03:06 - Brno City Centre

1) Špilberk Castle
For over seven centuries, Špilberk Castle has dominated the skyline of Brno, a reminder of safety and protection it provided. However, there have been times in history of Brno when the fortress inspired fear, and represented oppression for the citizens of the city.

From a major royal castle and the seat of the Moravian margraves, it gradually turned into a huge baroque fortress, the heaviest prison in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and then a barracks. Today, Špilberk houses the Brno City Museum, and is one of the most significant cultural centres in Brno.

2) Brno Cathedral
St. Peter & Paul Cathedral (or just Petrov in Czech) is one of the most important showplace in Czech Republic and view point number one in Brno. It is also pictured on Czech ten Koruna coin.

3) Brno City Centre
Brno is known for its modernist buildings, like the restored Villa Tugendhat, completed in 1930 by architect Mies van der Rohe. Discover interesting buildings, sculptures, and streets in the city centre of Brno!

Czech - Brno - 4K UHD Ultra High Definition Resolution

Czech - Brno
Czech Republic

Brno, German Brünn, city, southeastern Czech Republic. Brno lies in the eastern foothills of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, at the confluence of the Svratka and Svitava rivers. It is the traditional capital of Moravia. North of Brno is the Moravian Karst, a region famous for its caves, grottoes, and gorges.

There is archaeological evidence that the city’s environs were inhabited in prehistoric times. Traces of Neanderthal man were found in a nearby cave called Švédův Stůl (“Swedish Table”), and a camping ground of the Cro-Magnon mammoth hunters (30,000 BCE) was discovered at Dolní Věstonice, on the edge of the Pavlov Hills, 20 miles (30 km) south. Also in the locality are traces of Celts and other tribes and many Slav settlements from the 5th and 6th centuries. The name Brno comes from the Celtic brynn (“hill town”).

German colonization, beginning in the 13th century, stimulated the growth of the community, which became an incorporated city in 1243. In the 14th century the margraves of Moravia acquired and for long kept control of Brno, which, dominated by the castle on the Špilberk, withstood several sieges: in 1428 by the Hussites (religious reformers); in 1464 by George of Poděbrady, the Bohemian leader; and in 1645 by the Swedes, under Lennart Torstenson. Later, during the Silesian War of the Austrian Succession (1740–45), it was invaded again. It was occupied by the French in 1805, before Napoleon’s triumph over the combined Austrian and Russian armies at Slavkov (Austerlitz), 7 miles (11 km) southeast of Brno.

The Špilberk castle was turned into a political prison and military hospital under the Habsburgs. In 1832 the Italian poet Silvio Pellico revealed in his book Le mie prigioni (“My Prisons”) the horrors of the Špilberk dungeons, where at that time the Carbonari group of Italian patriots was imprisoned by the Austrians. Gregor Mendel, the monk-geneticist, worked on his theory of heredity (1865) in the monastery at Brno, and the city was the lifetime home of the composer Leoš Janáček.

Despite the ravages of war, many fine old buildings have survived, including the churches of St. Thomas and St. James and the Gothic church of the Augustinian monastery. Tugendhat House (1930), designed by architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1992. The old town, with narrow streets, is enclosed by a belt of boulevards, beyond which are several modern housing projects.

The inhabitants, predominantly German prior to World War II, are now mainly Czech. Brno has developed as an educational (Masaryk University, 1919) and industrial centre, famed for its international trade fairs. The city’s manufactures include textiles and metallurgical products. A famous light machine gun—the ZB, later manufactured in Enfield, England (now part of Enfield borough, London), as the Bren machine gun—was developed at Brno. Pop. (2007 est.) 366,680.

Slavkov u Brna (Austerlitz)

Slavkov u Brna (in German: Austerlitz), is a country town east of Brno in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic. Population: 5,900. The town is widely known for giving its name to the Battle of Austerlitz which actually took place some kilometers to the west of the town.

At the beginning of the 13th century, the Teutonic Order built a monastery stronghold whose remains can still be seen today in the vaults of the Austerlitz Palace. The first written testimony about the place date from 1237. The Czech name Slavkov is first documented in 1361, the German name Austerlitz in 1633 and is said to be a truncation of the Czech Novosedlice (Novosedlicz, Nausedlicz), which means new settlement, although this cannot be clarified definitively. After the dissolution of the Order, the town became the property of a number of noble owners until, in 1509, the local gentry family of Kaunitz assumed control for more than 400 years.

In this film, one can see the Baroque Slavkov Castle which has 115 rooms and an impressive garden in the French style. The Palace was designed by Italian architect Domenico Martinelli. In its salon, an armistice was signed between Austria and France after the battle of Austerlitz on 2 December, 1805.

Here one can see the synagogue which was built in the mid nineteenth century and has been maintained since the murder of the Jewish population nearly seventy years ago. it was renovated in 1998. After the battle of Austerlitz, a French officer went to the synagogue and requested that a rabbi said the prayer for the dead.

Travel to Czechia - Brno - 4K - High views from the Old Town - 2023

Once you exit Brno’s central train station you will already find yourself in the heart of the old town, so all the main city centre sights such as the cathedral are within an easy five to ten-minute walk.

Located on Petrov Hill, the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul dominates the Brno skyline.
This 14th century cathedral is an interesting mix between the Gothic architecture of its exterior and the fine Baroque interior.

Right below the cathedral you can find the pleasant Denis Gardens (Denisovy Sady).

Just like the cathedral, Spilberk Castle is located on the top of a hill overlooking the entire city of Brno, so if you are after some fine views this is the place to go.

Spilberk Castle was completed in the 13th century ... and primarily used as a royal residence.

From Brno to Slavkov

This is the road journey out of Brno towards Slavkov. I wanted to see the site of the 1805 battlefield at Austerlitz but now I realise that this was not the best route to have taken as it completely overshoots the battlefield.

Brno is NOT a day-trip kind of city. Yes, it is smaller than Prague but one should consider 2 nights minimum as there is so much to see and to experience. Brno is located 115 miles (186 km) SouthEast of Prague (Praha, Prag, Praga). Average round trip train tickets (Prague to Brno and back) can start from $15 (€13), depending on the season, class and which days. It is about 3 hour train ride so sit back pop on your headphones, have your camera or cell phone ready to record and enjoy the ride :-) You can NOT reserve tickets more than 60 days in advance. Here is the link to reserve tickets (This site has multiple language support).

And UNLIKE Prague there is no scam places you need to worry about!!! My advice is to change your money in this city along the Masarykova Street, the main street (Before leaving to Prague exchange again :-) Plenty of cafes, restaurants, snack, bars and fast food places on that street as well before heading up towards the Liberty Square or to check in at your hotel. No need to take taxi or public transportation because from Brno Main Station (Brno hlavní nádraží or Brno hl. n.) to Liberty Square (Náměstí Svobody) is a very short walk of 8-10 minutes along Masarykova Street with a rolling luggage and backpack combined. In my opinion, this city should be visited during Easter (And you must try their green StaroBrno beer!!!) or Christmas looks to be fun but I've never been here during any other holidays then Easter time. Do NOT hesitate to wander outside of the main area of Brno Center because locals are very friendly and helpful, most of them are very curious of the visitors!!!

Everyone has heard of Prague but not many people know about this fun city called Brno (Brünn). Welcome to the second largest city in Czech Republic and the capital of Moravian region. Brno has the second largest university in Czech. Brno has the second largest population in the country. Google up on history of Brno from Spilberk Castle, Villa Tugendhat, Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, Liberty Square and Cabbage Market. Best of all, there are hardly any tourists!!! And no money exchange scam!!! This city has more local vibe, which I really enjoy. There are events happening all the time, so please check the calendar. Celebration of Easter and Christmas are very big in this city from folk music, dance, art and beautiful architectures.I highly recommend this city on your list if you are every in Czech Republic.

Keep the Adventure and Curiosity Alive!

Brno is a city in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic. Located at the confluence of the Svitava and Svratka rivers, Brno has about 380,000 inhabitants, making it the second-largest city in the Czech Republic after the capital, Prague, and one of the 100 largest cities of the EU. The Brno metropolitan area has more than 600,000 inhabitants. Brno is the former capital city of Moravia and the political and cultural hub of the South Moravian Region. Another cultural tradition is an international fireworks competition, Ignis Brunensis, that attracts tens of thousands of daily visitors. The most visited sights of the city include the Špilberk castle and fortress and the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul on Petrov hill, two medieval buildings that dominate the cityscape and are often depicted as its traditional symbols. The other large preserved castle near the city is Veveří Castle by Brno Reservoir. Another architectural monument of Brno is the functionalist Villa Tugendhat which has been included on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. One of the natural sights nearby is the Moravian Karst.
The city is a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network and has been designated as a City of Music in 2017.
