We are visiting Malaysia’s border with Thailand and spend a day at a Malaysian village right on the border to Thailand

I am still in Kota Bharu in the Kelantan state of Malaysia. This state shares a border with Thailand. I’m always interested in visiting towns right on the borders, that is normally pretty interesting. There is a kampung (village) right on the border called Rantau Panjang. What’s really interesting here is that half of the town is in Thailand and the other half is in Malaysia. Separated by a river. So, we decided to visit this Malaysian kampung and explore around and see what’s life like right on the Malaysia Thailand border.
When you travel southeast Asia, you are going to cross probably quite a few borders. Mostly it is easy to cross border between countries in southeast Asia. But in these days, all of the borders are closed. Traveling southeast Asia is therefore not really possible at the moment. This makes it even more interesting to see what’s the border between Malaysia and Thailand looks like in these days.

With 1140 km in distance, the railway line connecting Bangkok with southern provinces that terminated in Sungai Golok, Narathiwat.

When comparing current conditions to July, Danok is now busier. Many restaurants are still closed. If you intend to come here for food, now is not the time.

If you come for the nightlife, I believe you will not be disappointed because there are now many clubs, bars, karaoke, live band and discotheques open. Danok's nightlife now is far more lively than that of Betong, Thailand. Of course, hotel prices are now higher than they were in July.

Jago 187| Menjelajahi Thailand Selatan dengan Kereta Api dari Su-ngai Kolok, Perbatasan Malaysia
Hari ke-25 saya memasuki Thailand melalui check-point Su-Ngai Kolok. Ini adalah tempat penyebrangan darat utama dari Malaysia ke Thailand. Saya berangkat dari Kota Bharu menuju Rantau Panjang, imigrasi Malaysia, yang berjarak 40 kilometer ke barat. Seharusnya ada bus ke sana, tapi karena salah terminal dan waktu mepet, akhirnya naik Grab.
Di imigrasi Thailand antrian cukup panjang. Banyak warga Malaysia yang suka pergi pulang hari untuk berbelanja. Thailand memang memperlakukan bebas visa untuk warga Indonesia, tapi karena saya dan kakak saya masuk lewat jalur yang tidak umum (orang Indonesia biasa langsung terbang ke Bangkok), kami dialihkan ke kepala imigrasi untuk interview tambahan sehingga total waktu habis 1 jam di sini. Untungnya saya jadi bisa melihat lebih banyak bagian dalam kantor imigrasi. Ternyata mereka santai, banyak yang kerja sambil dengar musik dari youtube ataupun bergiliran bergantian makan.
Dari imigrasi kami lanjut jalan 10 menit ke Stasiun Su-ngai Kolok. Sebenarnya nama kota ini adalah dari bahasa Melayu: Sungai Golok, sungai yang menjadi batas antar negara. Wilayah selatan Thailand memang dihuni orang Melayu. Bahkan saya beli SIM card di sini dengan bercakap Indonesia dengan pedagangnya.
Jam 12 kereta api berangkat dari Su-ngai Kolok menuju Bangkok yang berjarak 1200 kilometer di utara, menyusuri belalai Thailand dengan pegunungan Tennaserim (Tanah Seri) di barat. Meskipun saya duduk di bangku kelas 3 (kipas angin, kursi tegak), perjalanan cukup nyaman, apalagi karena tidak ada yang duduk di depan saya sehingga saya dapat meluruskan kaki.
Pemandangan bergangi antara sawah, perkebunan dan perbukitan. Awalnya saya masih dapat melihat masjid, tapi makin ke utara lebih banyak kuil Buddha. Di Phattalung, saya dapat melihat bukit Khao Ok Talu yang ikonik.
Kereta lanjut menelusuri ladang dan terowongan hingga akhirnya saya tiba di Thungsong Junction jam 7 malam. Saya turun di sini karena rencanya besok akan detour ke Nakhon Si Thammarat. Saya mampir di pasar malam dan takjub melihat buku Buddha di kamar hotel. Inilah Thailand.

Walking Border Crossing Malaysia Rantau Panjang - Thailand Sungai Kolok - 4K 60FPS HDR
This is how to take a train after crossing immigration at Malaysian side Rantau Panjang. Just after 5 minutes waking,you will see Thai immigration and mortorcycle taxi drivers. Get the stamp.You can walk to Sungai Kolok railway station but I recommend to take mortorcycle taxi because the sun is very strong. It's just 40 to 50 Baht (About US$1.5). Bus terminal is about 1.2KM away to the west from the railway station.

Accessing THAILAND via LAND! (SUNGAI GOLOK BORDERTOWN)
In another episode of our political border series, in this video I got the chance to visit and explore a couple of unique bordertowns in the northern edge of Semenanjung Malaysia (Peninsular Malaysia) that straddle Sungai Golok (Golok River), the natural political border between Malaysia and Thailand.
I started my journey in Kota Bharu, the capital of Kelantan state of Malaysia, then made my way northwest to Rantau Panjang, the bordertown on the Malaysian side of the river, then finally I crossed into Thailand to Sungai Kolok, the bordertown on the Thai side, which is also one of the southernmost towns in Thailand's deep south provinces. Come and join me as I discover further what the condition, the language and the people there are like!

19 Hours On Thailand's LONGEST TRAIN 3rd Class | Thailand to Malaysia ???????? ????????
No words can describe this experience... I will never forget it for the good and the bad reasons. 19 hours with one hour sleep and loads of bug bites.
I was in the 3rd class because they had no more sleeping tickets available.
After the train journey I ended up in a taxi 7 hour taxi ride to George Town.
It's the longest train journey in Thailand - Special Express No. 37 that goes between Bangkok and Sungai Kolok in Southern Thailand. The train leaves Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal at 4:10 p.m. and arrives in Sungai Kolok 18 hours and 15 minutes later at 10:25 a.m. This is the longest rail journey in Thailand.
