World war 2 Battle of Tarawa: how the battlefield looks today! (Pacific war tour in Kiribati)

Discovering the historical battle site of Tarawa, Betio island, in Kiribati. In this tropical
paradise in November 1943 the US for the first time in the war went on a full frontal attack on heavily fortified beaches. The second Marines suffered enormous losses as the majority of the landing crafts got stuck on the reef and the soldiers had to wade in the water unprotected, towards Japanese machine gun fire. Three days later the small island and the Tarawa atoll was liberated but the beaches and waters were covered in blood.

Especially on the outer islands you'll find traditional culture is still very much alive. The Kiribati people are generally friendly and welcoming to visitors, and will include you in their celebrations if you happen to be around.

Visit Kiribati

On our trip around the world we wanted to go a little off the tourist trail and found our way to Tarawa, Kiribati. You can find Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands quite North from New Zealand above the Equator.

We had two weeks in Kiribati, and it was an experience. The islands are not ready for tourists but still make an effort welcoming travellers in. The last two nights we spent at Tepon Te Keekee Ecolodge. It was gorgeous. After crossing the channel with the ferry man we walk to a totally deserted resort with no one home. We continued snooping until we found an overwater bungalo with 2 chairs, a bed and a mosquito net and I assumed that it was our new home. Later in the day we found someone in the kitchen and decided to have lunch. They made battered fish, and fish curry served with fresh vegetables which are hard to come by in these islands! Continueing into the evening someone eventually asks us if we are staying there... we say yes... and then i assumed that was our 'Checking in'.

When in Tarawa we stayed at a place called Dreamers with Richard and Beta. They definitely became our home and really make you feel like you are part of their family while staying there.

COPRA FACTORY
The only significant industry in Kiribati making products for export is copra – that is processing the flesh of coconuts. People across many of the outlying islands of Kiribati make their living by collecting coconuts which grow naturally; the flesh is then sun-dried and sent to the factory in Betio for processing.
HIGHEST POINT ON TARAWA
One of the most famous sites on South Tarawa is the highest point on the atoll. You’re unlikely to need hiking boots or suffer from altitude sickness since it’s only 3 metres above sea level.
Taiwan Park
Taiwan park is most popular in Kiribati.
KIRIBATI PARLIAMENT
Kiribati is a huge country covering an area roughly the size of India – except that most of it is open ocean. Three times a year, the elected representatives from all over the country make the long journey to Tarawa to meet in the parliament building which is built on an artificial island
DRINK LIKE A LOCAL
Making use of limited natural resources is important in Kiribati, and one way people do this is by making a small cut in a branch of a palm tree and hanging a bottle underneath so that the tree sap runs down into the bottle. The resulting liquid has various uses, including being fermented to make a form of palm wine known as karewe. This lightly alcoholic drink isn’t really legal to sell so you do typically need a local contact to get hold of some, besides a strong stomach!

Overpopulation & Pollution on Tarawa | Kiribati

Tarawa is beautiful but has it's share of issues: The top two being one of the most densely places in the world and overpopulation & horrific realities of trash and pollution.
