*Sremska Mitrovica* is a city and the administrative center of the Srem District in the autonomous province of Vojvodina, Serbia. It is situated on the left bank of the Sava river in the north-west Serbia. _This town is famous for it’s architecture, beauty and its famous history._
As *Sirmium* , it was a capital of the Roman Empire during the Tetrarchy of 4th century CE. Ten Roman emperors were born in or near this city.
The modern town name is Sremska Mitrovica (Serbian: Сремска Митровица). Mitrovica stems from Saint Demetrius or Sveti Dimitrije in Serbian.
The name of the city during the reign of the Roman Empire was Sirmium.
As of 2022, the city has a total population of 40,144 inhabitants, while its administrative area has a population of 72,580 inhabitants.

I traveled through Great Fortress Road of Eastern Serbia and saw the most amazing sites and destinations, and most importantly, Serbian fortresses, as I traveled along the Danube. When it comes to Danube travel in Serbia, the Great Fortress Road trip is something you MUST do. I have no idea why Serbia tourism isn't pushing this part of Serbia more!! It is my favorite part of Serbia.

OUR STORY
Hey! We're Olivia and Nathan ???????? A couple from California.
We met back in 2014 in Monterey, California. I (Olivia) was a senior in college & Nathan had recently moved back to the area after living in Italy.
After a few “deep life talks” (ones that were so foreign to me) and hearing about the lifestyle Nathan had been creating for himself for the last 6 years, I wanted to spend more time with him.
We started dating and I learned how he’d moved to Cambodia when he was 17, Germany when he was 18, Italy when he was 20, and was itching to travel again.
I was fascinated and wondered HOW THE HECK DID THIS GUY PAY FOR ALL OF THAT?
Nathan would work in California for 2 years, save every dollar he could, move abroad, find a job in that country, live there for 1-2 years and then do it all over again. Each time, he’d learn the language of that country, acquire new skills & make lifelong friends.
I was deeply inspired & wanted to travel with him. After 1 year of working our butts off and saving every dollar we could, we moved to Australia. We lived + worked there for 3 years (learned to speak perfect Australian lol) & created online jobs so we could continue traveling full-time.
We were traveling South America when covid hit, flew home and bought an RV to travel the US.
Down to earth, entertaining, and informative is our goal — we want you to feel like you’re experiencing the day with us.

Camp site Zasavica - Sremska Mitrovica - Serbia
- Camping site Zasavica is one of the youngest, but also one of the most modern and best-equipped camping sites in Serbia, with a capacity of 42 motorhome (caravan) pitches. The camping site is ideal for nature lovers as it is located close to the Special Nature Reserve Zasavica, where the reserve can be visited by boat, pedestrian tours, individually or in guided groups.

Come with David as he films ancient Sirmium in the modern day Serbian town of Sremska Mitrovica for David’s Been Here. Sirmium is a fascinating Roman imperial complex that dates back to the first century AD. It grew to become one of the most important cities in the Roman Empire and where several Roman Emperors were born.
Upon arrival, David heads to the town center to view one of the largest areas to be uncovered. He then pays a visit to the museum for a tour of Roman artifacts: tombstones, sarcophagus, sculptures, columns, and coins.
Third stop of the day takes David to a 5th century Christian Basilica dedicated to St. Demetrius. Sirmium actually had one of the highest concentrations of Christian Basilicas, especially since Christianity was rapidly growing through the region in the first half of the 4th century.
“In the first ten years of the same fourth century Sirmium had the greatest number of martyrs for the new Christian faith on the territory of modern Serbia during the Great Persecution. Along with the longest list of documented bishops for the Early Christian church in Serbia, Sirmium also has the highest concentration of Early Christian basilicas. Finally, the first Christian emperor Constantine spent more time during his reign in Sirmium than in any other city in the Balkans.”

After that, David visits the best for last – the remains of the Imperial complex, which are preserved within a building in the center of town for all to see. What we can see is only a portion of the original structure, which occupied 15% of the entire city! What we see today are some of the original mosaics, bath system, and palace walls.
Sirmium is an easy daytrip from Belgrade. Sremska Mitrovica is just a one-hour drive east on the road to Croatia.

Sremska Mitrovica, Сремска Митровица Szávaszentdemeter is a city at the Sava River in Serbia. Sremska Mitrovica is the centre of the of Vojvodina in Serbia. Sremska Mitrovica is one of the oldest cities of Europe. In Roman Times the city was known as Sirmium. Parts of the Roman Imperial Palace can still be seen. Some highlights of Sremska Mitrovica are the library, the Cathedral of Saint Demetrius, the Imperial Palace, the Railway Station, the Military- border building, the Museum and Gallery, Building of the Police Station and the Park and the Stone flower fountain. Sremska Mitrovica has a population of 40,000 and approximately 75,000 live in the metropolitan area.
