Top 10 CITIES Switzerland: Most beautiful Swiss Places – The Highlights [Travel Guide]

Switzerland is full of beautiful cities! They are urban, vibrant and very happening. Although Switzerland is a small country, the diversity among the cities is very noticeable. The architecture, the art and the culture differ a lot from city to city. You will find the cities of Switzerland by the river, lake or even in the valleys. Each city has its unique appearance as well as its hotspots and attractions of where to go to.
Sion is the capital of the very touristy canton of Valais (Wallis). Interestingly, Sion is only little known but ranks easily among the most beautiful cities of Switzerland. Sion feels like being in Italy but is a French-speaking city. Sion is vibrant, full of street art and also a foodie hub. The most remarkable however are the two castles up on the hills. Lugano is the largest city of Ticino in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland. Lugano lays by the lake, surrounded by the Swiss Alps, and one can feel that Italy is quite near. Lugano charms with its many alleys, culture, lake promenade and its view points. The best view over the surrounding and the city of Lugano you can get at the Monte Brè or Monte San Salvatore. Basel is the hub for the pharmaceutical industry. Basel is an old city and full of culture. It’s important to explore the many alleys with their colorful houses, see the red city hall, the minster and cross the bridges. Basel has a strong connection to its traditions. Important to mention here are the Vogelgryff and the Morgestraich. Bern is the federal city (capital) of Switzerland and the only town that is considered UNESCO world heritage. Very typical for Bern are the many arcades and the fountains. Bern’s old city is really a highlight, thus make sure to spend here at least half a day. Neuchâtel is in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, a town that feels Mediterranean and sort of French/Italian. The highlight of Neuchâtel are the lake promenade, the graffiti alley and the collegiate church with the castle. Schaffhausen is probably the largest and best preserved old city in Switzerland. Schaffhausen’s old town charms with its colorful houses and oriel windows (balcony windows). Schaffhausen is easy to explore by walk it’s pretty much car-free. The best things to do in and around Schaffhausen are a visit to the Museum zu Allerheiligen, walking at the Vordergasse alley, going up to the Munot and seeing the nearby Rhinefalls. The Munot is a centre for culture and hosts various events. Zurich is the largest city in all of Switzerland. It’s the hub for innovation and business but at the same time is a very touristy destination. Zurich’s old city concentrates around the Limmat quay. Walk along the river Limmat, enter the many protestant churches or head up to the Lindenhof and Polyterrase to enjoy a great vista over the old city of Zurich. Zurich is modern but also very cultural; the major event being the Sechseläuten festival. Fribourg is a city on two levels. The old city of perfectly preserved and thus great to explore. Ascend the church tower of the St. Nicolas cathedral or the Loretta chapel to enjoy a brilliant vista. Fribourg city has also some similarities with Luxemburg. Solothurn is the most beautiful baroque city of Switzerland. The old town is full of beautiful houses and concentrates around the river Aare. The major landmark is the St. Urseren Cathedral that offers you a great view from its tower. Lucerne is no doubt the most beautiful of the Top 10 Swiss Cities. Lucerne has been a favorite for many tourists since it offers so many great things such as a charming river promenade along the Reuss, a great view over Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee) and the Swiss Alps and otherwise seems very inviting with its alleys and painted houses. Lucerne’s best attractions are the Jesuitenkirche, Gletschergarten museum and many more. Explore Lucerne on the water by taking a boat ride or head up to Mount Pilatus to get a perfect vista over the Swiss Alps and this old city.

Solothurn Switzerland - 11 Reasons Why To Visit & Chocolate Factory Tour | 90+ Countries With 3 Kids

Join us for a tour of Solothurn Switzerland!

Solothurn is a vibrant town of over 16,000 inhabitants. It’s located on the German side of Switzerland and is regarded as the finest Baroque town. You can see how the graceful Italian influences blend with French charm and German practicality. Solothurn is 30 kilometres east of Biel-Bienne, alongside the river Aare and at the southern point of the Jura mountain range.

From the 16th to the 18th centuries, the Catholic town of Solothurn was the residence of the French king’s ambassador and that’s why most of the buildings in the historic part of Solothurn date back to that period. For this reason Solothurn is also known as the Ambassador's town.

The number eleven has special significance in Solothurn: it was the eleventh canton to join the Swiss Confederation, the Old Town has eleven churches and chapels and the same number of fountains and towers. Additionally, the St Ursus Cathedral took eleven years to build, has eleven altars and bells, and its Italian-style staircase in front have levels between every eleven steps. Unsurprisingly, Solothurn's local beer is also called Öufi –Bier (DE) or Eleven Ale. There is also a boat called the Öufi-Boat (DE) and a popular bar called Eleven (DE).

Join us as we also visit the Camille Bloch Chocolate Factory and enjoy some truly delicious Swiss Chocolate!

Solothurn Switzerland Walking Tour | Discover the City in Details

Solothurn Switzerland Walking Tour | Discover the City in Details.

Solothurn is a town, a municipality, and the capital of the canton of Solothurn in Switzerland. It is located in the north-west of Switzerland on the banks of the Aare and on the foot of the Weissenstein Jura mountains.

The town is the only municipality of the district of the same name.

The town got its name from Salodurum, a Roman-era settlement. From 1530 to 1792 it was the seat of the French ambassador to Switzerland. The pedestrian-only old town was built between 1530 and 1792 and shows an impressive array of Baroque architecture, combining Italian Grandezza, French style, and Swiss ideas. The town has eighteen structures listed as heritage sites.

The official language of Solothurn is (the Swiss variety of Standard) German, but the main spoken language is the local variant of the Alemannic Swiss German dialect.

The oldest finds from Solothurn probably date from the Paleolithic era. The remains of a Mesolithic camp were discovered in 1986 during renovations of the former Kino Elite building. From the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Age, only a few scattered items have been discovered.

The Roman settlement at Solothurn was probably built around AD 15-25 as a road station and bridge head on the road from Aventicum to Augusta Raurica or Vindonissa. A small vicus or settlement quickly developed around the castrum. Solothurn is first mentioned in 219 as vico salod[uro][4] on the so-called Eponastein. The name may indicate either that a Celtic settlement existed on the site before or just be a testimony to the mixed Gallo-Roman culture in the north-west provinces of the Roman Empire.[5] It came to be known as Salodurum. Its strategical importance lay in the position at the approach to the Rhine from southeast. In the 2nd-3rd Century AD, the vicus expanded rapidly to fill almost all of what is now the old town of Solothurn, including a portion of today's suburb south of the Aare.[5]

The Roman bridge was probably somewhat above the current Wengibrücke. The Roman era river bed was 40–80 meters (130–260 ft) north of the present Aare. The main street of the Vicus was well below the present main street. In addition to the normal government of the settlement, there were two mayors (magistri), and a six-member college (seviri Augustales), which was entrusted with supporting the imperial cult. Salodurum was also home to a guard detachment of the XXII Legion, whose high command was stationed in Mainz in Germany. According to inscriptions, there was a temple of Jupiter, a temple of Apollo Augustus and an altar to the goddess of horses Epona, who was popular in the Roman military and of Celtic origin. However, the locations of those three temples is not known. There was bath house on the main street and a pottery district in the northwest of the town which have been documented archaeologically. A cemetery with urns and cremation burials on the eastern end of the Vicus was discovered in 1762–63 during the demolition of the old church of St. Ursus. In addition, two Roman tombs were discovered in the same area.

Following the capitulation of Solothurn on 2 March 1798, the French General Balthazar Alexis Henri Schauenburg set up a provisional government on the following day. The new government met in April to set up the new constitution. The eleven old Vogtei (baillywicks) were replaced by five districts: Solothurn, Biberist, Balsthal, Olten, and Dornach. The municipal Bürgergemeinde laid claim to the assets of the defunct city-state and in 1801 it received the Sönderungsconvention, large estates and extensive forest land outside the town. In 1831 the cantonal parliament withdrew all political power from the eleven city guilds. Over the following years (1831–1842) all the guilds were dissolved. Due to the municipal law of 1859, the enforcement of the Federal Constitution of 1874 and the Cantonal Constitution of 1875, an Einwohnergemeinde was created. The Einwohnergemeinde included all residents of the town, as opposed to the more limited Bürgergemeinde.

In 1828 Solothurn became the seat of the Bishop of Basel.

Since 1897, the municipal council has been elected by proportional voting and consists of 30 members and 15 alternate members. As the executive body, it elects the council commission (seven members). Mayor and Vice-Mayor are elected by the people. The municipal assembly is the legislative body. The composition of the council remained remarkably stable between 1917 and 1973. The Liberals held an average of 60% of the seats, the Social Democrats and the Conservative People's Party (CVP today), about 20% each. In 1970, the municipality granted voting rights for women. With the emergence of new parties, the Liberals lost its dominant position. 2009, the FDP 30%, SP 23%, CVP 23%, the Greens 17% and 7% of the votes go to the SVP.

Rock band Krokus was formed in Solothurn in 1974.

Solothurn walking tour - The most beautiful Baroque town of Switzerland

Solothurn is regarded as the finest Baroque town in Switzerland, where Italian grandeur is combined with French charm and German practicality.
Fine Baroque and Renaissance buildings, such as the noble Palais Besenval, and magnificent religious buildings meet the visitor at every end and turn – the Old Town has eleven churches and chapels and the same number of fountains and towers. Truly magnificent is the St.Urs Cathedral, with an Italian-style staircase in front. Inside, there are wonderful Baroque stuccos.
Between the beautiful historic monuments, the patrician buildings and the sturdy fortifications, the traffic-free Old Town is a pleasant place to wander, with lots of small shops and inns. On warm summer evenings, it is very pleasant to sit in the garden restaurants and bars by the Aare.

// SUMMARY //

The residents of Solothurn, Switzerland are crazy about the number 11 — and here’s why! (Trust us! It’s one of the most unique places to visit in Switzerland!)

-In the Swiss Confederation, Solothurn canton is listed as the 11th canton of Switzerland. (If you’re curious about the history of Switzerland, this would be a good place to start!)
-The clock of Solothurn runs on Switzerland time! It only has 11 numbers and it uses 11 bells to chime the Solothurn song at 11 o’clock.
-There are 11 churches, cathedrals, and chapels in Solothurn. There used to be 11 chaplains as well. (Tip: St. Ursus Cathedral is the most 11-ish!)
-If you find museums interesting, Solothurn has 11 of them.
-This Swiss village has 11 fountains as well.
-Don’t miss the 11 towers, 11 gates, and 11 bastions of this walled city. Some of them have great views of the Aare River too! (Don't know what a bastion is? Neither did we! Find out what it looks like in our video!)
-Try the Öufi beer. Öufi means 11 in their local dialect.

Solothurn Switzerland, beautiful small city in 4k - DJI Mavic 2 Pro | Switzerland trip

Solothurn Switzerland, beautiful small city in 4k - DJI Mavic 2 Pro | Switzerland trip
Solothurn, Switzerland this small beautiful city in baroque style really impressed me with its mixed historic architecture.
Solothurn is the capital city of the canton of Solothurn and is located on the river Aare and on the foot of the Jura mountains.
The architecture in the city ranges from Italian, French and Swiss styles.
Truly a nice small city not far from Bern, good option if you are on a Switzerland trip.
Now enjoy 4k aerial footage of Solothurn ????

10 Best Places to Visit in Switzerland

You are probably thinking about Swiss chocolate, Swiss cheese, and clocks, too. These are some of the things that you know about Switzerland already. But this landlocked country is a haven for anybody who might be looking for some truly picturesque and sweepingly dramatic landscapes. It’s in the middle of the Alps, so how couldn’t it boast the picture perfect look that it does?

You might find yourself getting a cogwheel railway up a mountain one moment and visiting slices of medieval heritage nestled on lakes the next. You’d better prepare yourself for some breathtaking views of craggy peaks from Swiss mountain towns, exploring historic districts on a crisp backdrop of glittering water, and marveling at majestic alpine meadows ringed by snowy mountains. DAY TRIP TO SOLOTHURN SWITZERLAND - Jura Mountains, Oberbalmberg-Röti Walk & Solothurn Old Town

Recently we went on a day trip to Solothurn canton. We did a circular walk in the Jura Mountains (from Oberbalmberg to Röti) and looked around the Solothurn old town at the golden hour. As you can see, it was all very beautiful and we even discovered an epic cliff that is very similar to our Creux du Van here in Neuchatel. We will definitely be coming back to explore more of this area!

Oberbalmberg - Röti circular hike (Only do this walk when there is no snow! We made a mistake doing this hike so early in the year and parts of the trail were very very sketchy...)
