Kyrgyzstan in a week

This video tells the story of the 7-day trip we took through northeast Kyrgyzstan.

When I told my friends that I had planned a trip to Kyrgyzstan, the most common answer was Kyrgyz what?
And I repeated Kyrgyzstan!

Our travel plan was based on the experience of our dear guide and friend, Aman from the company Kyrgyz Riders, who I strongly advise if you want to travel to this country.

Located in Central Asia, Kyrgyzstan is bordered by Kazakhstan to the northwest and north, by China to the east and south, and by Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to the south and west. Most of Kyrgyzstan's borders run along mountain crests. Formerly a constituent republic of the U.S.S.R., Kyrgyzstan declared its independence on August 31, 1991. The capital is Bishkek.

Kyrgyzstan is an amazing, uncommon travel destination. With an incredible display of rivers, waterfalls, and nearly 2,000 lakes, its beautiful mountainous landscape has provided the setting for over 2,000 years of history. We spent 10 days in Kyrgyzstan and explored many of its most famous places.

So our travel plan was to explore the following places in 7 days: Jalgyz-Karagay pass, Song-Kol lake, Tash-Rabat, Chatyr-Kol Lake, Kel-Suu lake, KochKor Village, Eagle Hunting Experience, The Skazka Canyon, Jetty-Oguz red mountains, Karakol village, and Grigorievka gorge.

Tokmok, Kyrgyzstan

Nel piazzole delle giostre a Tokmok, a nord del Kirghizistan ,al confine con il Kazakistan, si sente l'influenza italiana nella musica. Dalle casse esce un ritornello in italiano ed è addirittura la radio in diretta.

Is Kyrgyzstan the most underrated country?!

Top Things To Do: Bishkek Kyrgyzstan City Tour

As the world continues opening up for travel, I’ve decided now is the time to explore Bishkek Kyrgyzstan. :)

Check out this episode of Top Things To Do: Bishkek Kyrgyzstan City Tour for all the fun details about my trip.

The adventure starts out in Dubai, and I take a flight to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan and then I’ll share some cool spots to explore, delicious cuisines and more!

What makes Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek so special?

The capital of Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek, is also the largest city in the country. It lies in the Valley of Chu River and has the Alamein and Alaarcha rivers in its surroundings.

Bishkek presents the best combination of modern and natural beauty. There are plenty of flights to and from Asia or Europe. There are several ways to move around Bishkek, including buses, taxis, and minivans. The city has wide boulevards and lots of public buildings made with Soviet-style marble blocks in its interior courtyards.

Besides limestone architectures, the city has thousands of smaller private houses outside the central city. The beautiful and wide streets in Bishkek follow a grid pattern. Most of these boulevards have narrow channels on both sides and innumerable trees that work as a shelter for pedestrians in the hot summers.

Kyrgyzstan (/ˌkɜːrɡɪˈstɑːn/ KUR-gih-STAHN;[8] Kyrgyz: Кыргызстан Kırğızstan Kyrgyz pronunciation: [qɯrʁɯsˈstɑn]), officially the Kyrgyz Republic (Kyrgyz: Кыргыз Республикасы, romanized: Kırğız Respublikası; Russian: Кыргызская Республика, tr. Kyrgyzskaya Respublika), and also known as Kirghizia (Russian: Киргизия [kʲɪrˈɡʲizʲɪjə]),[9] is a country in Central Asia.[10] Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked country with mountainous terrain. It is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west and southwest, Tajikistan to the southwest and China to the east. Its capital and largest city is Bishkek.

Kyrgyzstan's recorded history spans over 2,000 years, encompassing a variety of cultures and empires. Although geographically isolated by its highly mountainous terrain, which has helped preserve its ancient culture, Kyrgyzstan has been at the crossroads of several great civilizations as part of the Silk Road and other commercial and cultural routes. Though long inhabited by a succession of independent tribes and clans, Kyrgyzstan has periodically fallen under foreign domination and attained sovereignty as a nation-state only after the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Since independence, the sovereign state has officially been a unitary parliamentary republic, although it continues to endure ethnic conflicts,[11][12] revolts,[13] economic troubles,[14][15] transitional governments[16] and political conflict.[17] Kyrgyzstan is a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Eurasian Economic Union, the Collective Security Treaty Organization, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the Turkic Council, the Türksoy community and the United Nations.

Ethnic Kyrgyz make up the majority of the country's six million people, followed by significant minorities of Uzbeks and Russians. Kyrgyz is closely related to other Turkic languages, although Russian remains widely spoken and is an official language, a legacy of a century of Russification. The majority of the population are non-denominational Muslims.[18] In addition to its Turkic origins, Kyrgyz culture bears elements of Persian, Mongolian, and Russian influence.

Cholpon Ata— a resort area on the northern shore of Issyk Kul lake

Karakol — a gem at the remote east end of Issyk Kul.
Kochkor — just south of Balykchy, serves as a launch pad for treks up into the Tian Shan Mountains.
Naryn — right up in the Tian Shan, near Lake Song Kul, the gateway to the entire southeastern region, its ruins, mountains, and high alpine lakes.
Osh — Kyrgyzstan's second largest city, a fascinating, 3,000 years old, wildly diverse, Ferghana Valley market town home to Central Asia's biggest and busiest outdoor market.
Talas — a northwestern town just north of Besh-Tash National Park
Tokmok — dwarfed by nearby Bishkek, but still large by Kyrgyzstani standards, Tokmok is right by the ancient Burana Tower and the ruins of an ancient Silk Road capital, Ak-Beshim.
Toktogul — small city between the two bigs cities Bishkek and Osh. 280 km from Bishkek to south and 400km in the north from Osh. The city situated near big reservoir Toktogul.

The caravanserai of Tash Rabat — a well-preserved 15th century stone caravanserai near Naryn.
Burana Tower — all that remains of the ancient Silk Road capital of Balasagun, a massive minaret standing alone on the step.
Ala Archa National Park — gorgeous Tian Shan high alpine landscapes within easy striking distance of Bishkek.
Toktogul area — There are a lot of lost lakes in the region of Toktogul. Kara suu mountains lake, Kapka mountain lake and Ak kol mountains lake.

Toktogul reservoir and spending the day with a local family | Central Asia Vlog

On my way to Osh, the second biggest city in Kyrgyzstan down south, I stop at Toktogul where I'll be spending the night. On the marshrutka (that I filmed in the previous video), an old Kyrgyz man kindly invited me to spend the day in his household in Toktogul with his family (his son and kids, his wife, etc.) His son drove us to Toktogul reservoir (or lake) where we had a nice dip and ate watermelon with the kids. It was very hot but not humid at all! We then went back home to have lunch. There was a meat stew with salad and freshly-fried traditional bread (Borsok). I ate everything except meat since I am plant-based. I spent the night at a hostel room that I have pre-booked a week before and left the next morning for Osh.

The video was taken somewhere around July 2022

Exploring Kyrgyzstan - The Last Soviet Corner in Central Asia

Nestled in the heart of Central Asia lies a hidden gem: Kyrgyzstan. This enchanting country boasts stunning mountain ranges, shimmering alpine lakes, and a rich nomadic culture that spans centuries. But what truly sets Kyrgyzstan apart is its fascinating Soviet past, which is still visible in the many relics and artifacts that dot the landscape. From grandiose Soviet-era monuments to the stark, utilitarian architecture of the city centers, Kyrgyzstan offers a unique window into a bygone era.

Me and my friend Andrew went to Kyrgyzstan for several days to explore local culture and to find hidden soviet gems.

Burana Tower. What an amazing place. Although only a tower remaining and some very special Turkic gravestones, were had the best time visiting this historical place. Tokmok - The Green Valley (Timelapse)

Tokmok means Hammer in Kyrgyz. It is one of the biggest industrial settlements in the country, and everyone who comes here seems to be looking for something.

When Germans come to Tokmok, they want to find Germans.
When Chinese come to Tokmok, they want to find poets.
When Americans come to Tokmok, they want to find terrorists.

I came with the night, looking for everything.

It was dark, and some of the buildings seemed to be empty. I set up the tripod in a hidden spot, wanting to stay unseen, but the night sent me a group of young men. They were dressed in black, and one of them was wearing a skinhead. He introduced himself as Ruslan. It turned out they were all very nice.

I told them I was taking footage for a project about Kyrgyzstan, and Ruslan said the buildings were dangerous. Bad people were living in them, was I not able to hear their voices? He pointed to his ear, and yes, there were faint sounds coming from the hollow insides of the buldings. He offered to take me there the next day, but I never heard from him again.

I stayed for a few days, and I found the terrorists first. Or rather, I found the place where they used to live, where they went to school, where they played with their friends before they moved to the US and blew up the Boston Marathon. People knew them still, but they seemed tired of foreigners asking questions, so I looked at the unloading of sugar beet instead. Lots and lots of sugar beet. I figured I had found my terrorists.

Then I went looking for the poet. I took a cab and told the driver to go in a direction southwest of town. We went on and on until I pointed to a place with a few holes in the ground. The driver shook his head and left, and I set down my gear and gently stroked past the ruins that were once Suyab, the supposed birthplace of Li Bai, one of the greatest poets in history. I looked at the green valley and at the mountains in the distance, and it slowly dawned on me that they hadn't changed much during the last one and a half millenia. I had found my poet.

The next day I took another cab to a place called Rotfront, a former German village. Life had never been easy for the residents, but it got worse when Stalin enslaved them into gigantic construction projects while their children were growing up with nomads in the pastures. Decades later, when the Soviet Union fell, most of them somehow ended up back in Germany, a place that they had not set foot in for two hundred years, a place where people looked at them as Russians. I stayed with Wilhelm, a gentleman from Germany who had moved here to teach the language and keep the memory alive. He advised me to visit the graveyard, which I did.

At the graveyard, I found an old man who was putting down flowers at another old man's grave. He was of Russian descent, and he didn't mind talking. This was my best friend, he said, pointing at the grave stone. I read the name on the plate. It was Rudolf, one of the children of the pasture.
I asked a stupid question: Was he your very best friend?
The old man laughed: When Rudolf came down from the mountains, he was about 10 years old, and his Kyrgyz was better than his German or his Russian. We were the same age, and we became friends right there and then. We never left this village. He was the best friend I ever had!
I could see the old guy's eyes turn a bit watery, so I bid my good-bye and walked around the graveyard some more. I didn't expect to come across an inscription that would burn itself right into my soul:

I AM HOME. ARE YOU COMING, TOO?

I had found my Germans.
