Roma, Platani secolari a Villa Borghese (manortiz)
«...verso Ponente comincia il sito al Portone, à calare, finché à poco à poco una lunga Valle... è questa Valle piantata tutta di gran quantità d'alberi, la maggior parte Querce: e nel fondo ha un piccolo Lago, lungo 715 e largo 120 palmi, coronato da quaranta amenissimi Platani; e con due isolette in mezzo, con due Platani grandi per una, grato albergo à gli Uccelli d'acqua, che qui soggiornano...».
Era il 1650, quando Jacopo Manilli nel suo Villa Borghese fuori Porta Pinciana descritta da Jacopo Manilli guardarobba di detta Villa raccontava quello che ogni giorno vedeva intorno a sé nel giardino della Villa del suo signore, il principe don Gio Battista Borghese.
Oggi, di quei platani ne restano nove, che sin dagli inizi del Seicento vivono in tutta la loro maestosità nell'omonima Valle, uno dei patrimoni storici e naturalistici più importanti d'Europa, tra gli ultimi esempi di paesaggio rurale seicentesco e pre-romano.
Questi nove alberi sono le piante più antiche di Roma, esemplari rarissimi (gli unici nella Capitale ad essere certificati come platanus orientalis), arrivati dai Paesi orientali del Mediterraneo e piantati agli inizi del XVII secolo da Domenico Savini da Montepulciano, il capo giardiniere del cardinale Scipione Caffarelli Borghese. Il loro valore biologico e storico è eccezionale; essi, come appena detto, appartengono ancora al primo impianto del XVII secolo, senza contare che il Platanus orientalis è una specie originaria, oggi rara, dei Paesi del Mediterraneo orientale e della Sicilia.
Con la loro piantumazione il cardinale Scipione Borghese iniziò a dare corpo al progetto di costruire una villa delle delizie con il più vasto giardino mai realizzato a Roma dall'antichità, perché diventasse il simbolo dello status sociale della sua famiglia.
I Borghese, infatti, originari di Siena, possedevano sino ad allora solo un modesto appezzamento di terreno coltivato a vigne fin dal 1580. Fu dopo l'elezione di Camillo Borghese al soglio pontificio con il nome di Paolo V (1605-1621) che la nobile famiglia volle realizzare una sontuosa residenza suburbana, decisione del resto in linea con le tendenze di quel tempo a Roma. La città, infatti, stava vivendo, già a partire dal Cinquecento, la rinascita del suo potere e del suo splendore e il segno tangibile di questo felice periodo fu la profonda trasformazione urbana del suo tessuto. In particolare furono proprio i nobili romani, quale segno evidente del loro potere, a commissionare delle ville di delizia sui colli vicino alla città, dove gli artisti dell'epoca si sbizzarrirono nelle realizzazioni di ville e giardini secondo i canoni più arditi e più alla moda. E fu a queste residenze suburbane, cornici ideali per la realizzazione di straordinarie opere d'arte, che le famiglie affidarono l'affermazione del loro status nobiliare e Villa Borghese rappresenta uno degli interessi più significativi della tipologia di villa suburbana. Tutto cominciò, appunto, con il cardinale Scipione, nipote prediletto del Papa Paolo V e futuro patrono di Gianlorenzo Bernini, che -- dopo aver acquisito i terreni circostanti alla proprietà esistente -- affidò la realizzazione della Villa agli architetti Flaminio Ponzio e Giovanni Vasanzio (cui successe nel 1621 Girolamo Rainaldi), affiancati, per occuparsi dei giardini, da Domenico Savini da Montepulciano che si preoccupò di dividere l'immenso parco in pars urbana e pars rustica, unendo la presenza di giardini raffinati a vaste aree di campagna.

Partiti da Ponticelli attraverseremo Acquaviva e Montelibretti prima di raggiungere la riserva naturale della Gattaceca e infine, su asfalto, Monterotondo.
Il percorso si snoderà sui colli laziali e in mezzo agli uliveti, per portarci infine verso la pianura.

Starting from Ponticelli we will cross Acquaviva and Montelibretti before reaching the Gattaceca nature reserve and finally, on asphalt, Monterotondo.
