Java is one of Indonesia’s most diverse and beautiful islands. In this travel video, I show you 10 of my favorite places to visit. From surreal mountain landscapes and volcanoes to bustling cities, from tranquil fishing villages to historic temples set among green lush rice fields.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video (which can be used as a travel guide):
We begin this journey in Jakarta, the nation’s capital, and one of Asia’s largest cities. The city can feel overwhelming at first sight, but there are some great areas to visit, including museums, historic neighborhoods, and modern shopping malls.
After Jakarta, we travel to Yogyakarta, the cultural heartland of Java. It’s a much more relaxed place to walk around, and provides a more traditional perspective of Indonesia, with music performances (gamelan songs) and shadow puppet theatre. I also visit local farmers in the countryside around the city. Most are growing rice in green paddy fields, and are happy to show you around.
Around Yogyakarta you will find two of Indonesia’s most stunning temples. Borobudur is a Buddhist temple, and easily one of the most impressive historic structures in Asia. Prambanan is of Hindu origin, and its architecture is very different from Borobudur.
Mount Bromo is arguably one of Indonesia’s most famous volcanoes, and it’s actually possible to get up on the ridge, to get a peek into its crater. The next destination is Pangandaran, a peaceful seaside town with some beautiful beaches and powerful waves, and a popular holiday destination.
Semarang is a busy city with some beautiful historic architecture, including the church which was built in Dutch colonial times. The Christian minority still uses this church. After Semarang, we travel to Kawah Ijen, a surreal volcanic crater where miners are collecting blocks of sulfur. In some moments, this place felt apocalyptic.
In the fishing port of Banyuwangi (also the gateway to Bali) you will find some spectacular fishing boats, with bright colors and classic design. The town’s atmosphere is friendly, and it’s nice to walk around visiting some of the markets. The region around Banyuwangi is well suited for agriculture, and is used for cacao, rubber, and coffee production.
In the lush green mountains around Wonosobo, you will find some beautiful tea plantations, that are open to visit. We finish the journey in Surabaya, an important business and trading hub in Indonesia. It might not boast a lot of ‘tourist attractions’, but it’s a nice place to visit. The main mosque is a highlight, where the local Muslim population comes to pray. It provides an interesting view into the main religion in Indonesia, Islam. On Fridays, this area turns into an ‘open air restaurant’, with street food sellers offering their finest dishes.

SURAKARTA or SOLO in Java, Indonesia is considered one of the centres of Javanese culture and it has a thriving FOOD CULTURE. We take you on an INDONESIAN STREET FOOD tour of some of Solo’s popular local spots- we eat some of Solo’s most famous dishes! We start the day with serabi- a sweet treat made from rice flour and coconut milk. At Mrs Lidya’s Serabi Notosuman dozens of small pans are set up in which to make this popular snack. Serabi are sold in packs of ten and you can opt for the original or chocolate variety. The chocolate come sprinkled with chocolate sprinkles which melt into the gooey coconut centre. Delicate and crispy on the outer edges and warm, thick and gluggy on the inside- serabi are a must eat if you have a sweet tooth!
Our next stop is for one of Indonesia’s most popular meals or snacks- bakso! Bakso or meatballs are usually served in a soup together with noodles, some vegetables and fried shallots. The beef meatballs are springy and slightly chewy and its said that bakso Solo has bigger meatballs than ones you might find elsewhere.
We then head to a quirky restaurant which offers selat Solo a dish unique to Solo and made up of beef steak and vegetables in a sweet gravy. It’s a classic fusion dish with Javanese and European influences.
In the evening vendors who sell sate, fried noodles and fried rice start plying their trade. We eat smoky chicken sate at Sate Ayam Pak Banjir Kampung Baru where a simple grill is set up right on the footpath and swathes of smoke stream onto the road. We follow the sate up with Javanese fried noodles and fried rice from President Jokowi’s favourite stall- simple, honest food cooked well!

Welcome to SURAKARTA | First Impressions of Solo ????????
Today, I'm saying sayonara to Semarang and I'm heading to Surakarta, also known as Solo. To get there, I'm taking a shuttle bus that is conveniently located across the street from my hotel. After a comfortable 2-hour bus ride, I make it to Surakarta in Central Java, Indonesia. My hotel shows it's not very far on the map so I decide just to huff it. And well, google maps doesn't have the right address and it sent me to the wrong address. Luckily it wasn't too far off, maybe 5 minutes on foot. I then check-in, give you a quick tour of my place, and we head out to check out my surroundings. Close to my hotel, I noticed there was a huge wall that surrounded was turned out to be a neighborhood. When I head into the neighborhood, I come across a lemonade stand and the owner greets me and asks me where I'm going. I told him I'm just wandering around and he tells me that there is a palace in this neighborhood and that this neighborhood is home to the royal family here in Surakarta. There is still a royal family that lives in a palace, the Surakarta Hadiningrat Palace, here in Solo.
Also, it turns out that this lemonade stand, named Lemonology, just opened and that I'm their first-ever customer. The owner and I chat for a bit and then I head to the palace. By the time I get there, I notice it's closed but that's ok, it was getting late and I was tired and so I'll head there another time. I go back a couple days later and make a video so stay tuned for that one.
After almost getting dumped on by the rain, I make it back to my hotel and enjoy some ramen and call it a day.

Juga, ternyata kios limun ini, bernama Lemonology, baru saja dibuka dan saya adalah pelanggan pertama mereka. Pemilik dan saya mengobrol sebentar dan kemudian saya menuju ke istana. Pada saat saya sampai di sana, saya melihat itu sudah tutup tapi tidak apa-apa, sudah larut dan saya lelah jadi saya akan pergi ke sana lain kali. Saya kembali beberapa hari kemudian dan membuat video jadi nantikan yang satu itu.
Setelah hampir tersiram oleh hujan, saya kembali ke hotel saya dan menikmati beberapa ramen dan menyebutnya sehari.

City Description:
Surakarta (also known as Solo) is a city and historic royal capital on the Indonesian island of Java. The 18th-century Keraton Kasunanan was the royal family’s residence and today is a museum of heirlooms, while Mangkunegaran palace has an elaborately painted pavilion. Surakarta is also a major center for dyed batik fabric, which is displayed at the Danar Hadi museum.Pasar Gede Hardjonagoro is one of the city’s biggest traditional markets selling batik, as well as street foods, produce and more. The Pasar Klewer bazaar is also known for batik, while the Pasar Triwindu market specializes in antiques. Next to the Pasar Klewer is the Masjid Agung, or Great Mosque, featuring classical Javanese architecture. Surakarta’s traditional performing arts can be seen at Sriwedari Park, a cultural center featuring shadow-puppet shows and classical dance. Within Sriwedari is Radya Pustaka Museum, which exhibits cultural artifacts including gold carvings and gamelan musical instruments.
Weather and Events:
The climate is tropical, with a rainy season that peaks Dec–Apr. Many travelers choose to visit May–Aug, when rain and thunderstorms are less frequent. The Solo Batik Carnival (Jun) showcases traditional batik craft with street parades featuring elaborate costumes and other colorful events.

Solo, also known as Surakarta, is located in Central Java, Indonesia, and is one of the most Chinese-inhabited cities in Indonesia. In addition to being the hometown of incumbent President Joko Widodo, Solo was also the ancient capital of the Mataram Kingdom from the 8th to 10th centuries. This Brahmanical dynasty contributed to the construction of Hindu temples and contributed to the diversity of Indonesia's history and culture.
Yogyakarta, the next door city, has its share of tourist attractions, with Borobudur and Prambanan as its two main attractions. In contrast, Yogyakarta is still a small town with a peaceful atmosphere, not suffering from overdevelopment and maintaining a quiet pace of life.
As a matter of fact, Yogyakarta and Solo are really brother cities, the kings of both cities are brothers. In 1755, Holland signed a treaty to divide Yogyakarta into two states, Yogyakarta Sultanate and Solo Sultanate. To this day, Yogyakarta is still an independent political entity ruled by the Sultan, whereas Solo was not able to obtain an independent administration due to resistance against the royal family. Nevertheless, Solo is still the historical and cultural center of Central Java, especially in the development and cultural preservation of batik costumes.
Even though the name of the city is still unfamiliar to many, many people have fond memories of the Indonesian folk song Bengawan Solo. The Solo River, the largest river on the Indonesian island of Java, flows through the city, and the beautiful song Bengawan Solo, written in 1940, has been sung in many languages around the world, spanning Japan, China, Hong Kong, and Malaysia, and creating beautiful visions in people's minds, but unfortunately, the Solo River is no longer as clear as it was in those days.
