What to See and Do in Taif, Saudi Arabia: Cable Car, Toboggan, Souk, Dates, Arruddaf Park & Baboons
In this video of Living the Jo life, we visit Taif, Saudi Arabia’s Summer Capital, named so due to its high elevation and lower temperatures. We caught the Al Hada Cable Car, also called the Telefric, which drops from about 1965 m above sea level now to 880 m elevation over a 4 km stretch and leads to the Al Kar Tourist Village, where you will find a water park and activities such as a toboggan ride. We went for an afternoon drive to Jabal Dakka in the Ash Shafa area, which is located at over 2,500 m elevation and is surrounded my green vegetation and beautiful mountainous views. At the top of the mountain, we stopped for a coffee break at the “House of Roses Resort”, where we enjoyed the cool temperatures and gorgeous views from their terrace. After checking in at our hotel, we went into Taif city, where we took in the magical atmosphere of the Gazzaz Souk. After enjoying some dates and some Arabic coffee at a lovely café, we came across some Saudi National Day celebrations. The celebrations certainly continued at Arruddaf Park, which is a lively park with entertainment, music, performances, markets, food stalls and much more. We had a fantastic time in Taif, and we can highly recommend a weekend away to Saudi Arabia’s summer capital to escape the heat and have a fun time.

Foreigners visiting the holy city of Mecca and the mountains around Taif. Saudi Arabia is so awesome
In this new episode of our roadtrip in Saudi Arabia, we leave Jeddah after spending almost two days there. We leave early in the morning for a 386 kilometers journey towards the city of Al-Bahah located in the heart of the Saudi mountains.
This journey will take us from red sea level to an altitude of 2500 meters, from a warm to a temperate climate.
On the way, we will pass right next to the holy city of Mecca without entering it.
As we are not Muslims, we could not visit the city of Mecca. There are traffic lanes reserved for Muslims, pilgrims and non-Muslims who must imperatively bypass the city.
However, we were able to see the Clock Tower which is located a few meters from the Ka'aba, the holiest place in Islam. We also came across some of Islam's holy places, including Mount Arafat, where Mohammad is said to have given his farewell speech to the Muslims.
Just outside Mecca, we passed through the beautiful mountainous region of al-Hada.
The winding road leading to the resort is majestic and worth the detour on its own.
Among the memorable memories of the mountainous regions of Arabia, the presence of large herds of baboons caught our attention. Many of them roamed the valleys around the roads, looking for food.
Located at an altitude of 1900 meters, the city of Taïf is known for its pleasant climate. With its 1.2 million inhabitants, Ta'if is the 5th largest city in the country.
We took advantage of our visit to do some shopping including the purchase of the traditional jelaba. In a restaurant, the owner invited us into the kitchens where we cooked some meat and took some pictures with the staff.
We also went to Jabal Dakka, which is located 20 km from the city of Ta'if.
The mountain is used to find out the dates of prayer, fasting and breakfast in the month of Ramadan.
In winter, the temperature at the summit is below 0°C. As you can see in this video, winds can rise making the visit more difficult than expected.
We conclude the video with our arrival in the city of Al Baha.

As promised, here is my review/story of our trip from Riyadh to Taif.
Taif is a city and governorate in the Makkah Province of Saudi Arabia. Located at an elevation of 1,879 m (6,165 ft) in the slopes of the Hejaz Mountains, which themselves are part of the Sarawat Mountains,[1] the city has a 2020 estimated population of 688,693 people, making it the 6th most populous city in the kingdom.
The city has been called the unofficial summer capital of Saudi Arabia[5][6] and has also been called the best summer destination in Saudi Arabia[7] as it enjoys a moderate weather during summer, unlike most of the Arabian Peninsula. The city owes its popularity among tourists to its many mountain resorts and moderate climate, even during the harsh summers of Arabia. The city is connected to the nearby resort town of al-Hada via the iconic Highway 15 (Ta'if–al-Hada Road). It stands out from the rest of the Hejaz region as it is a city that plays an active role in the agricultural output of Saudi Arabia and is the center of an agricultural area known for its cultivation of grapes, pomegranate, figs, roses and honey.[8] Ta'if is also very active in the manufacturing of traditional 'Ittar, and is known locally as the City of Roses (Arabic: مدينة الورود, romanized: Madinat al-Wurud). Ta'if also hosts the historic Souq 'Okaz
Before leaving home, I made sure we had snacks, sanitizers, disinfectant sprays, sanitizing wipes, extra masks, towels, our own bedsheets, hand soaps, toiletries, our own kettle, cups, glasses, plates. I did not want to use any of these stuffs from other places. I suggest you do the same if you are traveling during these times and want to take precautions as much as you can.
Coming back to the story ????
We left Riyadh at around 6 am and reached Taif around 12.30 pm. The drive is almost 6 to 7 hours, depending on how many stops you make.
We didn’t make any stop as kids slept throughout the drive.
Our booking was in a different resort but we didn’t like the location of our rooms so we booked Al ward Heritage village in Al Shafa, this is also a part of Taif city.

It was our second time in the same resort and it was great. The villas were clean, tidy and the best part about this resort is that it is not in between other resorts. It’s a separate resort, although not very lush and expensive, very reasonable.
The worst part about this resort was that it had no WIFI. Apart from that, there was nothing bad, and we loved our stay. Rooms were super clean, everything was working fine. Kids playarea was nice and pool was amazing.
We stayed for an hour in our villa and left for Jabal Dakka.
Jabal means mountain, Jabal Dhaka, is the highest mountain in the area of the town of Ash-Shafā (Arabic: ٱلشَّفَا, lit. 'The Cure'),[1] about 20 km (12 mi) from the city of Taif, located in the western region of Saudi Arabia.[2]
The height of the top of the mountain is between 2,500 and 2,900 metres (8,200 and 9,500 feet) above sea level, this has caused a controversy with the timing of the sunset for Ramadan, as the sun stays on the peak two minutes longer than the surrounding area. To resolve the controversy a panel of religious scholars visited the mountain to observe sunset.[3] The committee of legitimacy, including a member of the Supreme Council of Saudi Scholars Abdullah al-Mutlaq determined that the peak need not adhere to calendar.
The mountain is located 20 kilometres (12 miles) south-west of Taif. It overlooks the Shifa tourist center. The mountain is used to know the dates of prayer, fasting and breakfast in the month of Ramadan. The vegetation of the mountain is covered with juniper trees, the plant covers the bottom of the mountain and then gradually thins out until it reaches the top. The temperature of the top reaches below 0 °C (32 °F) in the winter. The mountain has a tourist resort just 7 km (4.3 mi) away from the Shifa.[4]
It’s a nice place to visit as the views are amazing. A must visit if you are in Taif.
We left Jabal Dakka and we came across Miraj restaurant. You can check the reviews and location here.
Although its not a very fancy restaurant, but the food was reasonably good and charges were not too much high. The service was quick but it is not a lavish restaurant. I sanitized the table and made sure I took all the precautions. They have a lot of Indian dishes and their best thing was their yummy garlic butter naans. You should try these.
We left the restaurant and went back to our resort and had a long sleep.
Next morning we left the resort. It was a very nice stay. Except the WIFI issue, everything was good. Kids enjoyed a lot.

1- SOUK OKAZ:
Souk Okaz was an ancient and famous open-air market in pre-Islamic times in the city of Taif. It is located on the outskirts of Taif city. you should consider this place on your taif city tour. It was a seasonal market that operated for two weeks each year during the month of Dhu al-Qi'dah. The intellectuals and people concerned with literature and culture gathered and displayed their art in the remote ancient past. It was a multidisciplinary festival having religious, educational, and political gatherings, sports, trading, and entertainment. People used to travel long distances just to participate in this famous festival. Now the Taif government has put in efforts to revive this festivity again at the same location and under the same label.

2- Masjid Al Madhoun:
Qantara Mosque is also known as Al-Madhoun Mosque and it is a small Masjid that is located in Taif and was built around 162 years ago during the Ottoman era, the design of the mosque was inspired by Abbasid architecture. It is a famous taif ziyarat. The mosque has retained its old-fashioned structure even on the inside and has a very distinctive minaret that is unlike any other. People can climb up the minaret and view the fields, hilly slopes, and mountains. On the opposite side of the mosque is a farm where Prophet Muhammad rested after he was expelled from Taif. On that farm, the Prophet was then offered fruit by a grape farmer who was a Christian and later converted to Islam. This mosque is also known by some pilgrims as masjid Ali Bin Abi Talib but locals claim that there is no proven relationship of this mosque with Sayadina Ali Bin Ibi Talib in Islamic literature.

I am in Ta'if (not Madinah)!
Even though the official Saudi Arabia tourist visa web site states that tourists are allowed to visit Madinah (except for entering the holy Mosque), the bus operator refused to sell me a ticket to Madinah. As a result, I had to quickly come up with a new plan at the bus station, and I decided to buy a ticket to Ta'if instead (اَلطَّائِفُ).
Sometimes unforeseen circumstances can be a blessing in disguise, because I ended up having a wonderful time in Ta'if. It is a medium-size town of around 600,000 people, and is almost at an altitude of 2000 meters in the breathtaking Sarawat mountain range.

Taif (pronounced Taayef, also written Ta'if) is a city in western Saudi Arabia. It is in the Hejaz mountains near Mecca and served as a summer retreat for the royals and commoners from neighboring areas. The city is the center of an agricultural area known for its grapes, pomegranate, figs, roses, and honey.
It takes an average travel time of 1h 3mins to travel from Jeddah to Taif, given the average speed of 181km/h and the distance of 190.12 km (118 miles)
