Georgian STREET FOOD at Telavi Bazaar - Market Tour + Cheese Factory | Telavi, Georgia

???????? FRIENDLY GE:
???????? TSIVIS KVELI:

As my adventures in the Republic of Georgia continued, I hit up the town of Telavi to explore its culture and local sites. Come with me as I take you on a tour of the traditional market and cheese factory in Telavi, Georgia!

My boy Tim from Friendly GE and I kicked off our morning in Telavi, the capital of the Kakheti Wine Region. We started at Batonis Tsikhe, an 18th-century fortress whose name translates to The Lord’s Fortress. It was the residence of the kings of Kakheti when it was an independent kingdom.

???????? LEARN MORE ABOUT GEORGIA:
???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:

From the top of one of the watchtowers, we had great views of the area. We got to see the southern and west gates, as well as an old, restored palace that now serves as a museum.

On the grounds is a 900-year-old Giant Plane Tree, which is one of the oldest in the region and stands in front of the statue of the king. There used to be a theater next to it! The tree has a massive hole in the trunk that you can go inside!

From there, we drove through town to the market. I could see colorful buildings and commercial spaces. There was a mix of mid- and low-rises. After we got out, we saw vendors selling clothing, fruit, farming tools, hats, and more.

Finally, we arrived at Telavi Bazaar, a huge covered bazaar where you can buy fresh vegetables, fruits, meat, and more. I could see apricots, peaches, and nectarines. I tried a juicy apricot, walnuts, and sour plums!

Next, we saw some vats of pickled joljoni, which were delicious. We also saw some fresh cheeses, including goat cheese and sulgini, as well as vendors selling churchkhela, which is nuts on a string covered in a hardened paste made from fruit syrup. It’s like a Georgian Snickers bar!

Churchkhela is the perfect snack to take into the mountains. They can be made with walnuts, hazelnuts and pomegranate juice, kiwi juice, and more! Then, we saw some dried persimmons and tried some plum and apple fruit leather. I loved them with the walnut!

Next, I tried honeycomb and walnuts covered in kiwi juice. The vendor was so nice and let me try everything! Further on were vendors selling tomatoes, garlic, cucumbers, peppers, and some incredible cheeses, smoked ham, and meat jelly.

Then, I sampled some Rkatsiteli amber wine, peach chacha, and an amazing honey chacha.

After that, we drove 5 minutes to Tsivis Kveli. “Kveli” means “cheese.” This cheese factory makes over 200 varieties! You can buy several, including gift packs!

Inside, I met George and Nick. We had to put on gowns and hairnets and go through a sanitation station to go through to the facility. They have vats of milk that are cultured and become cheese!

In the cellar, we saw where the cheese is aged on shelves. They have cheese aged in white and black wines, cheese with spices and herbs, and more! They have some with pepper, basil, mint, and many others!

I loved the smell in the cellar. They experiment with flavors and ingredients down there! Next, we saw how they check the acidity of the milk to make sure it’s good. Next, we saw the packaging center, where there was lots of string cheese and others waiting to be packaged.

They vacuum-seal the cheeses and then it was time to try some cheese! They gave me a cheese hat, and then we headed out into their beautiful garden. Scattered around it are clay pots and cannons.

Our cheese tasting menu included seven cheeses, bread, cucumbers, and wine. I loved the smoked roulette, which contained barberries and bacon, the smoked string cheese, and the incredible cheesecake balls the best! What an amazing lunch!

Experience this unique country between East and West, between Russia and Europe, hardly known by anyone in Western countries, although Georgians proudly call themselves (first!) Europeans.

The Republic of Georgia is a country at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, bordering Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Turkey. It is a country full of surprises, where we encounter many traditions we have never seen before (such as Georgian bakers diving headfirst into the hot clay oven and Georgian dance), taste flavors that are unfamiliar to us (such as Churchkhela, Khinkali, and Khachapuri), and learn that Georgia is the cradle of wine and has one of the oldest living languages in the world!

We listen to what young and elderly people have to say, we delve into local markets, where the true essence of Georgian life unfolds before our eyes, we discover towns that transport us back to the days of the Soviet Union, like the mining town of Chiatura, we witness that Stalin is still worshipped (in Gori), we venture into remote and genuine villages like Oni and Ninotsminda, we uncover UNESCO gems (Kutaisi, Ananuri), we marvel at the beauty of the landscapes (Caucasian Mountains, canyons, alpine lakes, Black Sea), we drink healing waters (in Borjomi), we are intrigued by the UNESCO-listed cave city of Vardzia and admire the modernity of Batumi. And last but certainly not least, we immerse ourselves in the exceptional atmosphere of Tbilisi, the captivating capital city.

We become involved with the remnants of the Soviet era and hear the outcry of Georgia's tension-filled relationship with Russia. Since Russia's war on Ukraine, thousands of Russians have fled to this neighboring former Soviet country, causing resentment among Georgians who see Russia as a threat. Throughout history, powerful empires like Russia, Persia, the Ottoman Empire, and the Byzantine Empire have all left their mark, shaping Georgia's destiny and its unique personality!

Explore Georgia, a one-of-a-kind Eurasian country, witness the profound spirit of the Georgian people, who, much like Ukraine, have bravely confronted military conflicts and territorial disputes with Russia, fiercly fighting for freedom and a European identity.

Thank you for watching & commenting!

Much love xx

Visiting The Biggest City In The Georgian Wine Region | Telavi ????????

I moved on from the small town of Sighnaghi to Telavi. With a population of around 20,000 people, it is the biggest city in the Kakheti wine region of Georgia.

My first impressions of the city were that it didn't seem as touristy as Sighnagi. In the centre of the city, I found a 17th century fort, a busy market and some classic Georgian architecture. I would discover much more over the following two days.

Join me as I explore the biggest city in the wine region of Georgia!

TELAVI GEORGIA / Wine tasting and city tour

This Is Georgia...Get Ready! Telavi Georgia. Wine tasting and city tour
Wine was invented in Georgia?! Tastes like it ;)

Pop Quiz: What infamous world leader was born in Georgia?

Join us as we explore this hidden gem of Eastern Europe: Telavi, Georgia, taste some of the best micro wines in the area at Hotel Tela, and get a taste of the cultural and historical monuments that make this town a must add to your Georgia travel list.

Telavi is a little town of one of the oldest countries in the world - Georgia, which is located between Europe and Asia, which is known for its rich historical past, parts of which can be seen in the center of Telavi represented by the palace of king ErekleII but we will go back to king Erekle later... Telavi is the perfect mixture of both, past and present. Aesthetic architecture combined with local people, who are known for their warm hospitality, will rarely leave anyone’s heart untouched.

As we mentioned, parts of the history is widely spread in all the sides of Telavi. A good example of it will be one of the oldest trees which is 900 years old and is so famous that some of the guests of Georgia visit Telavi specifically to see the “rock star” of trees, called “Chadari” (plane tree). The Museum of Georgia is one of the most influential in the region and country. King ErekleII is vindicated in his original form with exhibited exponents and friendly guides, whom eloquently enlivens the whole history for visitors. Museum is not the only footprint made by king Erekle’s epoch. Telavi is proud to have a theatre which was based by the king himself and is still functioning as one of the greatest theaters of the country, known in whole Caucasus region by its theatrical festivals. All the above mentioned, combined with the cafes in the style of European aesthetics and the bookshops make Telavi culturally satisfying as well.

Most of the airlines have flights in the capital city of Georgia - Tbilisi or the countries second largest town Kutaisi. When it comes to transporting inside of the country, you have to remember one thing: Georgia is a small country, so small that you have to try very hard to get lost there... Territory of whole country is 69,700 km² so as you can already tell it’s very easy to move from one town to the other with transports such as taxi or buss.

Along with widely known hotel brands, there are many small and cozy hotels in Telavi which have more than affordable prices to offer. Hotel “Tela” falls right into this category, which not only follows all the common rules of hotel services, but also offers you the experience which is quite unique: they allow you to be the guest at their winery, where they make their own wine in the best traditions of unique way of Georgian winemaking (Georgia is acknowledged by many influential sources as the first country to make wine) with large pitchers under the earth and all.. but it’s not all! You can inspect not only their winery while listening to the story of winemaking, but you can also have a tasting of variety of Georgian wines and cheeses which are also made by them. There are so many things to mention while speaking about the dignities of “Tela”, but we MUST mention their terrace, from which you can see the whole town and the magical view of huge Caucasus Mountains. So, the glass of Georgian wine and a beautiful view... sounds cool, doesn’t it?!

Everyone, who has been in Georgia, usually complain about the weight they’ve gained because of delicious Georgian food which are rich not only by the tastes but also with the calories. You can taste ‘Khachapuri” (cheese in dough) which is often called “cousin of Pizza”, “Khinkali” (uniquely manufactured meat bandaged in boiled dough) and Georgian bread which has a very different taste (nothing like any other bread) and a very different way of making it: Georgians bake it in the earthen pit, center of which is a burning fire, which gives the bread a very interesting taste. And lastly, food prices are surprisingly low in Georgia. For example, you can buy almost all the above mentioned food for two people in 15$ only (there are some really good restaurants on every step of the way). So, Georgia/ Telavi must be a good idea! What do you think?...

???????? Georgia Road Trip Part 15 - Telavi in Kakheti Province (თელავი)

On our way to Tblisi from Sighnaghi, we reached Telavi around noon time. We found a spot to park and walked around. However, the touristic points of attractions were closed - the reason of which we didn't know. We couldn't enter the fort, hence we just drove further into the city. It was time for the local bazaar and we went into it to find some stuff to eat. The fruits were a great hit among us. We were able to find several Georfian Azeris and talked with them in Turkish, that was a great experience. Telavi looked like a peaceful town with decent amount of historical points. Unfortunately, we didn't stay much as we needed to reach Tblisi for the dinner and continue from there on to Kutaisi. Maybe one day, we will come back to spend more time in it. Until then, we have this video for the records (as well the next one on Telavi bazaar exclusively).

Mystical Georgia | Tbilisi, Telavi, Mtskheta, And Ananuri | Travel Vlog

We dedicated some time to exploration of the capital of Georgia - Tbilisi. During the day we visited all the major attractions of the city. We started from the Holy Trinity Cathedral (Sameba) built in 21st c. and being the main Christian Orthodox cathedral in Georgia. We also visited Mtskheta which was the capital of Eastern Georgia in Iberia from 3rd c. BC to 5th c. AD. Historical monuments here: Jvari Monastery of 6th c. and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral of 11th c. - are included in UNESCO World Heritage Sites. We also visited the Prometheus Grotto when we traveled towards Svaneti region. This is a 1200 meters long Karst cave with 5 different shaped halls rich of stalactites, stalagmites, and other Karst figures formed millions of years ago. Tbilisi has many great sections - Narikala Fortress which you can go by cable car. Also, there is Legvtakhevi Fig Ravine which has a scenic waterfall. There's Shardeni street, the neighborhood with Meidan square with lots of outdoor cafes, galleries, and souvenir shops. The National Museum of Georgia on the Rustaveli Avenue was also really amazing! There are many artifacts and rich ethnographic and archaeological collections from Paleolithic era to Middle Ages.

????Hi! We’re Ben and Haley. We sold everything to travel around the world. We left behind our very normal life to travel the world with only a backpack and on a budget. We left the US with no definite plans and decided to go wherever the cheapest flight takes us. We've been on the road full-time since July 2022. Come with us as we explore this beautiful world. We'll be sharing the good and the bad, the wild and the mundane, and all of our best travel tips to help with your own adventures.

Note: We’ve linked a few items to share useful things we travel with. All of these items are the exact things we actually use and currently have in our backpacks right now. If you click on these links and make a purchase, we receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Discover Georgia

Lying across both Europe and Asia, Georgia combines the best of both. Georgia’s scenic beauty draws tourists, but its culture and cuisine are what bring them back. While it’s unclear if Georgians really invented wine as they claim, they have been making wine in buried clay jars for 8,000 years, with hundreds of local varietals. Georgian cuisine has a place of honor throughout Eastern Europe, with its savory meat dumplings, cheese-filled flatbread, and a surprising amount of vegan food, taking advantage of the country’s bounty of walnuts, pomegranates, beans, and eggplant. It has many unique delicacies hard to find elsewhere, such as strings of nuts suspended in thickened grape juice, forming a candy resembling a sausage.

Georgia's location has made it the intersection of empires for millennia. Alexander the Great fortified its mountain passes, as did the Romans and Persians. Georgia was also the destination of Jason and the Argonauts. This long history is clearly visible, from cave cities to ancient churches. Cosmopolitan Tbilisi can be hard to place, with its combination of Turkish baths built alongside a river flowing from hot springs, past Byzantine churches, Soviet modernism, and Art Nouveau. The Old Town, which lies beneath a castle, has its own unique form of architecture, with colorful wooden homes featuring large, carved balconies. With its hospitality culture, low crime, and heavy investment in tourism, what was once Eastern Europe’s best-kept secret is opening itself up to the world.
