Valmiera Ruins of the Livonian Order Castle. Latvia

The remains of the Order castle ruins and the city fortifications, which were ruined during the Great Northern War, preserve memories of the Valmiera city centre from the 13th century until nowadays.

What a place! A (slightly off the beaten track) tour of Lithuania's capital Vilnius on its birthday.

At last I complete my tour of the Baltic capitals with a fun day in Vilnius, Lithuania, a city I stumble into on its BIRTHDAY! It was totally unplanned wander, so join me to see what I find in surely one of my favourite cities to date...

Castle in Birini, Latvia

Built on a hill near the lake in 1860, Birini Castle makes a perfect romantic spot for weddings or other celebrations.
You can explore the castle premises during specially arranged tours. Luxurious rooms are available for overnight stays. The castle restaurant offers Latvian and European dishes, and in summer, an ethnomuseum-tavern is open at the water mill of Birini Castle.
By the castle, there is a huge park for quiet romantic walks with many unique monuments created by both nature and man.
One can also take the opportunity to climb the water tower, go horse riding or sledding.

“Stonehenge” in Smiltene, Latvia

This unofficial tourist site reminding of the famous Stonehenge in the UK is located in an open field on the outskirts of Smiltene, in Kalnamuiža.
In fact, these are the ordinary barn ruins, but due to their name, they attract tourists from all over Latvia.

Lazberg Manor (or Fianden) was first mentioned in the 16th century. At that time, the knight Buhol was its owner; in 1798, Baron Johann Gottlieb von Wolf bought the estate.
In the 1950s, the castle housed a cultural center, and later – apartments and a warehouse.
The building is now badly damaged; the tower and a small part of the facade have survived.

In this video we would like to tell you a little about the best places to visit in Latvia as well as provide some tips on languages, currency, driving, parking, camping and shopping.

Latvia is a really interesting country to visit.

Latvia has a population of around 2 million people and the capital is Riga with a population of around 700,000 people.

The official languages are Latvian, Lithuanian and Russian.

Many younger people in larger towns and cities across Europe speak English as their second language, however in the rural areas sometimes not a lot of English is spoken, particularly by older people.

The currency is the Euro.

Wild camping is permitted with permission from the local land owner.

Vignettes are required for driving on the Latvian road networks however they can be purchased on line via sms or via a smart phone App.

The road system is in poor condition in many places.

Credit cards are accepted widely in Latvia, however, some vendors only accept Visa but not Mastercard, or vice versa.

There are different rules regarding “parking” and “camping” – many countries allow “overnight parking” as long as you don't camp there – the definition of “camping” is if you set up anything outside of your vehicle eg tables and chairs, and or BBQ, and or put up your sun awning and or position your vehicle on levelling ramps etc – then that is classified as camping.

Located in the small city of Smiltene, Meteorits takes its name from a meteorite crater located a 5-minute walk away. It offers rooms with satellite TV and free Wi-Fi. Free private parking is available.
The rooms of the Meteorits have a classic interior design and basic amenities. All are heated and have a private bathroom with a shower. It also offers a Norwegian style cottage with self-catering facilities.
The Meteorits has a pond on site. There are skiing possibilities in the Winter. In the Summer guests can go cycling. A sauna is available, as is a seasonal outdoor swimming pool.
The guest house is in a quiet, remote area, away from the rush of big cities. The nearest city is Valmiera, 21.7 miles away. The nearest bus station is a 7 minute walk away.

The first thing to do when arriving in a new city is to go to a local cafe. We ate breakfast at a local bakery and each ordered a pastry, which came out to less than $5. The food in the Baltics and Latvia is affordable.

We tried to visit the Sigulda bobsleigh track, one of the unique attractions in this small town in Europe. Unfortunately, it was closed for the next couple of hours. Instead, we visited Gauja National Park in Sigulda and took a cable car ride across the valley. Hiking in Gauja National Park in the winter is a unique sight to see in Europe. After Crossing Gauja National park’s snowy landscape and we eventually made it to Gutmanis Cave, which is the largest cave in the Baltics.

One of the highlights was visiting the Sigulda bobsleigh track, it cost us less than $15 per person and it was one of the more memorable activities we’ve done in Latvia! The bobsleigh track was built in 1986 and is one of the only bobsleigh tracks open to pros and tourists!
