Part 1 | Togo is not just about Lome | Quick Tour of Atakpame, the city of 7 hills | The market
Atakpamé is the fifth largest city in Togo by population (84,979 inhabitants in 2006), located in the Plateaux Region of Togo. It is an industrial centre and lies on the main north-south highway, 161 km north of the capital Lomé. It is also a regional commercial centre for produce and cloth.
Atakpamé dates from the 19th century and was first settled by Ewe and Yoruba peoples. It developed as both a commercial centre on a major north-south caravan route and as a haven for refugees fleeing from Dahomean attacks. As a consequence, Atakpamé experienced numerous destructive assaults by the kingdom of Dahomey. It is the centre of an important cotton-growing area and trades in both cocoa and coffee.

The vision for the new administrative and financial district, Lome 2, is to create an urban hub, of international class in the Togolese capital, Lomé.
The 1000 hectare site, once developed, will integrate, in a harmonious mix, the functions of administrative and business offices, hotels, shopping, residences, technological park and cultural, sports and leisure facilities.
The international standards targeted will propel Togo as a major player in the world economy by positioning its capital, Lomé, as a model of Smart city in Africa, and in the world.
It will offer local stakeholders and investors, structured around ecological green spaces and landscaped gardens:

Kpalimé, Château Vial
Château Vial (1941-1944 )
Il est situé sur le plateau de Kouma à environ 17 km de Kpalimé. Cest un prestigieux château construit en pleine forêt à 705m daltitude.
Le château fut renové à deux reprises par le président de la républque du TOGO dalors, EYADEMA GNASSINGBE. Réhabilité en 1982, le Château est aujourd'hui un lieu de tourisme qui mérite le détour. L'histoire de cette bâtisse remonte à la période de la deuxième guerre mondiale et elle est décrite comme ci-dessous.
Vial fut un allemand venu rendre visite à son père, alors infirmier. Vial trouva le site assez bien situé, décida alors dy construire un Château. C'est ainsi que naquit le Château Vial.
Il faut dire quà lorigine, aucune route ne conduisait au site élu. Vial découvrit le site lors dune randonnée à cheval, et naturellement cest à cheval que le site fut bâtit.
Tous les matériaux (essentiellement composés de pierres) qui ont servi à la construction de lédifice étaient acheminés à pied par les indigènes depuis la localité de Kpélé Adéta, à une vingtaine de kilomètre au nord de Kpalimé. Cest vous dire la nature de la corvée effectuée par les indigènes dans la construction de cette merveille.
Quant au ciment, importé dEurope, il était convoyé en bateau puis en train depuis Lomé jusquà Kpalimé. Vous devinez alors aisément comment le reste du trajet était effectué.
