Steam to the Gobi Desert - English • Great Railways

China’s railways were the world's last great bastion of steam. New routes in a rapidly expanding network had priority for modern traction, leaving existing lines to continue with steam traction for decades. This programme takes us on a 1991 rail journey from the sole surviving standard gauge steam locomotive factory, past the Great Wall of China and through the wilds of inner Mongolia to the edge of the Gobi desert. The famous QJ 2-10-2 is filmed on express passenger work in stunning mountain scenery with a dramatic cab ride, as well as double-heading heavy freights on the horseshoe curves beyond Zhongwei en route to China’s Far West.
Other classic types featured are YJ 2-6-2 at Baotou steel works, plus JF 2-8-2 and SY 2-8-2 on branch line and coal mine service. A rare archive clip shows an ex-USSR FD Class 2-10-2 filmed inside the great Yangtze bridge. In all, a fascinating portrait of a vanished era.

A tour of small towns in northern China -- DASHITOU Town, Dunhua City, Jilin Province

Inner Mongolia Trip: Part 1

In 2019 June we visited Inner Mongolia, autonomous region of China. From the capital Beijing it took 10 hours by bus (depends on traffic). Its roughly 500 km from Beijing to Hohhot City, Capital of Inner Mongolia autonomous region. This video is mostly about horse riding and the experience we had there in the grasslands. Grasslands is a bit far from the capital hohhot and it is a very rural area where there is no proper roads, facilities and services like hospitals and schools. The local people we met there was mostly nomads. And the resort we stayed for one night were the people who was doing business in that area.
Part 2 will be coming soon...

Here are 10 of the strangest facts about China!

10 - Counterfeit everything
Nobody can do imitation like China. Knockoff smartphones, designer clothing, and luxury handbags are only part of the counterfeit business. In recent years, mainland China's copycat profiteers moved into the business of counterfeiting ENTIRE shops and brand identities! In 2011, a fake Apple store popped up in the southwestern city of Kunming. It looked so authentic, some employees even thought it was real! In 2015, the police shut down a fake bank in the eastern city of Nanjing, where depositors reportedly lost nearly $33 million dollars. The fake bank looked exactly like a real one complete with security guards, computers, ATMs. In 2014, Hong Kong restaurateur Yenn Wong got a surprise one morning. The co-founder of popular Hong Kong restaurant Chachawan Isaan Thai and Bar woke up and found a second Chachawan restaurant in Shanghai that completely copied her restaurant! Chachawan's Facebook page was filled with enthusiastic inquiries asking if the shop had opened a new branch in Shanghai. The Shanghai Chachawan had the same exterior look and feel as the Hong Kong shop, and even the menu, focusing on northeastern Thai, or Isaan cuisine, looked the exact same. As it turned out, the owners of the fake Chachawan expressed interest in taking the concept to the mainland but their idea was refused. But that didn’t discourage them in the slightest!

9 - Panda Panda Panda Panda
Panda diplomacy is China's use of giant pandas as diplomatic gifts to other countries. The practice existed as far back as the Tang Dynasty when Empress Wu Zetian sent a pair of pandas to the Japanese emperor. BUT the panda diplomacy comes with a twist.
Actually, China is the owner of all the pandas in the world – even if they give it away as a gift! Well, almost. But I’ll get to that in a minute. In fact, if you happen to see a panda outside the country, that’s because it’s on loan! China even owns all future offspring of all pandas! Over the past 15 years, every time China has sent a panda to a foreign zoo, they’ve required an agreement with the receiving country. According to the contract, the pandas belong to China and so do any of their offspring. If there are any offspring, they must be returned to China before they turn four years old. The contract also expressly forbids panda cloning research! However, there are two pandas which are owned by Mexico; Xin Xin and Shuan Shuan. This was before China implemented the “I own all the pandas” policy. But, Mexico has agreed that if these pandas have any offspring, they will belong to China. You know what. I’m adopting this policy for all the gifts I give!!!!

8 - Cave dwellers
Did you know, there are currently 30 million people in China who live in caves?! That’s the equivalent to the entire populations of Australia and New Zealand combined! The craziest part? Most of those 30 million people LOVE their living arrangements – the majority of these caves are bigger, nicer, and quieter than a lot of Beijing’s apartments!
The majority of China’s cave dwellers live in Shaanxi province, where the porous soil and limestone cliffs make for easy excavation. Most have electricity, many have plumbing, and some come with multiple rooms and a lawn too! More importantly, in a country where people still earn low wages, you can rent a big cave for about $30 a month or in some cases, you can just make your own and live completely for free. The earth that surrounds the indoor space serves as an effective insulator keeping the inside of the structure warm in cold seasons and cool in hot seasons. Very little heating is required during the winter, and during the summer, these caves are supposedly as cool as an air-conditioned room. In the last decade, these cave dwellings have been brought to the attention of scientists and researchers and have been regarded as an example of sustainable design. Hey, I can’t say it’s a bad thing.

Driving China's Northeast 4K - Snow Drive - Heilongjiang

[4K RoadTour] Chinese Lunar New Year's Eve, in winter in Northeast China, the wind is biting, and the temperature drops to -35℃/-31℉ at sunset. This place belongs to Hulin City, Heilongjiang Province, it is the easternmost town in China, separated from Russia by the Ussuri River. This is where the Sino-Soviet border conflict broke out in 1969 too. The Chinese army gathered here, and Zhenbao Island in the distant Ussuri River was the main battlefield. It was the closest military conflict to nuclear war during the Cold War.

Heilongjiang (/ˌheɪlɒŋˈdʒæŋ/) formerly romanized as Heilungkiang, is a province in northeast China. The standard one-character abbreviation for the province is 黑 (pinyin: Hēi). It is the northernmost and easternmost province of the country and contains China's northernmost point (in Mohe City along the Amur) and easternmost point (at the junction of the Amur and Ussuri rivers).
The province is bordered by Jilin to the south and Inner Mongolia to the west. It also shares a border with Russia (Amur Oblast, Jewish Autonomous Oblast, Khabarovsk Krai, Primorsky Krai and Zabaykalsky Krai) to the north and east. The capital and the largest city of the province is Harbin. Among Chinese provincial-level administrative divisions, Heilongjiang is the sixth-largest by total area, the 15th-most populous, and the second-poorest by GDP per capita.
The province takes its name from the Amur River (see the etymology section below for details) which marks the border between the People's Republic of China and Russia.
Northeast China or Northeastern China (simplified Chinese: 东北; traditional Chinese: 東北; pinyin: Dōngběi) is a geographical region of China, which is often referred to as Manchuria or Inner Manchuria by surrounding countries and the West. It usually corresponds specifically to the three provinces east of the Greater Khingan Range, namely Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang, but historically is meant to also encompass the four easternmost prefectures of Inner Mongolia west of the Greater Khingan. The heartland of the region is the Northeast China Plain, the largest plain in China, with an area over 350,000 km2 (140,000 sq mi). It is separated from Russian Far East to the north by the Amur, Argun, and Ussuri rivers; from Korea to the south by the Yalu and Tumen Rivers; and from Inner Mongolia to the west by the Greater Khingan and parts of the Xiliao River.

Due to the shrinking of its once-powerful industrial sector and decline of its economic growth and population, the region is often referred to as China's Rust Belt. As a result, a campaign named Northeast Area Revitalization Plan was launched in the 2000s by the State Council of the People's Republic of China, in which five prefectures of eastern Inner Mongolia, namely Hulunbuir, Hinggan, Tongliao, Chifeng and Xilin Gol, are also formally defined as regions of the Northeast.
