Italy's best kept secret, Abruzzo

I wanted to show you a special place in my heart in Italy, that not many tourists from North America let alone anywhere really venture off to, the region of Abruzzo. The region of Abruzzo is truly undiscovered and I hope this video sheds some light on it as it really deserves to get far more recognition as a place to visit in Italy.

This film will show you the many incredible things about the region of Abruzzo, from the incredible local delicacies like Arrosticini, a staple of the region, to trying some good albeit very strange food on a Trabboci on the coast of the Adriatic and tasting some of the local Montepulciano wines.

Called the green lung of Italy, most of Abruzzo is covered in National Parks and they are some of the most incredible you will ever see! Besides exploring the many national parks at your disposal, another one of my favourite things to do in Abruzzo is explore the many mediavel villages, with such untouched beauty that you feel as though you've stepped back in time.

I hope that you enjoy this video and make sure to LIKE the video, it really does make a huge difference and SUBSCRIBE!

Places to see in ( Teramo - Italy )

Places to see in ( Teramo - Italy )

Teramo is a city and comune in the Italian region of Abruzzo, the capital of the province of Teramo. The city, 150 kilometres from Rome, is situated between the highest mountains of the Apennines and the Adriatic coast. The town is located by the confluence of the Vezzola and Tordino rivers, on a hillside area where the terrain features along with the Mediterranean climate make the territory rich in vineyards and olive groves. The economy of the town is mostly based on activities connected with agriculture and commerce, as well as a sound industrial sector: textiles, foods, engineering, building materials and ceramics. Teramo can be reached from the A14 and the A24 motorways.

The name is already defined in extant manuscripts of the Liber Coloniarum into Teramne, whence its modern form of Teramo. But in the Middle Ages it appears to have been known also by the name of Aprutium, supposed to be a corruption of Praetutium, or rather of the name of the people Praetutii, applied (as was so often the case in Gaul) to their chief city. Thus the name Abrutium is present among the cities of Picenum enumerated by the Geographer of Ravenna (iv. 31); and under the Lombards a comes Aprutii is mentioned. The name has been retained in that of Abruzzo, now a region of Italy.

A settlement of the 1st millennium BC and some buildings of ancient Italic tribes were the object of archaeological excavations. The most ancient historical remains were found in the outskirts of the city, precisely in the neighborhood Madonna delle grazie, where, among many, a burial place with a dagger and a halberd were found. Allegedly, the development of the old settlement was due to the commercial center founded by the Etruscan and Phoenician civilization.

The city's main attractions include:

the Cathedral of Saint Berardo, built in 1158 by bishop Guido II, in Romanesque style. It has a portal in Gothic style, finished in 1332 by the Roman master Deodato di Cosma. It houses a silver antependium by Nicola of Guardiagrele (with 35 scenes of the life of Jesus) and a polyptych by the Venetian artist Jacobello del Fiore depicting the Incoronation of the Virgin. Annexed is a 50-metre-tall (164-foot) bell tower.
the Romanesque church of Sant'Antonio (1127), with a decorated portal. The interior, with a single nave, was renovated along Baroque lines.
the church of San Getulio, built in the early Middle Ages on the ruins of a Roman temple, finally destroyed in 1155 by the Normans. Only the presbyterium and some Romanesque elements of the original building remain today.
the church of San Domenico (14th century) with a fine Virgin with Child.
the sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie (also known as Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie). It has a Romanesque cloister and a 15th-century miraculous wooden statue of the Virgin, attributed to Silvestro dell'Aquila.
the Palazzo Vescovile (Bishops Palace), from the 14th century.
the remains of the Roman theatre (built about 30 BC) and of the amphitheatre (about 3rd–4th century AD). Under Palazzo Savini are remains of a Roman domus, including a 1st-century BC opus tessellatum pavement which depicts a fighting lion and other decorative elements.
the Torre Bruciata (Burnt Tower), a Roman tower from the 2nd century BC, in opus quadratum. The name derives from the traces left by the siege in 1156 by Robert III of Loritello.
Church of Santa Maria de Praediis (10th–11th centuries), built using materials from the destroyed castle and Roman villas and temples.

( Teramo - Italy ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Teramo . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Teramo - Italy

Best Places in Abruzzo

The Abruzzo region in the east of Italy offers enchanting landscapes and plenty of variety. Between the Mediterranean Sea, hilly landscapes, mountains and lakes you will find many beautiful seaside resorts with dreamlike beaches - and wine-growing areas just behind the Adriatic coast. In addition, in Abruzzo you can expect numerous historic towns with enchanting charm, archaeological sites, sanctuaries, churches and castles. And of course the excellent Italian cuisine.
The highlight of this Italian region is its spectacular landscapes and the greatest density of nature reserves in all of Italy. Behind the Abruzzo Adriatic coast, which is about 130 kilometers long, is a strip of hilly land about 20 kilometers wide. The interior is characterized by lakes, plateaus and mountains of the Apennines. Here you will also find the mountain massif Gran Sasso d'Italia, which reaches an altitude of almost 3000 meters. #abruzzo #italy #bestplaces

In this video:
- WHAT are the major attractions that you can't go home without having seen, including Basilica of Collemaggio, The Spanish Fort, Piazza Duomo, The Basilica of San Bernardino, The Fontana delle 99 Cannelle and Fontana Luminosa, Villa Comunale and Palazzo dell’Emiciclo, L'Aquila's porticoes, the green spaces and attractions around L’Aquila. Without forgetting food tips!
- Then, I’ll describe to you HOW to follow a two-day tour to better visit the city, with tips for nearby attractions.
- Finally, we’ll discover WHY to visit L’Aquila city, with its rich history.

L’Aquila is the capital Abruzzo region, in Italy, 100 km from Rome, and dates back to the twelfth century.
L’Aquila is the city where I grew up and I always loved the beauty of its historical center, full of monumental churches, fascinating squares, extended porticoes, all surrounded by mountains!
This city can offer a unique journey through history, traditions, and nature.
So, what are ten possible attractions that I would show to a foreign friend who comes to visit me?

WHAT
1/10: I would start from the Basilica of Collemaggio, the symbol of the city of L'Aquila, and one of the most visited tourist destinations of Abruzzo. Built in 1288, according to the legends here Pope Celestino V was crowned in 1294. On the left side of the church there is the Holy Door: for believers, crossing this door gives the remission of sins.
2/10: The Spanish Fort was built on the highest point of the city in 1534. The Fort has four massive bastions at the corners, and at the entrance, characterized by the precious stone portal, where you can see the double-headed eagle belonged to Charles V.
3/10: Piazza Duomo is the historic meeting place for the people of L'Aquila. Here you can visit the Cathedral of Saints Massimo and Giorgio, the Church of the Holy Souls, and the pair of old fountains of 1300. In Piazza Duomo there are bars, ice cream parlors, and the tourist information office.
4/10: The Basilica of San Bernardino is located in a panoramic position on the top of the steps of via Forte Braccio. The Basilica is characterized by the high Renaissance facade, built by Cola dell'Amatrice in 1525, and inside you can appreciate the majestic wooden ceiling decorated with gold.
5/10: The Fontana delle 99 Cannelle was built in 1274 in the lower area of the city, near the Aterno river. The plant of the fountain is trapezoidal in shape, an architecture of great impact. The name derives from the number of jets of water that start from stone masks, all different from each other. Try counting them up to 99, which is a symbolic and mysterious number in L'Aquila culture.
6/10: Fontana Luminosa stands at the beginning of Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the ideal gateway to the city center, with the Gran Sasso as a background. The two bronze female bodies support the typical Abruzzo basin from which the jets of water flows. Its name is due to the play of light and colors during the night.
7/10: Behind the Villa Comunale there is the complex of Palazzo dell'Emiciclo, built in 1888, now the seat of the Abruzzo Regional Council. It has a rich Ionic portico in a semicircular shape and hosts concerts and events.
8/10: Crossing L'Aquila's porticoes: L'Aquila's porticoes are an authentic piece of the city's past. They cross Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the main street of the historic center, full of admirable buildings, and reach Piazza Duomo.
9/10: Walking in the green: L'Aquila is a center of art and culture, but look around and behind art and culture: you’ll notice Gran Sasso and so many other mountains. The Castle’s park is an example of a place where you can take a relaxing walk, have an aperitif or stop and read a book. Another green and scenic area just outside the walls is Parco del Sole, close to Collemaggio Basilica.
10/10: Attractions around: if you visit L’Aquila do not miss the opportunity to enjoy breathtaking views visiting Gran Sasso, the highest mountain massif of central Italy and the set of several western films by Sergio Leone. And visit also the panoramic castle of Rocca Calascio, the set of the film The name of the rose, with the actor Sean Connery.

FOOD TIPS
And about food and accommodation, read the video’s description to get some tips, and taste the “Arrosticini”, skewers made with the meat of castrated sheep, and the classic “maccheroni alla chitarra”.
