtvollen barocken Kaiser-Stuckdecke aus dem Jahre 1722. Sie zählt zu den schönsten Österreichs und zeigt u. a. die römisch-deutschen Kaiser von Friedrich III. bis Karl VI. Das Bürgermeisterzimmer ist auch Repräsentationszimmer und Veranstaltungsort für kleinere Konzerte.

Hofkirche, Innsbruck - Austria HD Travel Channel
The Hofkirche -Court Church -- with the tomb of Maximilian I is in the center of Innsbruck, right on the outskirts of the old town.
Emperor Maximilian I. planned his own monuments already in his lifetime. His monument in the court church Innsbruck is one of the most important cultural monuments in Europe. When he died in the town of Wels it was his wish to be buried in Wels. 28 larger than life statues are symbolizing his family, the Christianity and the claim to power on other European royal houses are grouped around the cenotaph in Innsbruck.
The monument was planned in competition to pope Julius II. The pope appointed Michelangelo to create a similar building, but at the end Michelangelo had to create the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel. During the completion time of the building in Innsbruck by the grandson of Maximilian, Emperor Ferdinand I and his son archduke Ferdinand II of Tyrol, 20 popes each with ideas of his own, reigned in Rome and at the end only the figure of the Moses was completed.
Andreas Hofer, a Tyrolean patriot, found his last resting-place in the Hofkirche.
Ferdinand II and his bourgeois wife Philippine Welser are buried in Silver Chapel, a side chapel of the Hofkirche.

Die Hofkirche Innsbruck mit dem Grabmal Maximilians I. befindet sich Zentrum von Innsbruck direkt am Rande der Altstadt.
Schon zu Lebzeiten plante Kaiser Maximilian I. seine eigenen Denkmäler. Eines der bedeutendsten europäischen Kulturdenkmäler ist sein Grabmal in der Hofkirche Innsbruck. Aber begraben ist er in Wiener Neustadt, wie er es bei seinem Tod in Wels bestimmt hatte. Um den Kenotaph in Innsbruck sind 28 überlebensgroße Figuren gruppiert, die symbolhaft für seine Familie, das Christentum und den Anspruch auf andere europäische Fürstenhäuser stehen.
Geplant wurde das Grabmal in Konkurrenz zu Papst Julius II., der ein ähnliches Bauwerk bei Michelangelo in Auftrag gegeben hatte, diesen später aber die Fresken der Sixtinischen Kapelle gestalten ließ. Während in Innsbruck der Enkel von Maximilian, Kaiser Ferdinand I. und dessen Sohn Erzherzog Ferdinand II. von Tirol das Bauwerk vollendeten, hatten in Rom 20 Päpste geherrscht, jeder mit eigenen Vorstellungen, so dass letztlich nur die Gestalt des Moses fertig gestellt wurde.
In der Hofkirche hat auch Andreas Hofer seine letzte Ruhestätte gefunden.
Ferdinand II. ist mit seiner bürgerlichen Frau Philippine Welser in der angebauten Silbernen Kapelle bestattet.

Graz, Kunsthaus und Murinsel - Austria HD Travel Channel
The art house created on the occasion of the European Capital of Culture in 2003 in Graz (Styria, Austria) was integrated with the façade of the iron house, built in1847, and forms a strong contrast with the surrounding buildings. At night the modern glass façade can be used as a display to let the exhibited art sink in the public space.
The Murinsel, the modern landmark of the city of Graz, is between art house and Schlossberg in the Mur River. The floating steel construction in form of a sea shell was designed by New York artist and designer Vito Acconci after an idea of Robert Punkenhofer from Graz. The Murnsel is bridge, cafe and children's play area as well as meeting point of the youth in the amphitheater on sunny days.

Das anlässlich des Kulturhaupstadtjahres 2003 in Graz (Steiermark, Österreich) geschaffene Kunsthaus wurde mit der Fassade des Eisernen Hauses von 1847 integriert und bildet einen starken Kontrast mit den umliegenden Gebäuden. Nachts lässt sich die moderne Glasfassade als Display benutzen, um die ausgestellte Kunst in den öffentlichen Raum wirken zu lassen.
Die Murinsel, eine schwimmende Stahlkonstruktion in Muschelform, liegt zwischen Kunsthaus und Schloßberg in der Mur und ist das moderne Wahrzeichen der Stadt Graz. Sie wurde vom New Yorker Künstler und Designer Vito Acconci nach einer Idee des Grazers Robert Punkenhofer geschaffen. Die Murinsel ist nicht nur Brücke, Café und Kinderspielplatz, sondern an sonnigen Tagen auch Treffpunkt der Jugend im Amphitheater.

Am siebten Tag meiner Radtour entlang der Flüsse durch Österreich verlasse ich die Donau und fahre hinauf zum Stift Göttweig. Von dort geht es auf der Fladnitztal-Route nach Sankt Pölten und auf dem Traisental-Radweg weiter nach Süden bis Traisen.
Roman Quarry, St. Margarethen, Burgenland - Austria HD Travel Channel
The Roman Quarry near St. Margarethen at Lake Neusiedl has a history of 2000 years. It was used by the Romans to build Carnuntum. Later, it delivered the stones for the construction of St. Stephen's Cathedral and many buildings of the Ring Road in Vienna. It is one of the oldest quarries in Europe and since 2001 it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape Fertö / Lake Neusiedl.
Contemporary artists created sculptures along the walks. Karl Prantl in 1959 was the first organizer of the European Sculptor Symposium .
In summer, the festival arena is scene of the elaborately staged Opera Festival St. Margarethen. The open-air opera festival has reached Austria-wide importance. What is better than to experience Nabucco, one of the many open-air performances offered here, amidst a rocky landscape.
In addition, amateur actors present the Passion Plays of St. Margarethen here every 5 years. The proceeds are used for charitable purposes.

Der Römersteinbruch St. Margarethen am Neusiedler See blickt auf eine 2000 Jahre alte Geschichte zurück. Er wurde von den Römern zum Bau von Carnuntum genutzt. Später lieferte er die Steine für den Bau des Stephansdoms und vieler Ringstraßengebäude. Er gehört zu den ältesten Steinbrüchen Europas und ist seit 2001 Teil des UNESCO-Weltkulturerbes Kulturlandschaft Fertö / Neusiedler See.
Zeitgenössische Künstler schufen Skulpturen entlang der Wanderwege. Karl Prantl war 1959 der erste Veranstalter des Symposiums europäischer Bildhauer.
Im Sommer ist die Festspielbühne Schauplatz der aufwendig inszenierten Opernfestspiele St. Margarethen. Das Open-Air-Opern-Festival hat heute österreichweite Bedeutung. Was gibt es schöneres als Nabucco, eine der zahlreichen Freilichtaufführungen die hier geboten werden, inmitten einer Felslandschaft zu erleben.
Außerdem veranstalten Laiendarsteller hier alle 5 Jahre die Passionsspiele St. Margarethen. Der Erlös ist für karitative Zwecke bestimmt.

Travel Austria: Hiking in Eastern Styria
So far I had really been lucky with the weather in Austria. After weeks of rain my first few days here had been perfect, and June 6, 2010 greeted me as another sunny and warm day. We started the morning with a nice walk in the village of Oberdorf, a small hamlet in Eastern Styria. Next to the Raab River we walked past strawberry fields and vegetable fields to the village of Mitterdorf where we crossed the river and started our walk back. Back in Oberdorf we sent my brother's dog chasing sticks in the river, which made him very happy. If a dog could smile, he would definitely have been grinning from ear to ear.
Lunch was served, and my brother, a consummate professional chef, served up another Austrian delicacy: crispy Austrian fried chicken, locally referred to as Backhendl. At noon time we picked up my sister-in-law's sister and two pairs of siblings went for a hike in Eastern Styria. We parked the car in the village of St. Johann bei Herberstein and started walking up the scenic hills that are clad in vineyards and orchards.
We visited a location called the Holy Sepulchre, two historic chapels from the 1700s that were built by a local aristocratic family. Past various farms we continued our hike to the Geierwand (the vulture wall), a mountain top with an almost vertical drop down to the River Feistritz. Lake Stubenberg, a man-made lake, surrounded by rolling hills, comes perfectly into view from this location.
After our arrival down from the mountain we walked around the lake and sat down in one of the beach cafes to enjoy some ice cream which strengthened us for the scenic uphill walk to the village of St. Johann which has a parish church that dates from the mid 17th century. A collection of Roman gravestones is built into the church's exterior wall.
After returning from our walk and resting a little we spent the evening celebrating with various friends and family.

tocht was vanaf Tuln niet erg interesant.
Austrian Wine Country
This is a time-lapse journey through Austria's Wachau Valley region between Melk and Krems, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Wachau attracts wine connoisseurs and is also known for epicurean adventures. The Viking cruise ship Idun passed through this region on one of its frequent trips on the Danube River.
