Kyrgyzstan (/ˌkɜːrɡɪˈstɑːn/ KUR-gih-STAHN;[8] Kyrgyz: Кыргызстан Kırğızstan Kyrgyz pronunciation: [qɯrʁɯsˈstɑn]), officially the Kyrgyz Republic (Kyrgyz: Кыргыз Республикасы, romanized: Kırğız Respublikası; Russian: Кыргызская Республика, tr. Kyrgyzskaya Respublika), and also known as Kirghizia (Russian: Киргизия [kʲɪrˈɡʲizʲɪjə]),[9] is a country in Central Asia.[10] Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked country with mountainous terrain. It is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west and southwest, Tajikistan to the southwest and China to the east. Its capital and largest city is Bishkek.

Kyrgyzstan's recorded history spans over 2,000 years, encompassing a variety of cultures and empires. Although geographically isolated by its highly mountainous terrain, which has helped preserve its ancient culture, Kyrgyzstan has been at the crossroads of several great civilizations as part of the Silk Road and other commercial and cultural routes. Though long inhabited by a succession of independent tribes and clans, Kyrgyzstan has periodically fallen under foreign domination and attained sovereignty as a nation-state only after the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Since independence, the sovereign state has officially been a unitary parliamentary republic, although it continues to endure ethnic conflicts,[11][12] revolts,[13] economic troubles,[14][15] transitional governments[16] and political conflict.[17] Kyrgyzstan is a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Eurasian Economic Union, the Collective Security Treaty Organization, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the Turkic Council, the Türksoy community and the United Nations.

Ethnic Kyrgyz make up the majority of the country's six million people, followed by significant minorities of Uzbeks and Russians. Kyrgyz is closely related to other Turkic languages, although Russian remains widely spoken and is an official language, a legacy of a century of Russification. The majority of the population are non-denominational Muslims.[18] In addition to its Turkic origins, Kyrgyz culture bears elements of Persian, Mongolian, and Russian influence.

Cholpon Ata— a resort area on the northern shore of Issyk Kul lake
Balykchy — the western gateway to Lake Issyk Kul.

Karakol — a gem at the remote east end of Issyk Kul.
Kochkor — just south of Balykchy, serves as a launch pad for treks up into the Tian Shan Mountains.
Naryn — right up in the Tian Shan, near Lake Song Kul, the gateway to the entire southeastern region, its ruins, mountains, and high alpine lakes.
Osh — Kyrgyzstan's second largest city, a fascinating, 3,000 years old, wildly diverse, Ferghana Valley market town home to Central Asia's biggest and busiest outdoor market.
Talas — a northwestern town just north of Besh-Tash National Park
Tokmok — dwarfed by nearby Bishkek, but still large by Kyrgyzstani standards, Tokmok is right by the ancient Burana Tower and the ruins of an ancient Silk Road capital, Ak-Beshim.
Toktogul — small city between the two bigs cities Bishkek and Osh. 280 km from Bishkek to south and 400km in the north from Osh. The city situated near big reservoir Toktogul.

Key destinations

Lake Issyk Kul — pearl of Central Asia, an enormous, crystal blue high alpine lake up in the Tian Shan Mountains. Do not forget about the Terskey mountains range. This is real paradise for the lovers of outdoor activity. The famous places of Issyk-Kul regions; the valley near the Karakol city. Cholpon Ata beach, and Fairtaly on the southern shore of the lake.

Lake Kul Ukuk
The caravanserai of Tash Rabat — a well-preserved 15th century stone caravanserai near Naryn.
Burana Tower — all that remains of the ancient Silk Road capital of Balasagun, a massive minaret standing alone on the step.
Ala Archa National Park — gorgeous Tian Shan high alpine landscapes within easy striking distance of Bishkek.
Toktogul area — There are a lot of lost lakes in the region of Toktogul. Kara suu mountains lake, Kapka mountain lake and Ak kol mountains lake.

ROADS OF KYRGYZSTAN | Cinematic Travel Video (4K)

We went on a 30 day roadtrip in Kyrgyzstan, a country with countless mountains and extremely varied landscapes. What better way to explore the country than in a 4x4 oldschool van? And of course I had to bring along my drone on the trip.

30 days was not nearly enough to cover all of Kyrgyz beautiful roads, but we ended up driving the following route:
Took off in Bishkek, the capital. We drove to the southern side of lake Issyk Kul, to Karakol. From there we visited Engilcheck, a remote abandoned city, after which we drove through the Arabel pass (wow!) toward Naryn. We visited the bright blue Köl-Suu lake and the Son-Köl lake. Next up were Dzjalal-Abad, Arslanbob and lake Sary-Chelek. Finally, we camped at Toktogul reservoir from where we made our way back to Bishkek.

Toktogul reservoir and spending the day with a local family | Central Asia Vlog

On my way to Osh, the second biggest city in Kyrgyzstan down south, I stop at Toktogul where I'll be spending the night. On the marshrutka (that I filmed in the previous video), an old Kyrgyz man kindly invited me to spend the day in his household in Toktogul with his family (his son and kids, his wife, etc.) His son drove us to Toktogul reservoir (or lake) where we had a nice dip and ate watermelon with the kids. It was very hot but not humid at all! We then went back home to have lunch. There was a meat stew with salad and freshly-fried traditional bread (Borsok). I ate everything except meat since I am plant-based. I spent the night at a hostel room that I have pre-booked a week before and left the next morning for Osh.

The video was taken somewhere around July 2022

Hiking & Hitchhiking in Kyrgyzstan - Toktogul to Burana Tower

Stayed in a hunter's home in Toktogul, as evident from the bear and fox pelts displayed inside the yurt. Decided to explore the Chychkan River of the Talas Region where my driver, Asam happened to own a bee farm and got invited to check it out.

Hiked to the lake called Saz Kol where locals set up vacation yurts surrounded by sky-piercing mountains ranges. A river nearby swerve through the trees, glittering on the surface.

On my way back was quite a 40-kilometer drive and it's getting dark. I planned to hitchhike, hoping that an old soviet truck would take me. (that's how I imagined it) Did not happen. Instead, the universe sent a Mercedes-Benz cargo truck with very kind people in it and I couldn't ask for more. We had dinner together halfway home, thankful to experience genuine kindness along the way.

Burana Tower:
Once a capital of the Karakhanid Empire in the 10th century is a medieval settlement of Balasagun. The most noticeable structure is the Burana Tower, a medieval minaret decorated with geometric patterns using fire bricks. This tower is considered as one of the oldest architectural constructions in Central Asia.

Followers of Islam and Buddhism lived in the ancient city of Balasagun, which is an important stop on the Silk Roads and a place of intercultural exchange. Around the site are petroglyphs and Bal-bals or gravestones, used by nomadic turkic tribes.

It's called silk road for a reason: silk was the most valuable commodity traded during these ancient times.

Completed 3,206 kilometers of travel in Kyrgyzstan over the course of 1 month.

❤️ IN THIS VIDEO:

In this vlog we continue our 2 days hitchhiking trip across KYRGYZSTAN to the capital of Bishkek. We were lucky to get one ride the whole 270 kilometres with a lovely local woman but boy was she a rally driver.

KYRGYZSTAN is one of the most BEAUTIFUL countries that we've visited and it felt incredibly nostalgic to once again drive through the to 3000 metre mountain passes between Toktogul and Bishkek and see the herders take their animals up to the higher pastures to graze. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL PLACE!

Outside of Bishkek we get picked up by a man from Dagestan, who after knowing us for only a few minutes (without any English) invites us to his home for tea and a snack. THIS is why we LOVE HITCHHIKING!

Is this most beautiful place in Kyrgyzstan? | Jyrgalan, Kyrgyzstan

Welcome to Jyrgalan, our favourite place in all of Kyrgyzstan. This beautiful, bucolic village is found in the eastern part of the country, just an hour from Karakol and on the Kazakhstan border. It's home to some of the most spectacular mountains in Kyrgyzstan, is a mecca for horse trekking and has incredibly friendly and hospitable locals.

Jyrgalan used to be a mining town during the Soviet times, but in recent years it has reinvented itself as an adventure tourism destination.

In the village cows, horses, goats and dogs wander down the streets and kids come running up to say hi. People invite you into their house for tea, and you are instantly taken back to a simpler, peaceful time.

The hiking in Jyrgalan is fantastic, and from the village, you can head off on anything from a few hours to over a week of trekking through the peaks and valleys.

If you're looking for a wonderful place to spend some time in Central Asia, we highly recommend visiting Jyrgalan, Kyrgyzstan.
