The ULTIMATE SICILY ROAD TRIP - Taormina, Ortigia, Agrigento, Erice & MORE (Italy’s Hidden Gems)

Welcome to Sicily, Italy's southern island nestled in the heart of the Mediterranean. While Italy attracts millions of tourists each year, many tend to focus on its more iconic cities and regions. Sicily is by no means a hidden gem, but it certainly provides a more authentic and less crowded Italian experience. With its alluring mix of ancient ruins, charming coastal towns, and delicious cuisine, this is the Italy we've been looking for. We are so lucky that Tommy’s parents are joining us on this unforgettable roadtrip as we go beyond the usual tourist hotspots and immerse ourselves in the Sicilian culture.

Our first destination was the enchanting town of Taormina. In this picturesque, cliffside town, there was so much to do. We visited Isola Bella, a stunning island just off the coast, indulged in incredible dishes like the iconic Bam Bar granitas and pistachio pasta, and delved into the rich history at the ancient amphitheater.

We then headed to Ortigia, a charming island brimming with character and history. Strolling through the streets, we discovered the vibrant outdoor market, where local vendors displayed an array of fresh produce, artisanal crafts, spices, and FRESH seafood. The market's lively atmosphere was sensory overload, and we couldn't resist sampling some of the incredible seafood. The culinary scene in Ortigia, especially its exceptional seafood, makes it an unmissable highlight on any Sicily road trip.

Agrigento's Valley of the Temples stands as an essential stop on a Sicily journey. This ancient archaeological site has well-preserved Greek ruins that transport visitors back in time. We went at sunset for ideal lighting and a great atmosphere.

Erice, a hilltop town in Sicily, is a must-visit destination. With its cobblestone streets and medieval architecture, the town offers a charming and historic atmosphere. We tried the local cookies, which were so yummy. The town's unique blend of history and culinary delights makes it a memorable stop on any Sicilian itinerary.

We spent a couple nights in Castellammare del Golfo, a charming town on the northwest coast of Sicily.

We ended our road trip spending few days by the sea near Messina, providing a perfect place to reflect on our incredible Sicilian adventure.

Buongiorno guys, I'm Max Ginestra.

I've always had a dream to travel for food around the world.

I believe that through food we can deeply explore new cultures, traditions and get to know the people.

In this channel, Abroad and Hungry, I will share my passion for street food, local and traditional cuisine.

Sicily | Palermo | Episode 10

Palermo is a must see place when visiting Sicily! We tell where we safely park and charge our Tesla and everything about the magnificent and incredibly lively, city of Palermo. With it's enjoyable lifestyle, where it's all about food and enjoyment.

Palermo really is an incredibly exciting city. The people are super nice and there is something to discover everywhere. This cultural wealth and the crumbling facades, everything is colorful and cheerful and the food is just delicious.
This combination is incredibly captivating. And we would say the best way to visit Palermo is curios and hungry.

We stroll along the pedestrian street Vittorio Emanuele, everywhere there are colorful delicacies to be discovered!
This nearly 500-year-old fountain is also known as the Fountain of Shame. The fountain was probably too permissive for many Palermitans back in time.
Life takes place outside and there is something to see everywhere. Palermo offers an incredibly exciting mix of everyday life and cultural treasures.

Our main destination in Palermo is Ballaro market and here we want to taste Palermo street food. Wow, everything is so colorful and vibrant and the vibe here is incredibly rousing.
Here you can find everything, fish, fruit and vegetables, clothes and an almost endless choice of street food.
We have tuna steaks grilled and try fish croquettes with raisins and sardines roulades. Simply delicious!

Real life, here you can feel it completely. It's not all perfect, sometimes messy and dirty.
We walk to a neighborhood a little bit away from the center. The laundry is drying in the streets.
The facades are crumbling and rubbish is everywhere.
And all sorts of things are sold on the street. It's probably not the best neighborhood, but we don't find it dangerous at all.
This unaffected and imperfect inspires us totally. Palermo is such a diverse city.

And now our path leads us back to the center. What a contrast. Palermo Cathedral and the square in front of it are just beautiful.

The famous baroque square Quattro Canti in the old center of Palermo is particularly beautiful.
A magnificent palazzo was built in each of the four corners.
What opulent architecture! And each of the four corners has a patron saint and a fountain.

We're about to head back when we spot this old lady up on the balcony and her basket in front of an ice cream shop.
No one seems to be interested in the basket. We got curious and wanted to see what's inside.
A shopping list and 10 euros. The lady upstairs would like to order ice cream. So I line up.
Of course, in the ice cream shop, the lady from above in known and her order of ice cream is prepared.
The basket technique is very common in Sicily. Whether at the traveling fishmonger or like here for ice cream.
You simply trust people to put the goods and the change in the basket. Just great.
And the old lady from upstairs is happy about her ice cream delivery without having to walk down the stairs.

And we didn't find Palermo to be a dangerous city at all.
We could have also driven into town with our Tesla. And it's a pity that the Tesla Supercharger wasn't ready when we visited Palermo....

Renting and Driving a car in Sicily

All you need to know about renting and driving a car in Sicily, with information about the needed driving license, speed limits, parking, where to rent for the best deal, petty crime, traffic and a comparison with public transportation.

My suggested website to rent a car:
It's a comparative website (similar to Airbnb) providing the best deals around, you will not be disappointed!

IMPORTANT! Remember to fully insure your car to have a smooth experience
Full Guide about RENTING a car in SICILY:

In the video I mentioned that Brits need an IDP, but it's not correct. You can drive if you have a valid UK driving licence. I asked a few renters and I had mixed answers, however, checking the government websites (May 23) there is no problem. My suggestion is to bring a copy of the present rules to the Rental Agencies.

Dear Sicily Lover,

in this episode we took another walk in the area of Trabia (province of Palermo), in the north coastline of Sicily!

This time you will be amazed by San Nicola l'Arena , one of the most beautiful fishing villages in Sicily. We took the opportunity to visit the castle by the sea, one of the best places to visit in Sicily.

WHAT ABOUT THIS VIDEO AND THE SICILY LOVERS' FAMILY:
This video comes from a live streaming on our Facebook page named Best Things to Do in Sicily, a community with more than 17,000 friends who follow us from US, Canada, Australia and other countries around the world.

WHAT ABOUT US AND THE SICILY LOVERS PROJECT:
We are Rosella and Gianca, two native proud Sicilians with a strong passion for our beloved island.
We own a dynamic tour company which helps people enjoy amazing experiences in Sicily from the vantage point of true Sicilians!

When the Covid-19 pandemic hit in 2020, it crippled the economy and paralyzed our tourism activities.
We were all faced with something foreign and unexpected.
But we were determined not to let anything stop us from sharing our cherished island with other proud Sicily Lovers.

We needed to re-invent ourselves bringing fresh new ideas and solutions so that people may continue to enjoy the best that Sicily has to offer.

These difficult times have deprived us from many things but have given us so much more: this new project dedicated to our beautiful family of Sicily Lovers around the world.

And so, if you love Sicily you have 2 possibilities:

Places to see in ( Palermo - Italy )

Palermo is the capital of the Italian island of Sicily. The 12th-century Palermo Cathedral houses royal tombs, while the huge neoclassical Teatro Massimo is known for opera performances. Also in the center are the Palazzo dei Normanni, a royal palace started in the 9th century, and the Cappella Palatina, with Byzantine mosaics. Busy markets include the central Ballarò street market and the Vucciria, near the port.

Palermo is a city of Southern Italy, the capital of both the autonomous region of Sicily and the Metropolitan City of Palermo. The city is noted for its history, culture, architecture and gastronomy, playing an important role throughout much of its existence; it is over 2,700 years old. Palermo is located in the northwest of the island of Sicily, right by the Gulf of Palermo in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Palermo lies in a basin, formed by the Papireto, Kemonia and Oreto rivers. The basin was named the Conca d'Oro (the Golden Basin) by the Arabs in the 9th century. The city is surrounded by a mountain range which is named after the city itself. These mountains face the Tyrrhenian Sea. Palermo is home to a natural port and offers excellent views to the sea, especially from Monte Pellegrino.

Palermo currently has an international airport, and a significant underground economy. In fact, for cultural, artistic and economic reasons, Palermo was one of the largest cities in the Mediterranean and is now among the top tourist destinations in both Italy and Europe. It is the main seat of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalù and Monreale. The city is also going through careful redevelopment, preparing to become one of the major cities of the Euro-Mediterranean area. Roman Catholicism is highly important in Palermitano culture. The Patron Saint of Palermo is Santa Rosalia whose Feast Day is celebrated on 15 July. The area attracts significant numbers of tourists each year and is widely known for its colourful fruit, vegetable and fish markets at the heart of Palermo, known as Vucciria, Ballarò and Capo. UNESCO World Heritage Sites include the Palazzo Reale with the Cappella Palatina, the Chiesa di San Giovanni degli Eremiti, the Chiesa di Santa Maria dell’Ammiraglio, the Chiesa di San Cataldo, the Cattedrale di Palermo, the Palazzo della Zisa and the Ponte dell’Ammiraglio. This makes Italy the country with the most UNESCO world heritage sites, and Sicily the region hosting the most within Italy.
