De Blokhuispoort | Leeuwarden | Leeuwarden Netherlands | The Netherlands | Things to do Netherlands
De Blokhuispoort is a cultural business-centre in the city centre of Leeuwarden. Housed in a former prison, it is now full of creative initiatives, businesses, and pop-up shops- as well as eateries, cafés, a hostel, and a brand-new city library. The current building was built in the second half of the nineteenth century on the site of a former fortress that stood there since the 1500s. De Blokhuispoort is located on the southeastern corner of the old town. It has undergone many adaptations and extensions over the centuries and has served as a prison since 1580. In its present form, the complex is 130 years old and has 180 cells.
The historic building is now also home to the many unique cultural events in the city. The complex is state property and after the closure of the prison, it was given the function of a cultural centre. About 130 creative entrepreneurs have found a place there. The former staff of the prison have set up the Blokhuispoort Foundation, which aims to promote the preservation of De Blokhuispoort as cultural heritage. This Foundation has set up a Prison Museum in the alcove building with a focus on the history of the buildings.
The Cell-block H is one of the old cell-blocks, in which now one can find creatives with their own shops and ateliers. The artisans produce jewellery, greetings cards, art, and design- and everything is for sale. The individual cells are now transformed into ateliers and shops. A diverse environment for small business-owners with creative products, all of which carry a small part of the Blokhuispoort in their design and execution.
Since 2018, the main library ‘dbieb’ of the city of Leeuwarden has also been moved to De Blokhuispoort. The building also houses a hostel called Alibi in which visitors can experience how it feels to stay in a prison cell.
If you’re looking for things to do in Leeuwarden, there are plenty of options. You can explore the city’s historic center by foot or by bike, check out one of the many art galleries or museums, take a stroll along the river or go fishing in one of the local lakes. There’s also plenty of culture available if you want to explore something different.

We took the train from Amsterdam Centraal Station to Steenwijk Station, and got on bus 70 and got off at the Dominee Hylkemaweg (the driver usually lets people know that it's the right stop). Hop off and go down the stairs to go under the bridge. DO NOT cross the street there.
You may have to transfer trains in Almere or Zwolle. It's also possible to get to Steenwijk Station direct from Amsterdam Zuid Station which is easily accessible with the 52 Metro.

How to visit Giethoorn, Netherlands | A Charming Village without Roads or Cars
Giethoorn village, the most beautiful and fairytale village in the Netherlands. The Dutch village where the inhabitants can only sail around, walk or cycle to transport themselves. Every year, 1 million people visit Giethoorn.
Village of Giethoorn: The part of our village that most (foreign) tourists will see when they visit us is called: ''Giethoorn village''. This part of our village contains hand-dug canals and all small islands which are inter connected by 176 bridges to the mainland. In fact, on all these islands, there are houses (farmhouses) which are built in the 18th and 19th centuries. A walking/cycling path named: 'Binnenpad' runs right trough this area. Tourist shops and restaurants (which are well represented) are interspersed with typical Dutch houses with thatched roofs.
Dutch village without roads: Giethoorn village has no roads in the center. So of course, no roads means also no cars. Visitors and residents of Giethoorn village need to park their car outside the village at special car parks. This car-free area is the commercial heart of our village. You can rent whisper boats, board a guided cruise or visit a museum here, along with lots of choices of restaurants and cafes. This cycling/foot path known as the 'Binnenpad' is like walking on to a film set.
Venice of the North: All these roof thatched houses in the Venice of the North are often surrounded by deep green well-kept lawns with beautiful flowering hydrangeas. So, in combination with the many waterways with rows of weeping willows along the canals and the 176 bridges you easily imagine yourself in a romantic fairy tale. However, it is important to remember this town without streets, is one of the top-10 tourist locations in Netherlands. In other words, you are never alone when you visit the Venice of Netherlands. How to get to Giethoorn from Amsterdam? How to visit Giethoorn, Netherlands
There are several convenient options for traveling from Amsterdam to Giethoorn, which is approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) away. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the available methods:
By car
The most straightforward way to reach Giethoorn is by car. The journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. Simply take the A1 highway from Amsterdam, then follow the A6 and A32 to Steenwijkerland. From there, take exit 6-Steenwijk and follow the signs to Giethoorn. Keep in mind that parking may be limited in the village, so plan accordingly and arrive early during peak season.
By train and bus
Public transportation is a convenient and eco-friendly option for reaching Giethoorn. First, take a train from Amsterdam Central Station to Steenwijk, which takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Trains run regularly throughout the day, and tickets can be purchased at the station or online in advance. Once you arrive in Steenwijk, catch bus number 70 or 270 to Giethoorn. Giethoorn, a beautiful village in The Netherlands. Not roads, but small canals connect the houses. A boat tour is a must. In this 4K video, I will give you some tips for when you travel to this beautiful place in Holland, located about 1 hour and 20 minute drive from Amsterdam.
Grote drukte in Giethoorn. Chaos op het water komt steeds vaker voor. Het dorp wordt op piekdagen overspoeld door toeristen uit China en Arabische landen. Toch is het ook voor binnenlandse toeristen een prachtig dorp om te varen. In deze video kom je alles te weten over een bezoek aan Giethoorn.

Giethoorn is located in the north of the Netherlands, about an hour and 20 minutes drive from Amsterdam and Schiphol Airport. You can travel by train to the nearby Steenwijk station and from there travel further by bus.
Sailing through the canals is the number one way to discover Giethoorn and the surrounding area, which is a national park. Most convenient is renting your own electric whisper boat, which costs around 30 euros per hour. You can find many rental companies. It is also possible to take a tour boat or enjoy the views with a canoe.
There are restaurants on different locations, all from local owners. So certainly don't expect an international coffee or fastfood brand. Although Giethoorn appears to be a large museum, it is the residential area of the inhabitants. When you sail, observe the priority rules and respect each other. Hundreds of thousands of tourists visit Giethoorn every year, while it only has 2600 inhabitants.
