The northern stretch of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal opened to navigation on Saturday, giving visitors a chance to enjoy views of Beijing and Xianghe County in Hebei Province, along the canal.
At 09: 00, two cruise ships sailed out of Gantang Gate in Tongzhou District, Beijing's sub-center, marking the full navigation of the 40.1-kilometer Beijing section of the Grand Canal, the world's longest man-made waterway.
The 11.4-kilometer Tongzhou section of the Grand Canal runs through several landmarks along the canal including the business district, administrative office area and a forest park.
In recent years, Tongzhou has been committed to water resource management for the 28.7-kilometer downstream of the canal's Beijing section by taking measures including widening the channel, building new navigation locks and docks, which has made the downstream be navigable and release flood waters.
On Oct 3, 2019, the canal's Tongzhou section became officially navigable.
The 40.1-kilometer Beijing section has a maximum capacity for eight pleasure ships two-way sailing that can handle 2.5 million passengers annually.
To make the navigation boost local tourism, Xianghe County has built five docks and purchased six tourist boats on both sides of the canal, which can carry 3,500 passengers a day. The canal's Xianghe section will become an important tourist attraction in the region.
Built in the Jin Dynasty (1115-1234), the northern section of the Grand Canal was an important channel for grain transportation during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
Since the water transportation was suspended in 1901, the river has been gradually abandoned.
Of the 143-kilometer northern section , 21.7 kilometers flows through Hebei Province, all in Xianghe County.
In addition to the dredging and widening for the channel's main rivers as well as enhancing bank slope protection projects, the navigation projects have also greatly improved the ecological environment on both sides of the canal.
The Grand Canal, with a length of 1,794 kilometers and a history of more than 2,400 years, was once a major waterway linking Beijing and resource-rich Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang Province.
