Frog Hill in Penang may be one of the most photographed places in the Mainland of the state, Seberang Perai. The speciality of this place is the many shimmering water pools set in a former quarry site. It’s a delight for photographers to come here and shoot at sunrise or sunset but you can come here to enjoy the views pretty much at any time of the day.
This post focuses on Frog Hill, how to reach it, and how to visit one of Penang’s most popular natural attractions on the mainland at Seberang Perai. Frog Hill is a former mining site filled with water that became famous on Instagram when locals started calling it “the Jiuzhaigou of Penang”.
Frog Hill Penang is definitely interesting and beautiful, but I would be wary of comparing it to one of Western China’s most striking sights. A hike to Frog Hill, however, is perfect for beginners, friends and couples looking for a scenic and quiet place to go on a date or a picnic.
To be precise, Frog Hill is more of a sightseeing spot than one “hiking spot” such as Penang Hill and Bukit Hijau on the island, or the many hiking trails in Penang Mainland, such as nearby Bukit Juru, Cherok Tok Kun, Berapit and Bukit Panchor, for example. And if you are looking for a diminutive island, don’t miss Pulau Aman and nearby Batu Kawan.
Rumors report that Frog Hill may soon be closed to continue the mining operations, so make a visit here a priority when you happen to be in Penang’s mainland because it may not be open for much longer. We really hope it won’t be the case, though.

We went on a weekday in the morning — the place tends to get crowded with local tourists on weekends — and arrived around 10 am when the weather was still perfect to enjoy the views and see the ponds shine in blue hues.

天未破晓，酒店大厅播着充满欢庆气息的马来歌谣，一切还在沉睡中。我穿过大厅，瞧见一个老人的背影，坐在大厅前走廊边，往前绕过他，用马来话跟他打招呼：“Selamat pagi, Pak Cik.”
他抬头看我，笑着说：“Selamat pagi.”
他大腿上坐着一个约5岁的小女孩，小女孩睡眼惺忪，手上抱着洋娃娃。
Pak Cik说，孙女有华人血统，他的媳妇是华人，这次回来过年，等下就回去吉隆坡了。
Pak cik问我们，从哪里来，去了哪里？我们边聊着边绑行李。
没过多久，一辆车子驶过前廊，停在Pak cik面前，女孩的妈妈下车把女孩接走，女孩爸爸把Pak cik身旁的行囊接走，寒暄一阵，上车走了。老人家站着目送渐行渐远的车尾灯，一种落寞的氛围围绕着他，让他的侧影顿然沉重了许多。
我们的行李准备就绪，发动车子，咆哮声划破浓稠的黑暗。我回头向Pak cik挥了挥手，他也挥了手，祝我们回程平安。前廊微弱的灯光下，他早前抱着孙女乐开怀的表情已褪去，仅留下落寞的空洞眼神。

早晨六点钟，在路上。
来自田野的风迎面吹送，带着青草香气、饱含湿润的水汽，直到有一只不明的小虫扑上我的脸颊，我才心不甘情不愿的盖上面罩。
我们骑过一片又一片的田野，一盏又一盏的路灯接力的，把我们的身影拖曳在路上。
后来上了南北大道，大道边依旧是稻田笼罩，东边开始露出曙光，第一道光在稻田上凝聚的雾气间晕开来，像水彩画第一个落笔的笔触，那光圈逐渐扩散，到了某个临界点，那光倒成了强势的存在，黑暗节节败下阵来。
看着天空逐渐被光所统御，那一点一滴的过程，总让我不知不觉的被疗愈了，尽管我心中没什么坎，却也觉得逐渐被赋予了希望和力量--关于未来，关于没敢奢望的梦想......
最近在阅读龙应台的《走路--独处的实践》。走路，让自己免于网路世界纷纷扰扰的干扰，让自己静下来，在脚步与脚步之间，静观自己的呼与吸，静听自己最深沉的心事。
其实，单独骑车本身与单独走路，有异曲同工之妙，只是骑车的速度要快一点，所有风景一晃而过。然而，那过程中，仿佛一幕一幕的风景线，成了连续摊开来的卷轴画，源源不绝。

我尾随着师父的背影，时远时近，离开南北大道后，路越走越荒凉，偶尔还是看到成片的稻田，几只白鹭鸶点缀其中。
后来，我们来到一处不甚起眼的地方，周围矗立着几座工厂，骑过工厂旁，开始出现红泥路。前一天看来是下了一场雨，红泥路变成了红泥水池，我们必须看准较浅的积水，小心翼翼的涉水而过，避免打滑，否则后果就是全身泥泞。
（当下时间早晨8点钟，今天的行程才刚刚开始，最后的目的地是怡保，我才不想此刻就把自己搞得灰头土脸的。）
前方红泥路继续延伸，我仍看不到尽头，却被一头水牛吸引，打算稍作停留。河的对岸，水牛背对着我，在灌木丛下歇息，偶尔转头盯着我，估计我是没办法跨过河面，于是继续悠闲的躺着。
骑到红石堆叠的地方，正是青蛙坡（Frog Hill）在谷歌地图上的标记点，把车停好，迫不及待的往高处爬。
那真的是被大自然力量统御的地方，放眼望去尽是红土红石，青翠的植被攀附在石头上，那青依附在红褐色的石头上，在初昇的旭阳照耀下，那绿那红碰撞出来的色彩，让人屏息惊叹！
爬上高原顶端，眺望远处的湖水，靛色的湖水边，圈绕着一抹翠绿，旭阳投在湖面上，天上彩带一般的云，也一倂抹上了水面。
四周鸟叫虫鸣声不绝于耳，风轻轻的吹拂着，早晨的凉意吹着耳根。远处山峦起伏，隔着雾气，变得飘渺不真实。
9点后，太阳开始发威，穿着外套的我开始感受到闷热，心中却是满满的感动--尽管路途再怎么坎坷，看到让人震撼的风景，一切都值得了！(这里可以继续写鸡汤文2千字，估计没人想看，所以省略......)

How to get there?
???? Google Maps coordinates to the entrance - 5.442677, 100.473271

???????? Once you have turned into the entrance using the coordinates, keep going straight along the path until you see a small factory on your left. I would suggest to leave your car here if you love it. The road moving forward is muddy, filled with potholes, tree branches on all 3 sides, right, left and above in some areas. No problem for a fwd vehicle though. 20 mins walk / 5 minutes by bike from here.
???????? Go straight until you pass a red brick factory on your left. Continue going straight along the narrower road until you reach another fork (right path going downhill, left path going uphill), take left and continue until the foothill. From the foothill, its only another 10 mins hike to the top of the hill.
Notable Mentions
⚠️ Despite its beauty, Froghill was previously a quarry. Please do not bathe in the pools for obvious reasons.
⚠️ Not suitable for elders and kids without close supervision. There are unprotected cliffs overlooking the pools. Needless to say, caution is recommended for everyone.
⚠️ There are no shades on top of the hill. Bring adequate protection and water if you are sensitive to heat.
⚠️ To get a good picture, please visit when the sky is clear and the sun is highest, this will bring out the colours of pools.
