At Germany's biggest lake, the Bodensee (lake Constance), is one of the best cities to visit in Germany. If you are planning to travel the South of Germany make sure to put it on your route, it's the perfect place if you're looking for an authentic & traditional German experience. Konstanz is a city on Lake Constance (Bodensee), in southern Germany. Its preserved medieval district of Niederburg includes the Romanesque Konstanz Cathedral, known for its mix of decorative styles and a Gothic spire. The town hall is covered in delicate frescoes and has a Renaissance-style courtyard. The Rosgartenmuseum chronicles the region’s cultural history, exhibiting prehistoric to 20th-century objects.
Sidling up to the Swiss border, bisected by the Rhine and outlined by the Alps, Konstanz sits prettily on the northwestern shore of Lake Constance. Roman emperors, medieval traders and the bishops of the 15th-century Council of Constance have all left their mark on this alley-woven town, mercifully spared from the WWII bombings that obliterated other German cities.
When the sun comes out, Konstanz is a feel-good university town with a lively buzz and upbeat bar scene, particularly in the cobbled Altstadt and the harbour, where the voluptuous Imperia turns. In summer the locals, nicknamed Seehasen (lake hares), head outdoors to the leafy promenade and enjoy lazy days in lakefront lidos.
Konstanz is a city in southern Germany. It lies on the border with Switzerland and on Lake Constance (Bodensee), exactly where the river Rhine exits the lake. The city is split in two by the Rhine. Although the Rhine is the usual border between Switzerland and Germany, the historic part of Konstanz lies on the south (Swiss) side of the Rhine and is more or less an enclave.
Konstanz has traces of civilization dating from the stone age and was settled by the Romans in about 50 CE. Konstanz was an important trade centre and a spiritual centre. At the council of Konstanz in 1414-1418, a papal election was held, ending the papal schism. Konstanz attempted to join the Swiss Confederacy in about 1460, but was voted down. Due to its proximity to Switzerland, Konstanz was not bombed during world war II and its historic old town remains intact. It is a historic city with a charming old town, and could be called the jewel of the region.

How to get there by ZVV?
From Bülach take the S3, S9, S36 or S41 to and further with the S41 to Embrach-Rorbas.
From there, take the Postbus 522 to “Teufen ZH, Unterteufen” or “Teufen ZH, Schulhaus”
The Tössegg is an idyllic destination on the Rhine. Here the Töss flows into the Rhine. A nice place for swimming, barbecuing, refreshments or sailing.
The Tössegg lies between the Irchel, Dattenberg and Rhinsberg ranges. Here the river Töss flows into the river Rhine. The place with bathing opportunities, barbecue areas, restaurant, Bäsebeizli and ship connection to the Rhine Falls is a popular destination and starting point for walking and hiking trails in all directions.
The Tössegg belongs to the municipality of Freienstein-Teufen at an altitude of 346 m. Hiking trails lead up and down the Rhine and take you to the popular wedding church from Buchberg over the vineyards, to Eglisau or to the ruins of a Roman watchtower.

Freienstein Teufen is a small beautiful village in Canton Zürich with beautiful Swiss Green Hills. We went there to meet our some friends and also thought to explore the village and its beautiful Hills and surroundings. There is also a small lake in the Village. After exploring all these i couldn't stop myself from filming these magical moments as they are so eye-catching and the weather was also very pleasant. meanwhile it's Spring time in Switzerland and as you can see in my clips the Mustard Fields have freshly grown and they look so heavenly. So filming the Spring beauty with my #DJIPhantom4 Drone and #GoProHero7 totally worth it. I hope you guys enjoy my video ????????

Mystic medieval castle ruins Freienstein near Bülach & Embrach | Canton Zurich, Switzerland 2023
The ruins of Freienstein Castle, also called Alten-Teufen Castle, is the ruin of a hilltop castle at 460 meters above sea level in the municipality of Freienstein-Teufen in the canton of Zurich on a hill above a vineyard.
The castle was built around 1250 by a baron of Tengen. In 1254 Conrad de Tengen gave it to his daughter Ita and her husband, Baron Egolf von Hasle (also Egilolf de Hasli). In this context the castle is mentioned in documents for the first time. Egolf and his descendants now called themselves Barons of Freienstein. Thus the village also received the name Freienstein. The hazel branch in the (new) coat of arms refers to the descent of the barons of Hasli, the lion probably goes back to the Kyburg lion.
In 1302 Egolf sold the Meierhof Freienstein to the monastery of Töss with the consent of his sons Heinrich and Johannes. This Heinrich was married to Nertha von Tüfen, in 1282 he was land judge in the Zürichgau and died after 1314.
In 1334 or 1338 the castle was apparently destroyed by citizens of Zurich, but was rebuilt afterwards. In 1360, with Johannes von Freienstein, the Freienstein family died out in the male line. After that, the castle changed hands several times. In 1436 the knight Herrmann Künsch from Schaffhausen was the owner of the castle. Since he had captured a man from the county of Kyburgern in 1443, Winterthur and Diessenofer under the bailiff and later mayor of Zurich Heinrich Schwend marched in front of the castle and burned it down. The prisoner was forgotten in his dungeon and suffocated in the smoke.
In 1485 knight Felix Schwarzmurer acquired the castle. After his death in 1492 the ruins came to Hans Erhart and Urban zum Thor von Teufen. In 1600, the jurisdiction and lordship of Teufen came to the Zurich von Meiss family, in whose possession it remained until it was sold in 1838. The last owner was Lieutenant Colonel Gottfried von Meiss-Trachsler (1785-1862). In 1975, the von Meiss-Trachsler community of heirs donated the ruin to the Canton of Zurich. Thanks to a donation by Franz Xaver Arnet, a friend of the castle, and contributions from the federal government, the canton and the municipality, the ruin was conserved in 1976 and placed under the protection of the Swiss Confederation.
In 1806, a large part of the castle stones were quarried and used to build the Töss Bridge.
The sod well west of the tower was discovered in 1968. In 1981/82 it was completely excavated. From the bottom of the castle moat, the builders had driven a shaft of 2.30 by 2.40 meters side length and 26.40 meters depth into the molasse rock. Tufa blocks at depths of 10 and 15 meters show that the shaft was walled up to the level of the base of the tower. The total depth of the well is 33.5 meters.
The legend about the end of the castle
One winter day, the beautiful daughter of a free man from Embrach, a respected and influential man, went to visit some acquaintances. While doing so, she forgot the time, and she could not start her return until after nightfall. She had to march through the dark forest and suddenly she realized with horror that she was being pursued by a hungry wolf. However, she was able to get to safety in the Kymenhof. After a young lad there offered to accompany her home, the two fell in love and promised to be faithful to each other. At that time, the robber baron of Freienstein also knew about the beauty of the girl. He wanted to have the girl in his castle, but got a refusal every time. One day, when the girl was alone in the forest looking for firewood, the robber baron came and wanted to persuade her again to come with him to the castle. She refused and the knight put her on his horse and took her to his castle where she had to submit to his will. Her father tried to free his daughter with a clever trick - he let himself be hired by the robber baron as a Swabian falconer - and he succeeded. But he himself was discovered by the knight and thrown into the dungeon. The daughter immediately alerted her father's most influential friends in Kyburg Castle. The Landgrave of Kyburg immediately went to the castle of Freienstein with a troop of heavily armed warriors to free her father. After a siege, the castle tower was set on fire and the fortress was taken.

In this Video I have a walk in Rorbas and Freienstein-Teufen, Zurich. The video was recorded on September 13, 2020, between approximately 08:00 and 10:00 in the morning.
Rorbas is a small community in the canton of Zurich. The village has about 3000 inhabitants. There are several architectural monuments there. For example, the so-called Roman Bridge. A stone bridge, which was first mentioned in 1521.
Freienstein-Teufen is a village in canton Zurich. It is the neighboring village of Rorbas. The village name is derived from the castle Freienstein. The ruins of Freienstein, also known as Burg Alten-Teufen, are the ruins of an elevated castle at 460 m above sea level in the community of Freienstein-Teufen in the canton of Zurich on a hill above a vineyard.
