Four Days in Peru's Amazon Jungle

Piranha fishing. Pink dolphin spotting. Dancing with local tribe members. A trip to Peru's Amazon jungle has it all! We knew we wanted to experience the world's biggest rainforest when we went to Peru, but figuring out where to go, what to do and how long to stay there can be overwhelming. So we've got you covered! Here's a look at our itinerary for four days and three nights outside of Iquitos, Peru.

Some quick tips:
-We highly recommend Maniti Expeditions! We loved our guide Alfredo and had a great experience overall.
-Stay for at least two but preferably three nights. It takes a while to get there, so one night isn't enough. But it is rustic, so unless you're used to roughing it, more than three nights might start to wear on you.
-Most tour companies provide rain boots, but they may not be in great shape. So bring plenty of extra socks or your own boots if you can.
-Other waterproof gear, such as ponchos and backpack covers, will come in handy.
-Bring a headlamp for night hikes!
-The bugs are no joke. Get your recommended vaccinations, bring plenty of bug spray and wear long clothes despite the heat.
-Bring cash to buy drinks and to tip your guide and staff.
-Don't drink the water, even to brush your teeth. And bring Imodium just in case some slips in!

AMAZON RAINFOREST | Tambopata National Reserve | Amazon Rainforest Peru

We recently returned from Tambopata Reserve in Peru - Puerto Maldonado where we spent an epic week in The Amazon Rainforest!

We stayed at the Monte Amazonico Lodge which is situated on the Tambopata River, and booked our guide through Carlos Expeditions.

We managed to do quite a few amazing Amazon Rainforest activities including Kayaking in Alligator infested waters, feeding Piranhas in Sandoval lake and Zip lining across the rainforest canopy … and of course, plenty of jungle trekking and spotting all the different animals in the Amazon rainforest.

We were lucky enough to have encounters with white caiman, black caiman, howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, tarantulas, parrots and so many more!

We also heard about an animal shelter Tambopata, called the Amazon shelter where we volunteered and spent our time feeding and learning about different species of wildlife in the Amazon rainforest that had been rescued from hunting and the illegal wildlife trade. Most of these animals are rehabilitated and released back into the wild
The Amazon Shelter relies solely on donations and volunteers, for more information or to make a kind donation check out their website

Since returning to the UK from Peru, we have recently taken a trip up to Scotland where we hiked and wild camped The Rob Roy Way! If you haven’t seen the videos yet.. check them out on my channel - Drunk On Wanderlust
We can’t wait to head back up and Wild camp Scotland again, we are trying to decide on our next trail up there? Maybe the Fife coastal path?

We are currently in Corfu about to hike the Corfu trail so keep tuned in each week to follow our hiking and wild camping adventures

Tambopata: TRC Peruvian Rainforest - macaw, jungle, ayahuasca. The greatest trip of all time.

It's hard to define the greatest trip of all time for someone who really loves to travel, but for me, this trip to the Tambopata Research Center deep in the Peruvian rainforest, defined travel for me on a new level.

For most of my life traveling was about going somewhere to experience something new and relating it to something I was familiar with. How another country's food was different than mine, how their music was unique, how their language sounded strange and wonderful. Here though, travel took on a new meaning; it went far beyond difference, and transcended a new experience. In short, it was the journey that was the trip, and when I arrived, it was no longer a place, but a perspective I found. It is something I measure all travel against now, and for better or worse, haunts my travel dreams.

The Tambopata Research Center is not easy to get to, and that truly is what makes it magic. It is a three day journey down a cocoa river that is both extremely dangerous and serene. Here is a passage from the article I wrote for Get Lost Magazine: Tambopata Research Center is located in a region of south-eastern Peru known as Madre de Dios or Mother of God. Tens of thousands of plant and animal species, from macaws and monkeys to jaguars and giant turtles, thrive in this protected tangle of forest. The wildlife is so prolific that while I’m here my guides discover two new species of spiders – and that’s just on the walk from the boat to the lodge. Visiting this jungle is like stepping into God’s messy kitchen.

The lodge itself seemed to be made from my wildest dreams. Absolutely remote, both romantic and rustic, with an open air bar and cheap drinks, you are surrounded by a handful of adventure tourists and scientists. Over cold Cusquena beer you make new brilliant friends, and if lucky enough they take you out at night on one of their research missions, where you see nature like never before; raw, frightening, and awe inspiring. During the hot part of the day you may swing in the hammock in your three walled room as you update your journal feeling very much like the men and women that inspired you decades ago when canvas, pith helmets and lust for wonton adventure was in style. There, alone in the heaving jungle, as the howling monkey howl and your sweat and air mingle, you realize that you are no longer traveling, you are experiencing another world on earth, without tourism, without instagram, without any need to share it with anyone. It's the closest I have ever felt to what some people consider God, and it has never left me.

I wrote an article about it, and took a series of photographs that are some of my absolute favorite ( This film however, is different than most of the ones I produce. It is just the natural sounds I found there, and the rare moments I remembered to be filming what I saw. It is a fractured look at this magical, remote place, but it brings me back there immediately in a supernatural way. I hope you enjoy it, and moreso, I hope you find your TRC.

Exploring Peru's Amazon Rainforest: 4 Days in the Amazon Jungle

We spent 4 days exploring Peru's Amazon rainforest! During our two week trip to Peru, we traveled to the remote Amazon jungle to experience one of the most bio-diverse ecosystems on Earth. It was an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience. Our lodge was located deep within the Tambopata Nature Reserve so we had the best chances of seeing the rainforest's wildlife. We saw capybara, caiman, monkeys, spiders, bullet ants, macaws, a boa, and much more!
