We had no idea you could swim in ancient ruins here - a new MUST DO in Italy and definitely one of Italy's best beaches. We visit the picturesque towns of Polignano a Mare and Ostuni. As well as the biblical cave town of Matera. We also sample some of the local food, including a traditional Italian snack of frise, prosecco, and olives! The Roman amphitheater of Lecce is a Roman monument located in the central Piazza Sant'Oronzo.Risale all' ' augustea . The Roman amphitheater, along with the theater , is the most expressive monument of the importance reached by Lupiae , the Roman ancestor of Lecce, between the first and second century AD
. The dating of the monument is still the subject of discussion and oscillates between the Augustan age and the Trajan-Hadrianic age.
The monument was discovered during the construction of the Bank of Italy building , carried out in the early 1900s. The excavation operations to bring to light the remains of the amphitheater began almost immediately, thanks to the will of the Salento archaeologist Cosimo De Giorgi and lasted until 1940.
Currently it is possible to admire only a third of the entire structure, as the rest is still hidden in the basement of Piazza Sant'Oronzo where there are some buildings and the church of Santa Maria della Grazia .
The monument, partly built directly into the rock and partly built on square arches, remains in the open, as well as a part of the elliptical arena, around which the steps of the inferior order develop, two annular corridors, one that it runs under the steps, the other, external, portico, to which belong the numerous and strong pillars, on which the superior order was imposed, as well as other similar monuments, from the Colosseum to the Arena of Verona , in a gallery of fornici .
The arena, where theatrical performances and stage performances by ancient and modern authors are held, was divided from the cavea by a high wall that was adorned with a parapet ( podium ) adorned with marble reliefs in a bauletto depicting scenes of combat between men and animals . Also in the dividing wall between the arena and the cavea several communication passages were opened with the central corridor and a narrower corridor, dug immediately behind the arena, was used for the services of the monument.

[A day in the life...] NOTE project - Event 4 in Taurisano, Italy
NOTE stands for the “Network of Organizations and Towns for the European Elections”. It is an initiative of 12 towns from 10 EU Member States in the framework of the programme CERV. We represent citizens, local governments and civil society organisations from: Italy, Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, Portugal, Croatia, Greece, Spain, Lithuania and Belgium. The project activities are planned for 18 months, from December 2022 to June 2024, aligned with the next European Elections. NOTE will promote the exchange of experience and modus operandi between the partners in the following three ways: 1) bringing information on the role of the Union and its democratic values to local citizens; 2) striving bottom-up social mobilisation for active European citizenship and democratic European Elections to the European Parliament in 2024, and 3) favouring cultural and civic exchange, also on a personal level. Young citizens (18-35 y.o.) of the partnered towns are at the heart of this initiative as they are the ones who made a difference in the European Elections to the European Parliament in 2019. The turnout of young and first time voters in 2019 exceeded any turnout increases registered for other age groups. Recalling this fact was fundamental in defining the goal of NOTE to form a transnational Network of Towns aiming at active citizenship and promotion of informed participation in the 2024 European Elections through and with the young citizens. In practical terms, NOTE will involve the partnered towns and organisations to become enablers in the process of bringing European institutions closer to their citizens: young people will learn to conduct Street Debates and collect ideas and suggestions in a form of podcasts to achieve the objectives set by the EU documents policy papers as well as by the UN Sustainable Development Goals (backlash of women rights, climate, pandemic, migration, humanitarian crises caused by the wars, etc.).

Passeggiando per Specchia - Walking Tour Italy
Specchia costituisce una delle più belle e suggestive cittadine del Salento, con il suo pittoresco centro storico riconosciuto tra i 100 borghi più belli d'Italia. Il nome deriva dal cumulo di pietre a secco utilizzato dai Messapi per le proprie postazioni da difesa e vedetta. Il primo nucleo abitativo risale al IX secolo ed era composto principalmente da contadini e pastori in fuga dalle vicine località costiere spesso soggette a saccheggi e distruzioni da parte dei Saraceni. Nel corso dei secoli Specchia diventa una cittadina fortificata da muretti e torri in pietra costruite intorno al Castello Risolo d'epoca medioevale, con la caratteristica loggata in prossimità della torre merlata. Da visitare il suggestivo centro storico di notevole interesse turistico, completamente chiuso al traffico con numerose scalinate, imponenti palazzi antichi e tante Chiese cristiane. La più grande e la Chiesa Parrocchiale (costruita nel 1608) con dei particolari pilasti realizzati in pietra leccese, il Convento dei Capuccini, edificato nel XVI secolo, la Chiesa di Sant'Eufemia di epoca bizantina, la Chiesa di Sant Antonio, un tempo convento dei frati Domenicani e l'antica Chiesa di San Nicola (del X secolo). Da vedere anche il Frantoio ipogeo, recentemente restaurato con estrema cura, una struttura architettonica presente anche in altri paesi limitrofi (Taurisano, Ugento, Tricase e Presicce) che dimostra l'importanza storica nel Salento della produzione dell'olio extravergine di oliva. Nelle vicinanze di Specchia, a circa 3 km in direzione Ruffano, nei pressi di una ricca riserva naturale, troviamo l'incantevole Masseria-Residence di Borgo Cardigliano, ubicato in un ex villaggio agricolo (tabacchificio) completamente ristrutturato e trasformato in una delle strutture ricettive più esclusive del Salento.
