Teotihuacán Pyramids 2022: Best Mexico City Day Trip

Teotihuacán is the best day trip from Mexico City. We share tips and tricks to make the most of your time exploring the pyramids. Don't want to mess with the public bus? Book a private van here:

In this video, we visit the Pyramid of the Sun, Pyramid of the Moon, Temple of Quetzalcóatl, and everything in between along the Avenue of the Dead.

First and foremost, can you still climb the pyramids of Teotihuacán? No. They closed the pyramids during Covid and decided to keep them closed to preserve them. We visited in the end of May 2022 and we asked a few different people and they all gave us the same answer: they have no intention of opening the pyramids back up. It's disappointing, but understandable.

The pyramids of Teotihuacán are about an hour outside Mexico City and easily accessible via the metro and a bus. You don't have to speak Spanish to use public transit in Mexico City - everything is pretty easy to figure out. And it's SO cheap. If you have questions about making the trip after watching the video, ask us in the comments. We'll help you through it.

There are guides available once you enter Teotihuacán, and they may be worthwhile. However, just know that nobody, including historians, really knows much about Teotihuacán. They're all just guessing. You can learn everything anybody knows in about 30 minutes at Museo Antropología's Teotihuacán exhibit.

Here are the tips we have to make sure you have a good experience while exploring the Pyramids of Teotihuacán.

1. Bring water - you can't buy it in the park
2. Bring snacks - also not available anywhere
3. Bring sunscreen - you're completely exposed the entire time
4. Bring cash - you'll need at least 200 pesos per person ($10 USD) for the metro, bus, and admission, plus small bills if you want to buy any souvenirs
5. Wear comfortable shoes - you walk A LOT
6. Beware of open-toed shoes - there are LOTS of fire ants along the Avenue of the Dead
7. There are three bathrooms, located at the Pyramids of the Moon and Sun, and at the Temple of Quetzalcóatl
8. Be nice to the vendors. They're nice and chill. Just smile and say no thank you.
9. Be there when it opens to avoid the crowds and the heat

We definitely recommend you visit the Pyramids of Teotihuacan. They're still worth it even if you can't climb the pyramids. The site is massive, the ruins are impressive, and it's so cool to be in a place with such history (even if we don't really know what that history is - it's amazing).

The Holy City of Teotihuacan ???????? Mexico Pre-Hispanic World Heritage Site

The holy city of Teotihuacan ('the place where the gods were created') is situated some 50 km north-east of Mexico City. Built between the 1st and 7th centuries A.D., it is characterized by the vast size of its monuments – in particular, the Temple of Quetzalcoatl and the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, laid out on geometric and symbolic principles. As one of the most powerful cultural centres in Mesoamerica, Teotihuacan extended its cultural and artistic influence throughout the region, and even beyond. ( )

*Cómo llegar a Teotihuacán

*Cuándo ir a Teotihuacán

LARGEST PYRAMIDS in MEXICO. Aztec Ruins near Mexico City. TEOTIHUACAN by Drone 4k

Mexico is no doubt one of the best travel destinations in the world. The most popular places to visit in Mexico are the beach resorts like Cancun and Tulum, located on the Yucatan peninsula. Mexico is also home to the world's largest pyramid. Many people think that world's largest pyramids are in Egypt, but actually the largest pyramid in the world is located in the town of Cholula close to the city of Puebla. If you are traveling to Mexico City, then you should definitely visit Teotihuacan. Teotihuacan is an ancient city located 40 kilometres northeast of modern-day Mexico City.
Teotihuacan is known today as the site of many of the most architecturally significant Mesoamerican pyramids built in the pre-Columbian Americas. Running down the middle of the site, which was once a flourishing pre-Columbian city, is the Avenue of the Dead. It links the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, the Pyramid of the Moon and the Pyramid of the Sun, the latter two with panoramic views from their summits. Teotihuacan was the largest city in the pre-Columbian Americas, with a population estimated at 125,000 or more, making it at least the sixth-largest city in the world during its epoch. Nobody really knows who has built these amazing pyramids. The Aztecs came to Teotihuacan a lot later and they were amazed by the size of the pyramids.

It is hard to understand the scale of this city from this aerial drone footage of Teotihuacan. When you walk near the pyramids they look massive. Usually there are lots of tourists visiting the pyramids but I got the chance to fly the drone around Teotihuacan when it was completely empty.

Travel Medical Insurance I use:
Get 5% OFF Hey Mondo:

SafetyWing (best for younger travelers + digital nomads):

*I use both of these companies depending on the destination and requirements of entry. If you are going to be abroad for a long time and/or don't need as much coverage, I would recommend SafetyWing. BUT you cannot purchase SafetyWing WHILE in Canada or USA. You can only purchase once already abroad. Hey Mondo is more expensive but offers a higher level of coverage including plans that have trip cancellation/interruption insurance. Hey Mondo would be the better insurance to use if you need travel medical insurance when applying for a visa. Both companies cover covid. I am an affiliate for both companies, but I pay for my own policies.*
