Sneek was founded in the 10th century on a sandy peninsula at the crossing site of a dike with an important waterway (called the Magna Fossa in old documents). This waterway was dug when the former Middelzee silted up. The dike can still be traced in the current street pattern and street names like Hemdijk, Oude Dijk and Oosterdijk.

Sneek received several city rights in the 13th century, which became official in 1456. Sneek was now one of the eleven Frisian cities. This was also the beginning of a period of blooming trade for the city that would last until about 1550. In 1492 construction of a moat and wall around the city began. In those days Sneek was the only walled city in Friesland. The Waterpoort and the Bolwerk remain today. Before 2011, the city was an independent municipality.

Friesland- Leeuwarden, Sneek & De Alde Feanen NP
New Amsterdam Travel Video- Friesland, which is a Dutch province in the northern part of the Netherlands, is another great getaway from Amsterdam. Known for its boating recreation on its many lakes, the area is also home to Leeuwarden & Sneek, two cities with plenty of culture. So our trip was a nice blend of city exploration and enjoying nature by bike and on the water. We based ourselves in Sneek and travelled by train and by bike from there. We explored the farmland area around the Heegermeer and Fluessen Lakes with their charming villages, windmills and water canals; walked around Sneek and Leeuwarden; and travelled by bike and train to De Alde Feanen National Park. We even discovered another Dutch hidden gem: Park Vijversburg, which is a collection of random pieces of art interspersed around 5 or 6 different themed gardens.

Sneek is situated in Southwest-Friesland in the Netherlands, close to the Sneekermeer. Sneek is well known for its canals, the Watergate, symbol of the city, and watersports. Sneek is one of the eleven Frisian cities.
Sneek was founded in the 10th century on a sandy peninsula at the crossing site of a dike with an important waterway, called the Magna Fossa in old documents. This waterway was dug when the former Middelzee silted up. The dike can still be traced in the current street pattern and various street names are a reminder of it.
Sneek received several city rights in the 13th century, which became official in 1456. Sneek was now one of the eleven Frisian cities. This was also the beginning of a period of blooming trade for the city that would last until about 1550. In 1492 construction of a moat and wall around the city began. In those days Sneek was the only walled city in Friesland. The Watergate and the Stronghold remain until today.

Sneek Nederland
Sneek is een derde plaats in de Provincie Friesland en ligt ten zuidwesten van Leeuwarden.
Sneek is gelegen nabij het Sneekermeer en is bekend vanwege de historische binnenstad met zijn Waterpoort en de Sneekweek.
Sneek is ontstaan in de 10de eeuw op een hoger gelegen zandige landtong en is tot ontwikkeling gekomen na de aanleg van de zuidelijke dijk van de Hempolder Scherhem. Daar kruiste deze de vaarweg naar het Noorden. Deze vaarweg naar het Noorden was nodig geworden omdat de Middelzee door dichtslibbing verloren was gegaan.
In 1295 vond in Sneek een grote stadsbrand plaats, waarbij een deel van de stad geheel verloren ging.
Sneek kreeg vanaf de 13de eeuw diverse stadsrechten, die in 1465 officieel werden vastgelegd. Sneek werd daarmee een van de elf steden. Dit was tevens het begin van een bloeiperiode als Handelspost die nog tot circa 1550 zou duren. In 1492 werd met de aanleg van een stadsgracht en stadmuur begonnen. Vanaf die tijd was Sneek de enige ommuurde stad van Friesland. Van de oude Vestingwerken van Sneek resteren thans nog de Waterpoort en het Bolwerk.
