Top 15 VALAIS / Wallis SWITZERLAND – Best Attractions / Places / Things to do [Travel Guide]
The Canton of Valais / Wallis is one of Switzerland’s most touristy and fascinating regions. It is well-known due to the world-famous Matterhorn, the villages of Zermatt and Saas Fee and the many other skiing resorts. However, the Canton of Valais / Wallis offers way more than these: There are plenty of other attractions such as dams, villages, mountain tops, panoramas, zip lines, lakes, funiculars, glaciers museums, thermal baths, hiking trails, bisses, castles and train lines. This video summarizes the Top 15 attractions in brief, including all the necessary information one needs when planning his/her trip to the Canton of Valais / Wallis.
A highlight is definitely Zermatt with the Gornergrat and the panorama up to the Matterhorn. Furthermore, Zermatt is a wonderful village to visit. The Aletsch Glacier is also a place one shall not miss when visiting the canton of Valais. It's the largest glacier of the Alps. Wonderful is going up to the Eggishorn for the sunrise tour in July/August. The Aletsch Glacier is going to glow in a beautiful golden color. The old town of Sion is very stunning: Italian vibes in the Canton of Valais. Very much alive and apparently a foodie lab! Thus, do not miss to take your dinner there: Hérens beef, valaisans tomatoes and apricots are local specialities. Also visit the 2 castles of Sion. The Pierre Gianadda Foundation is considered to be one of Switzerland's top museums. The museum hosts a brilliant collection of paintings (Cézanne, Picasso and Mathys), old cars and roman artifacts. A trip up to the Mont-Fort near the village of Verbier is another highlight of Valais / Wallis. The 360° panorama up there allows you to see the Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn... on your way down, better take the zip line: It's going to be very thrilling! At Martigny, you may also visit the Barryland museum. It's a foundation that takes care of the Barry dog breed; one of Switzerland's national animals. It's a very family friendly attraction. Saas-Fee is a beautiful village to visit, surely because of it's many glaciers. The Metro Alpin up to the Mittelallalin and the ice pavilion are a highlight. Take a break at the baths of Leukerbad. This is premium wellness up in the Swiss Alps! Consider bathing at the Hotels of the Thermal bath of Leukerbad village. Really nice is also the Grande Dixence dam, the largest dam of Switzerland. Very thrilling is the zipline just along the dam! The underground Lake at Saint-Léonard is considered being one of Switzerland's most unique natural treasures. It's a great attraction to visit during rainy weather. The dam at Emosson with the world's steepest funicular and the panoramic train is another hidden gem attraction of Valais. Visit it and enjoy a brilliant vista over Mont-Blanc! Relax at the Lake of Champex-Lac, one of the best lakes one could visit in Switzerland. Pure nature and few people. The Bisse de Clavau is a serene hiking trail in the middle of the vineyards above Sion. From there you may enjoy a great view over the Rhone valley and the Swiss Alps. The Stockalper palace of Brig is a place for people who love to visit medieval heritage places. It's a castle with beautiful arcardes. Not the glacier express but the steam railway train over the Furkapass are considered the most stunning trainline one can take in the canton of Valais / Wallis. Take a journey back to the past and experience what it means to travel with class! City of Sion, Switzerland
Sion (German: Sitten) is a city in the canton of Valais in Switzerland.
From Zurich you can take the train to Bern and Visp. Travel time is 2 hours and 30 minutes.
The Population is about 35.000. 82 % of the people speak French as their first language.
Sion is situated in a dry and suny area of Switzerland.
Landmarks of the city are the two hills with the Valère Basilica and Tourbillon Castle.
The Town hall (Hôtel de ville) is at 12 Rue du Grand Pont in the old town. Other sights you can see in the video are Notre dame du Glarier and Tour de Sorciers (Sorcerers‘ Tower).
Don’t miss the big place: Place de la Planta with the Palais du Gouvernement
Around Sion there are many terraced vineyards.

In this video, we’ll be focusing our travels along the German side where we spent a couple of days enjoying what the destination has to offer.
We’ll first take you on a foodie biking tour departing from Radolfzell and touring the Höri Peninsula where we’ll try all sorts of fresh seasonal foods. We’ll spend a bit of time exploring the city of Konstanz on foot. We’ll then hop on a ferry and cross Lake Constance from west to east, enjoying the scenery along the way. Plus, when we arrive in Lindau, we’ll take you on a self-guided wine tour where we’ll hike and enjoy a picnic in a vineyard.

ZERMATT in Switzerland: The MOST SCENIC skiing village of the alps
Join my tour through Zermatt in Switzerland and it's highlights - my best tipps for one of the finest destinations of the alps for wintersports with possibilities to ski year round and a car-free fairytale village.
Have you ever been dreaming of a real winter wonderland? Of a place where glaciers cover part of the mountains, where the wind dances with clouds and where snow wraps the rocky peaks like a soft blanket? This place exists in a valley in Switzerland. Welcome to Zermatt - a car- free village in the Swiss mountains.
After taking the Lötschberg car train from Kandersteg to Goppenstein we left our vehicle in Täsch - to approach car free Zermatt with it's customized electric vehicles. We rented an apartment in the quarter Winkelmatt (close to the cablecar that goes to Trockener Steg / Zermatt Glacier Paradies).
Here are my favorite things to do in Zermatt:
- Ski the breathtaking slopes
- Enjoy the view on Matterhorn, one of the most famous mountains in the world!
- Have lunch in a mountain hut at the sunny terrace of a restaurant and try Swiss Rösti or the speciality of canton vallais - the Käseschnitte
- Cross the border to Italy on skis!
- Discover the old town of Zermatt with its 500 year old barns and traditional houses
- Shop at idyllic Bahnhofstrasse in Zermatt Downtown
- Hike the surrounding mountains of Zermatt (e.g. to the cross over Zermatt, from where you have a fantastic view!)
- visit the highest viewing plattform of Eruope and the alps on 3883 meters altitude and spot 38 4000 meter high peaks and 14 glaciers in the surrounding mountains

Flying drones over the village Zermatt and the skiing area is strictly forbidden due to the close helicopter airports and swiss drone regulations! I operated my drone with a special permit from Air Zermatt.

What to do in January in Switzerland? January is the month where you get to experience winter wonderland in Switzerland! It is usually cold and foggy at lower altitudes, but if you head up to the mountains in the Swiss Alps, you get to experience sunshine and paradise. In January you can do all kind of winter activities, such as skiing, snowboarding, sledging or simply enjoying the beautiful nature in and around the Swiss villages. Events are rare at this time of year and the ones that are are often in ski resorts. So if you want to experience a ski race, then Adelboden or Wengen (below Jungfrau) are perfect for you during this month.
