NORTHERN ARGENTINAS MUST SEE PLACES!

NORTHERN ARGENTINAS MUST SEE PLACES!

In this video we hire another car from Salta and head out for more adventures in the incredible wilderness of Argentina! Heading off to find the Hornacal 14 coloured mountain we stop off on route in the tiny desert town of Tilcara which is a beautiful, rustic and quaint little place that we have dreamt about going back to ever since!

As usual we had lunch, wandered around the town, and fell in love with some more South American street dogs before making our way for the final stretch of the crazy journey up to the Hornacal 14 coloured mountains. We drove up the unpaved track which took us to 4350 masl and wow did we feel that altitude! There’s an ambulance stationed in the car park every day for good reason and warning signs about not walking or running due to altitude sickness and dizziness.

Luckily the car park places you right in front of the 14 coloured mountains so you don’t have to walk far, but just stepping out of the car took our breath away, I don’t mean because of the beautiful scenery I mean literally the second we stood up outside we struggled to breathe. We definitely should have had some cocoa leaves before coming here and plan to as we travel to more high altitude places in future.

The 14 coloured mountain really is incredible and is definitely one of the must see places in Argentina, we had a beautiful sunny day to enjoy another of natures masterpieces in Argentina, it is real, when you see pictures you’ll think it’s been edited to look that way but it really does look that incredible!

After a scenic drive back we decided to spend the night in Tilcara as we liked it so much and finished the day off at a Parilla filled with local musicians and great food before spending another chilly night in the desert.

Next time!

Join us next time where we head off on another high altitude adventure to the third largest salt flat in the world - Salinas Grandes!

Argentina's Northwest - Things to do in Salta, Cafayate & Purmamarca

I traveled to the Northwest of Argentina to explore the colorful valleys, taste the wine and to show you the best things to do in Salta, Cafayate and Purmamarca

The stunning regions of Salta and Jujuy are not as popular outside of Argentina but offer so much to see and do. I've heard of the Valles Calchaquiés and the Hill of the seven colors before but I was overwhelmed seeing it myself.

Starting in Cafayate I take you on a journey to both regions and introduce you to the wineries of Cafayate where the Torrontés is produced, I explore the Quebrada de las Conchas with its rock formations, I visit the Hill of Seven colors in Purmamarca at the Quebrada de Humahuaca and I show you around in one of the most beautiful cities of Argentina: Salta.

Again I was able to fly the drone to give you a scale of these impressive landscapes and I got some really nice aerial footage of the red Canyons as well as the vineyards and Cafayate.

Beside all those sights in Salta & Jujuy I recommend you to try the local food. The empanadas, the locro, the humitas and tamales are the most typical food and so delicious!

RUINS of Tilcara (Pucará) ☀️???? + Trying LLAMA STEAK for Dinner in Jujuy, Argentina ????????

Welcome to another travel adventure in the province of Jujuy in northern Argentina! In today's video we'll be visiting the ruins of Tilcara (also known as Pucará), touring a high altitude botanical garden, and trying llama steak at a restaurant specializing in northern dishes with a contemporary twist!
We started our morning with a visit to Tilcara's main attraction, which is the Pucará. This is an archaeological site that sits on the outskirts of town. The numerous constructions you see here were built by the Omaguaca, who were a pre-Inca tribe that settled the area around the 12th century.

At its peak, Pucará would have covered 15 acres and housed around 2,000 inhabitants. However, by the late 15th century, the tribes in this area were conquered by the Incas, whose domination of the area only lasted for about half a century, ending with the arrival of the Spaniards who founded the modern town of Tilcara.

After visiting Pucará, we walked over to the high altitude botanical gardens, where you can see all sorts of cacti (cardones) and flowers. We also befriended the sweetest dog ever!

We then drove over to the nearby town of Maimará, best known for the Painter's Palette, featuring these beautiful multicoloured jagged hills in soft shades of pastel.

Just off the side of the highway near the south entrance to Maimará, we also visited Mirador El Monolito which is a cool lookout point that offers views over the whole town and also the Painter’s Palette. It’s worth the stop if you have a rental car, and are a bit more in control of your schedule.

Later that evening, we went out for dinner to our favourite restaurant in Tilcara called 'El Nuevo Progreso'. They specialize in northern Argentine cuisine with a contemporary twist. We found this restaurant on our first day in Tilcara and the food was so good that we just kept going back and trying their various dishes. For this particular dinner Sam ordered the llama steaks with Andean potatoes, and I tried the purple tamal stuffed with charqui (salted dehydrated beef). Both meals were excellent!

And that is all for today’s episode. We’ll see you in the next video where we begin the two-day journey back to Salta, then Buenos Aires, and onwards to a new country!

Tilcara ????

¿Cómo llegar a Tilcara cómodamente?

ARGENTINA VLOG: EXPLORING PURMAMARCA, SALINAS GRANDES AND TILCARA | SOUTH AMERICA TRIP VLOG 2

Exploring Purmamarca, Salinas Grandes and Tilcara | Northern Argentina. Scroll down for more details & useful links!

Places featured in this video:

PURMAMARCA

Purmamarca is a picturesque town in Jujuy famous for the Cerro de 7 colores (Mountain of 7 colours) and its handicraft market. It also serves as a starting point for tour to Salinas Grandes (Argentina's largest salt flats)

SALINAS GRANDES

After a bit of sightseeing in Purmamarca, we asked around for tour buses to Salinas Grandes. There was only one company running a tour on that day. We paid $10 USD per person. If you're thinking of taking a tour to Salinas Grandes, there's no need to book in advance, just ask around upon arrival at the bus station.

TILCARA

Probably the most hipster and lively town in Jujuy, Tilcara is a must see while in Jujuy (many travellers set base here to explore the province). On this occasion we went to Pucara de Tilcara (pre-hispanic archeological site), but if you have time, we also recommend hiking Garganta del Diablo, which culminates in a waterfall.
