Transnistria travel guide: Tiraspol / Bender day trip through Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic
A short video with all the crucial information for visiting Transnistria as a tourist, all in one place. I visited in March 2019.
As you’ll see in this guide, I recommend a day trip from Chisinau, Moldova - you won’t need anymore than 5/6 hours to see a lot of what the country has to offer.
The border guards aren’t as menacing as you’d imagine but things are so much easier (especially if you don’t speak Russian) if you arrange a taxi (I paid €60 return) as the driver will help you with the Russian peacekeepers and getting a visa at the border.
Take you passport everywhere and DO NOT lose the paper visa you’re given at the border crossing.
I also recommend booking a tour guide in advance. I used - they allowed me to customise my trip, and my guide, Antony, was friendly and very knowledgeable.
You’ll get a much richer experience with a guide as Transnistria is not geared up for tourists, and you won’t have the luxury of having a Transnistrian SIM card to use Google maps.

NOVEMBER 2019 After a wonderful 3 days in Comrat it was time to head to the republic of Transnistria, also known as Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublica (PMR).
We thought we had to go via Chisinau, but it turns out that there were daily marshrutkas that ran directly from Comrat to Tiraspol!
It was a great opportunity to see the countryside and to enjoy a scenic marshrutka ride!

In this episode, David tours this breakaway state of Moldova to show you what to see in Transnistria, a unique place with many Soviet traditions. Transnistria declared independence from Moldova in 1990. It still forms part of Moldova but relies on Russia for military and economic support. The United Nations doesn’t recognize Transnistria but it remains an autonomous state that tourists are welcome to explore.
David begins his tour of Transnistria at the History and Military Memorial in the city of Bendery – a memorial dedicated to the fallen soldiers of three wars (WWII, Russo-Turkish War, and the civil war of Transnistria that took place from in 1992). David’s guide Natalia explains a little bit more about the memorial.
David’s second stop is the 16th century Bendery Fortress built during Ottoman rule. The fortress is about 69 square hectares and has a museum inside. One exhibit displays military artifacts and memorabilia from the civil war of Transnistria in 1992.
Afterwards, David and Natalia continue their tour of what to see in Transnistria by heading to the capital city of Tiraspol, which also happens to be the second-largest city in Moldova. They make a stop at two other war memorials commemorating the fallen soldiers of several wars and a famous Russian general, Alexandr Suvorov. In case you’re wondering, the Soviets were big on building war memorials!
After exploring the main sites of Transnistria, David and Natalia make their way to Kumanek Tavern Restaurant to try some traditional Ukrainian food such as Borshch (vegetable soup made out of beets, cabbage, potatoes, carrots, onions, and garlic). The beets are what give it its intense red color. David also tries Kiev cutlet with potatoes and mushrooms.
Not one to miss the opportunity to try a local alcoholic beverage, David enjoys a 10-year-old glass of cognac by the well-known Transnistrian label KVINT.

Moldavsko na kole - Kišiněv, Tiraspol a nejvyšší hora Moldavska | Travel vlog #4
Vlog z Moldavska tentokrát s podtextem kolem Moldavska na kole. Teda s tím kolem to až tak slavné nebylo. Více ve videu.
Nápad odjet do Moldavska jsem měl již dříve, ale byl to jen nápad a do realizace měl daleko. To se však změnilo v září 2021, konkrétně 6.9. po mém neúspěšném výstupu na Zugspitze. Wizzair totiž udělal atraktivní akci a já zároveň potřeboval vybrat dovolenou. No a takto jsem koupil letenky do Moladavska na 16.9. s příletem do česka 23.9.
Plán co dělat byl jasný. Zdolám nejvyšší horu Moldavska Dealul Bălănești, která se je svými neuvěřitelnými 430 m spíše nevýrazným kopcem. A když už jsem se chtěl pustit do takového hrbolku, proč ne na kole. Z Kišiněva je to na samotný vrchol přibližně 90 km a já se rozhodl, že by to šlo zpět vzít přes klášter Orheiul Vechi a vinné sklepy Cricova. Přibližně 260 km trek jsem plánoval na 4 dny a následně jsem chtěl udělat výlet do Tiraspolu, hlavního města neexistujícího státu Podněstří. Závěr šíleného výletu jsem plánoval zakončit v Kišiněvě. Jenže celý tento plán se začal hroutit již při reálném sestavování. Prvním problémem bylo, že můj plán nepočítal se zavřeným sklepem v obci Cricova. Zároveň poté, co jsem nastudoval informace, věděl jsem, že po tamních silnicích je 260 km na kole ne úplně reálných a hlavně se začal kazit výhled počasí. Takže jsem plán předělal poprvé a výlet na kole jsem zkrátil na 3 dny a délku jízdy jsem upravil pod 160 km. To jsem však ještě nevěděl co přijde v Moldavsku a že ani tento plán neklapne.
A jak že to celé dopadlo? :) O tom je přeci tento vlog.

When I visited Moldova, I knew I had to visit the non-existent state of Transnistria and its capital, Tiraspol. I thought it would be an interesting city and that I would go back in time. There was communism in my state, but I never saw the statue of Lenin. I was also looking forward to their currency.
The reality was a surprise to me. It is strange and Russia's support is slowly visible on every corner, but overall this almost state works. The center of Tiraspol is beautiful and renovated. If you look at several streets next to it, it's not so nice anymore, but it's similar in Chisinau. But what made me very happy, the people here are very friendly and that's what it's all about. Everyone has helped, and if you can speak at least a little Russian, you will experience real magic here. I will definitely never forget Tiraspol.
I am also curious what the future of Tiraspol will be, whether Transnistria will once really become independent or, conversely, unite with Moldova. However, I leave politics aside and do not want to solve it. I am glad that I was able to visit Tiraspol and see the city with my own eyes.
Když jsem navštívil Moldavsko, věděl jsem, že musím navštívit neexistující stát Podněstří a jeho hlavní město Tiraspol. Říkal jsem si, že to bude zajímavé a že se jakoby vrátím v čase. U nás byl komunismus, ale jsem jej nazažil. Byl jsem zvědavý na jejich vlastní měnu a chtěl jsem si pár drobných přivézt na památku.
Realita pro mě byla překvapením. Sice je to celé zvláštní a podpora Ruska je vidět téměř na každém rohu, ale celkově tento skoro stát funguje. Centrum Tiraspolu je krásné a opravené. Pokud se kouknete několik ulic vedle, už to tak dokonalé není, ale podobné je to i v Kišiněvě. Co mě však velmi potěšilo, lidé jsou zde velmi přátelští a o tom to celé je. Každý mi ochotně pomohl a když člověk umí aspoň trochu rusky, zažije zde opravdové kouzlo. Na Tiraspol určitě nikdy nezapomenu.
Také jsem zvědavý, jaká bude budoucnost Tiraspolu, zda se Podněstří jednou opravdu osamostatní a nebo naopak dojde ke sjednocení s Moldavskem. Politiku však nechávám stranou a nechci jí řešit. Já jsem rád, že jsem mohl Tiraspol navštívit a vidět město na vlastní oči.

Transnistria, or PMR, is a country that technically does not exist. Only three other unrecognized republics disagree with this opinion. Russia also considers Transnistria a part of Moldova. However, it pays pensions to local old people and supplies free gas to the homes of Pridnestrovians. And Russian peacekeepers are also here on a permanent basis. But the real power in the region belongs to the Sheriff's company.

A complete walk around and through Bender Fortress | Trip to Moldova & Transnistria 2021
Bender Fortress was built as Fort Tighina at the beginning of the 16th century by the Moldavian ruler Ștefan cel Mare near the former town of Tighina in Moldavia. After the city was conquered for the Ottoman Empire in 1538 under Suleyman I, it was given the new name Bender, which derives from the Turkish term gate. During the Ottoman rule, the fort was then also rebuilt into the Bender Fortress.
For a long time, Bender Fortress was the center of Islam in Moldova. However, it was open to western rulers. Thus, the Swedish King Charles XII found a refuge in Bender when he escaped into exile after the defeat in the Battle of Poltova. With him came Ivan Stepanovich Masepa, captain of the Ukrainian Cossacks, who later died at the fortress.
Charles XII, however, from here repeatedly tried to incite the Ottoman Empire to war against the Russian Empire. A slip-up in the delivery of an order from the Sultan finally led to the melee of Bender. As a result, Charles and his followers had to leave the camp. According to Andrei, the face of the lion on the coat of arms of Bender is supposed to be the image of the Swedish king.
During the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-1774, Bender was besieged by a 33,000-man Russian army under Count Pyotr Ivanovich Panin from July to September 1770 and captured with heavy losses. A second siege took place during the Russo-Turkish War of 1787-1792 in the summer of 1789. It was not until the night of November 3, 1789 that the main Russian army under Field Marshal Potemkin achieved the surrender of the fortress, in which General Mikhail Kutuzov excelled in particular, whose cavalry smashed an attempted relief by the Budzhak Tatars on the outskirts of the city, demoralizing the defenders. In accordance with Potemkin's promise, the entire Muslim population of the city was allowed to sell their land and livestock after the surrender. According to the Peace of Jassy of 1791, the lands east of the Dniester were then transferred to Russia. In 1792, on the other side of the river, the city of Tiraspol was founded by the Russian commander Alexander Suvorov.
During the Russo-Turkish War, the world-famous tenth tall tale of Baron of Munchhausen also took place. His ride on the cannonball starts at the Bendery fortress. According to the story, his general had once asked him to spy on the siege of the Crimean fortress of Ocakiv.
As a result, the baron swung on a cannonball launched from Bendery and flew with it to the besieged fortress. His return flight was even more spectacular. For this, the Liar Baron is said to have transferred to a cannonball coming towards him during the flight.
