Tunisia Road Trip! Driving west: Tunis to El Kef (Tunisia Travel VLOG)

Life in Tunisia is pretty great! Join me in the latest Tunisia travel VLOG as I head off overlanding to explore Kef Governorate, in the north-west of the country, by the border with Algeria. Today we check out the vista at Mellegue Dam, the Ancient Roman arch at Musti (Mustis) and have a few technical issues at a motorway toll booth! Finally we arrive at Dar Sidi Abdallah, which will be the base from which we explore the governorate in later videos. Don't worry, I will also do a separate video on the beautiful facilities at Dar Sidi Abdallah, which I recommend!

Tunisia's Star Wars filming locations: Mos Espa & Ong Jemel, Nefta in Tozeur (Bradt Travel Guides)

This is the second part of a six-location adventure where we track down Tunisia's hidden Star Wars filming sites in the south of the country, around Nefta and Tozeur.

Today we head to the Mos Espa marketplace, which is north of Nefta in Tozeur Governorate, southern Tunisia. We saw scenes from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (Episode I) filmed here between late July and early August 1997, featuring the actors Liam Neeson, Natalie Portman, Ahmed Best, Jake Lloyd, Pernilla August and Kenny Baker. Scenes from Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (Episode II) were also filmed here 10 September 2000 featuring Haydn Christensen and Natalie Portman.

After exploring Mos Espa we then drive 7km off-road across the Chott el-Gharsa salt flats in the Eriguet dunes area to Ong Jemel (this means camel's neck in Arabic). Ong Jemel is a distinctive rocky landmark that was both the Sith landing site on the desert mesa and the Canyon Dune Turn (as part of the Mos Espa podrace circuit).

Thanks to Galaxy Tours for all this information about these amazing filming sites! You can find out more about the company and their work in Tunisia here: or on Twitter:

Tunisia's Highest Town: Exploring Kesra

Today I drive over to the Byzantine Fort of Ksar Lemsa in modern-day Aïn-Lemsa, which is in Kairouan Governorate, Tunisia, North Africa. It is amazingly well preserved and just sitting by the side of the road! Then we head up into the mountains in Siliana Governorate to reach Kesra, Tunisia's highest town. Here we wander around the fascinating Musée du Patrimoine Traditionnel de Kesra as well as enjoying some of the other sites in this very steep town!

Tunisia's Best Beaches (Bizerte, تونس beach vlog Part 3)

Today we are off in the 4x4 exploring some of the more remote but beautiful beaches along Tunisia's northern Bizerte coastline. These include Kef Abed, El Janna and finally the super sandy Aïn Damous!

All of these remote locations will be fully GPS tagged in the upcoming Bradt Travel Guide to Tunisia (1st Edition) that I am busy writing. Which is lucky, as some of these places are pretty remote, and I get lost offroad more than once!

Djebba and Dougga | Exploring Tunisia!

Join me as I hike to Djebba and then visit Dougga, the ancient Roman city!
We leave Tunis early and then drive to Djebba where we hiked up the hills side to enjoy the great views on the mountain top! We can see the farmlands and the villages down below.
We then top the bus to Dougga, a UNISCO World Heritage site, where we have an almost untouched roman village. Its like traveling back in time as we walk through the roman city streets and wonder what life was like back then.

I had a little run in with the local police as they did not want me to use my Sony camera claiming it was professional level. After a lot of back and forth, I ended up using my phone camera to record Dougga.
I am Sorry for the quality and hope to visit there again to better document it.

Please see more information on each site below:

Djebba:
Djebba, also known as Thigibba Bure and Thigibba, is a town and an ancient archaeological site is located in Bājah, Tunisia.
The site is 355 meters above sea level[3] and in ancient times the town was located in the hills overlooking the fertile Bagrada River Valley, and may have been a town in the Roman Province of Africa Proconsularis.

Dougga:
Dougga or Thugga is an ancient Roman city in northern Tunisia, included in a 65 hectare archaeological site.
UNESCO qualified Dougga as a World Heritage Site in 1997, believing that it represents “the best-preserved Roman small town in North Africa”. The site, which lies in the middle of the countryside, has been protected from the encroachment of modern urbanisation, in contrast, for example, to Carthage, which has been pillaged and rebuilt on numerous occasions.

Haouaria | Exploring Tunisia | Cave exploring!

I continue to explore Tunisia as go on a hike to Haouaria, a coastal town and commune in the Nabeul Governorate, Tunisia.
We went to East Haouaria and started our hike at the Port.

We then climbed up the hillside and took in great open scenes of the Mediterranean Sea, the views where just breath taking. We then made out way to an Old Fort on the hills, we had lunch, then as usual, enjoyed some traditional folk music and dancing.

After Lunch we hiked back down the hill but on a different path to an area call Ras El Drek, where we discovered hidden caves with crystal clear water. We took the opportunity to explore and swim although the water was cold!!!

We hiked back to the bus and stopped at Restaurant La Daurade for some coffee and refreshments while we took in to great view of the ocean.

It was an excellent day with great people and friends, I cannot wait till the next trip!!

Exploring Chott el Djerid, Tunisia, North Africa (Tunisia desert travel VLOG)

Join Manolo and I in this Tunisia desert travel VLOG. We drive from Douz across Chott el Djerid (Lagoon of the Land of Palms). Chott el Djerid is an endorheic salt lake to the north-west of Douz. Driving across was the fastest way to get to my next destination: Tozeur. Check out this moonscape! Star Wars fans might recognise this area, as the salt flats were used as a filming location for the exterior of the Lars homestead on Tatooine, first featured in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.

Festival des grenades Testour 2023

Testour is a small town located in the north of Tunisia. The town is perched on the hills of Medjerda Valley, 20 km (12 mi) south-west of Medjez-el-Bab, the crossroads between Tunis, Béja, and the north of Tunisia. It was known during the Roman period, as Tichilla, which means the green grass as it is situated in the mouth of Siliana valley. It was rebuilt in the 1500s by Muslim and Jewish refugees from Andalusia who gave it a distinctive character in building and layout. Today it is a popular pilgrimage for Jews who visit Rabbi Fraji Chawat's tomb.

The city host an international festival of Malouf and traditional Maghrebi music since 1967..

Zaghouan Zipleline! - Tunisia

Another hike through the mountains of north Tunisia. This time we visit Zaghouan, where we roam the hills and old mines and also get some ziplining done!

Early start as usual and Zaghouan is not far from Tunis so just an hour later we were there. We hiked through the hills, taking in the rugged terrain, we explored an old abandoned mine shaft, along with the ruin houses of the mining facilities.

We then made our way through a dry river bed to the ziplining spot, we all had fun zipping across the valleys, some were afraid but still did it.

After the fun of the zipline it was a short hike out then we boarded the bus and visited the Water Temple.
A great day and good hike!

Thanks as always for watching!
