Terre Rouge Mauritius a contrast of loud and tranquil

A busy and tranquil place. Heavy loud traffic and the bustle of people in the downtown shopping district to the tranquil historic cemetery. A two-train station day with a walk in the calming farmlands. Terre Rouge supplies a contrast with all it has to offer.

In the heart of downtown is where the life is a steady beat of loud cars and hooting motorbikes. Sidewalk sellers of all types shouting out their wares become a dull drone in the background that you hardly hear after a few minutes. It seems like the busy section is divided into areas, one will have a lot of snacks, while others seem to only offer fresh fruit and vegetables.

Our breakfast was a quickly made roti, there was a queue and hungry people that must be served fast. The splatted of a thousand previously assembled roti's on the glass divide a testament to this speed. I got the chili one and they tore the paper wrapper to indicate this. Walking the streets between the rain we were brought up short by a hot bread seller. Riki finds hot bread impossible to ignore, so that was our second breakfast. Sweet and buttery, like a hot cross bun but with coconut taking the place of raisins.

Onwards through the rain, we found ourselves trapped in a Noni store by a sudden downpour. The guy manning the stand served us some cure-all tea. It tasted quite pleasant, but the warmth infused our bodies and we were onto the temple. A huge structure, with what looked like houses in it. We didn't enter as the ground was wet and we didn't feel like taking our shoes off.

A short drive up the road and we arrived at the post office, which is the old Terre Rouge train station. It was open and I got to go in and have a look inside. Behind it is the ever-busy M2 highway with a walkway over it, with an obelisk and 2 eagles erected on top of it, it is a grand sight. A short stop at a green space for an unknown sculpture and then off to the cemetery

With a second smaller, but beautiful, train station at Bois Marchand. We were lead around the cemetery by the gatekeeper and his ancient book of burials. He showed us some gravemarkers from the late 1800. Filled with new information we made our way to Saint Joseph chapel, the one you can see from the highway. On the way I told the story of Pagley, a story set in Terre Rouge and now a Bollywood movie. We found even older graves at the chapel.

For some time we had noticed that different religions in Mauritius marked their places of worship in different colours, this held true with the gravemarkers as well. We think it has also spilled out into the political arena. More study is required. Riki mentioned the recent grave robberies and how the Chinese community had set up a community watch. I told the story of how a Muslim saint's body was found.

Heading across the highway we came upon one of the oldest temples in Mauritius, unfortunately, it was locked, but outback were the vegetable fields that supply half the country, I would guess. Running down its center is an ancient aqueduct, with water still flowing through it. A beautiful structure made from stone.

Our final stop was Saint Joseph church. Also locked up. It was at this point we remembered that Joseph was Jesus's stepdad, strange the things you don't really think about. Standing opposite the church is a beautiful old blue shop. We closed out the adventure with me talking about good soil and water, while Riki watched a dog scratch.

10 Reasons To Visit Mauritius in 2021

10 Reasons To Visit Mauritius in 2021.
One of the most beautiful island getaways anywhere in the WORLD is located right here in AFRICA!

This tiny island paradise just east of Madagascar, off the eastern coast of Africa, is one of the most beautiful places on EARTH!

Located in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius is home to only around 1 million people, despite being TWICE the size of Hong Kong. However this island paradise features beautiful weather year round, and plenty for everyone.

Mauritius more than doubles it’s population with tourists who visit each year, as in 2018 when it hosted over 1.4 million visitors, including yours truly.

Most tourists arrive by airplane, however some do arrive by boat. Mauritius is a very popular destination for many from other African countries looking for a getaway without going too far from home.

Hey, 1.4 million people a year cannot be wrong!

So let’s jump into our list of the ten reasons we think you should visit Mauritius!

10. Food

If you love food, you will love your time in Mauritius, trust me!

Mauritian cuisine is one of the most diverse in the world, with influences from French, Indian, African and Asian kitchens coming together to create its unique flavours. Be sure to scan restaurant menus for daube, fish vindaye, chicken or fish kalia (mixed with vegetables), mutton halim (a soup), a classic tomato-based chicken stew and a local take on Indian vindaloo.

You can also try Mauritian snacks such as dhal puri, a traditional flatbread filled with spicy ground split peas and served with chutney. Or try the island’s famous babonne, a fleshy white fish similar to red snapper.

9. Festivals

If you want to experience what’s said to be the largest Hindu pilgrimage outside India, plan a visit during Maha Shivaratri.

Each February, around 500,000 people make the pilgrimage on foot to Grand Bassin, a lake near which stands a giant statue of Lord Shiva.

You can also visit during Diwali, the festival of light, held every Spring, and feast on gâteau patate – sweet potato and coconut cakes made and offered as gifts between families and neighbours.

Other festivals such as Thaipusam, Ganesh Chathurthi, Ugadi and Chinese New Year are also widely celebrated and each of them gives a glimpse into the many cultures that come together to create the island of Mauritius.

8. Markets

Featuring fruit and vegetable vendors, artisans selling handicrafts, spice vendors and street-food hawkers, the markets all over the island offer a cheerful slice of Mauritian life.

Welcome to Chamarel Seven Colored Earth, on the island of Mauritius. The seven-colored land is a natural attraction on the island of Mauritius, which is among the Top 10 best tourist attractions on the island. In a small area, there are sand dunes that contain sand of seven different colors (red, brown, purple, green, blue, purple and yellow). Tropical weather and frequent rains have washed away all water-soluble elements such as silica. What remains are red-black oxides of iron and aluminum, which create different shades of color. It is open throughout the year from 8.30am to 5.30pm in summer and 5pm in winter, and the entrance fee is Rs 325 (adult) and Rs 175 (children). To make this experience even more beautiful, there is a turtle park where you can admire the turtles up close and a souvenir shop and restaurant.

Adventure of Sugar, top tourist attraction in Mauritius

We visited the famous tourist attraction the Adventure of Sugar or L'Aventure du Sucre, as it is officially called. As one of the top must-do tourist attractions in Mauritius, we were expecting big things and boy did it deliver. Starting from the outside with a train and huge sugar mill equipment I was like a kid in a candy store. The adventure comes to life in the museum, it is very well done, taking you from the beginning of Mauritius all the way through the history and actually letting you walk through the internal workings of a mill until you finally leave, with sugar and rum tasting.

Grand River South East Mauritius Vlog

We explore the Grand River South East area or GRSE as everyone seems to call it. We started at the dock where we met a local guy Steve with his boat, Andre. We then walked around the Laguna Beach Hotel and flew the drone over it. Next up was the hunt for food.

Luckily an old BMW 318i stopped us at a great snack shop called Site shop on Google maps. We ate great fish roti and the best-fried chicken in Mauritius. A quick stop at the fish landing and ferry point to look around. I got some solar-powered ice cream.

We continued and got to a lookout point full of monkeys and met Louis. We flew the drone over the waterfall and then headed to the sugar mill, Deep water Beau champ. It was an epic adventure.
