Melbourne, Australia ???????? - The Most Livable City in the World? | Victoria, Australia Travel Guide

I travel to Melbourne, Australia in the state of Victoria to find out how Melbourne was voted one of the most livable cities in the world throughout the 2010s till present day. Melbourne is always in competition with Sydney as the best city in Australia. I explore the city by train and on foot to see all the sights and sounds of the city, as well as it's surrounding neighborhoods.

MOST POPULAR MELBOURNE IS A GOOD PLACE TO VISIT

10 BEST ATTRACTIONS OF MELBOURNE
Affectionately called Marvellous Melbourne during the gold rush of the 1850s, the name is still used today for Australia's second largest city. Located on the banks of the Yarra River, near the entrance to Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne is a modern metropolis steeped in history. Melbourne is a city for all seasons. From wandering the hidden laneways and grand tree-lined streets to the acres of city gardens and parklands surrounding the CBD, Melbourne is vibrant, elegant, and multicultural. So let’s have a small visit of it.
• Yarra River Cruise
A river boat cruise is not only the perfect way to see the sights, it's also an insight into the history of the Yarra River. Many cruise companies can be found along Southbank and take in places such as Birrarung Marr, originally called Birrarung meaning river of mists and shadows, a parkland celebrating the Aboriginal ties with the Yarra River. Another popular cruise goes across to historic Williamstown where visitors can spend time exploring this quaint seaside port.
•  Docklands
Docklands is Melbourne's newest precinct. With the highest concentration of green-star rated buildings in the southern hemisphere, the waterfront satellite village is filled with cafés, restaurants, and parklands. The view from the giant observation wheel, The Melbourne Star is spectacular, and the area also houses Etihad Stadium and the Icehouse, a world-class ice sports venue. There is also an art and vintage market held along the waterfront every Sunday.
• Queen Victoria Market
A popular place with locals and tourists, this historic icon has been at the centre of fresh produce shopping since 1878. In addition to the magnificent food halls, market stalls sell everything from clothing, art, and toys to that hard-to-find unique souvenir, five days a week. Tours are available, and special events such as night markets, music concerts, and other functions are often held during summer.
•  Melbourne Zoo
Although the 22 hectares of Melbourne Zoo dates back to 1862, the 320 species of animals have the best of modern facilities in state-of-the-art enclosures. The award-winning Trail of the Elephants is an insight into the lives of the resident Asian elephants in a traditional village-garden setting. Another highlight is the Orang-utan Sanctuary where the animals live in their treetop home. With many wild encounters including roar and snore, twilight music concerts, and behind-the-scene tours of some enclosures, Melbourne Zoo offers visitors many innovative experiences.
•  Melbourne Museum and Royal Exhibition Building
A short tram ride from the CBD, the Melbourne Museum is surrounded by beautiful gardens and parkland. This modern purpose-built museum houses a diverse collection depicting society and cultures. Highlights include the Aboriginal Centre, Bunjilaka, the children's museum, and The Blue Box a cube protruding off the side of the building. The gallery is a series of hands-on activities designed to stimulate and engage children. Adjacent to the Melbourne Museum is the elaborate Royal Exhibition Building. Built in 1880 to host Melbourne's International Exhibition, the building also held the first Commonwealth Parliament of Australia in 1901. Regular tours are available and the building is still used for exhibitions and special events.
•  Arcades and Laneways
Wandering the labyrinth of lane and alleyways around Flinders, Collins, and Bourke Streets is elegant, interesting, and quirky Melbourne at its best. The jewel in the crown is the magnificent Block Arcade in Collins Street. With its mosaic floor, period details, and unique shops, this is the place where late 19th-century gentry promenaded, coining the phrase, doing the block. It's worth queuing for a morning or afternoon tea at the Hopetoun Tearooms. This Melbourne icon dates back to 1892 and is the only original shop still in the arcade today. The opulent Royal Arcade is Melbourne's oldest arcade and Flinders and Degraves Lanes are also well worth exploring. Several companies run guided walking tours of the lanes and alleyways.

Travelling on every type of V/Line train in ONE DAY! Long-distance rail travel in Victoria

I'm now in Melbourne, Victoria. In the past 12 months, I reviewed regional trains in Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia, I have also travelled on Journey Beyond's luxury trains, namely the Ghan, Indian Pacific and Great Southern.
However, I didn't get to pay much attention to V/Line services here in Australia. Therefore, after a few hours of planning in front of my laptop, today I've come up with an idea of travelling on every type of passenger train in the current V/Line fleet in one day!

As of 4 May 2022, V/Line passenger train fleet include:
Broad gauge VLocity (3VL0–3VL28, 3VL30–3VL75, 3VR76–3VR79, 3VL80–3VL92)
Standard gauge VLocity (3VS93–3VS94)
Broad gauge Sprinter
Broad gauge N set
Standard gauge N set
Broad gauge H set
Z type carriage (incorporated into the N sets)*

My plan for this challenge is to catch 8 trains:
5:13am - 5:58am Melbourne - Bacchus Marsh (Broad VLocity)
6:19am - 7:14am Bacchus Marsh - Melbourne (Broad H set)
7:46am - 8:45am Melbourne - Geelong (Broad N set, First Class)
9:30am - 10:35am Geelong - Melbourne (Broad VLocity)
1:36pm - 2:59pm Melbourne - Seymour (Broad Sprinter)
3:09pm - 4:40pm Seymour - Melbourne (Standard N set, Economy Class)
5:33pm - 7:11pm Melbourne - Seymour (Broad Sprinter)
7:44pm - 9:45pm Seymour - Melbourne (Standard VLocity)

I'll start my day at4:30am, if everything goes smoothly, I'll be able to finish my day by10:00pm. How did I go? You can find out in this video!!

Skyhigh Lookout Overlooking Melbourne City Australia

During the peak of Covid lockdowns in Melbourne Australia, where most people were working from home, and almost nobody was working in the city, I took a ride up to the Skyhigh Lookout in the Dandenong Ranges, which is one of Melbourne most popular tourist attractions, with amazing views over the Melbourne skyline.

I have been coming up to Skyhigh Lookout every year for the last 30 years, and I have never seen the air so clear over the city, normally the pollution created by all the cars, prevents you from getting a good view of the city skyline, it’s usually very hazy.

Now to give you an idea of distance, Skyhigh Lookout is 50 klms or 31 miles from the city, but on this perfect blue sky summer day, the air was amazingly clear, and I was treated to the best views I have ever seen in 30 years, of the Melbourne city skyline and the surrounding area.

Most people come up to Skyhigh Lookout to eat at the cafe and look out over the city, or to go for a walk down one of the forest trails.

Myself? I simply come up for the amazing view.

Thanks for watching.
