Olten – a charming small Swiss town

The delightful town of Olten lies on the banks of the River Aare, and a little to the south of the Jura Mountains. It is a great place to visit by train, being only 30 minutes from Zurich, Bern, Basel and Lucerne. My film shows the pedestrianised streets of the old part, which forms the centre of the town, with its attractive shops by day and lively nightlife by night. Many of the old-style Swiss buildings like the Rathskeller are occupied by hotels, bars and restaurants – for this is a town that attracts a lot of conferences. The film shows some of the peaceful squares and interesting churches, towers and fortresses to be explored, along with the fascinating roofed-in wooden foot bridge. The jolly background music just emphasises how pleasant it is to live in these small traditional Swiss towns.

BASEL - Switzerland Travel Guide | Around The World

Basel is one of the important cities of Switzerland.

One of Switzerland's underrated tourist destinations, Basel has a beautiful medieval old town centre, a vibrant Carnival, and several world class art museums built by architects like Renzo Piano, Mario Botta and Herzog & De Meuron. Basel is also rich in architecture old and new, with a Romanesque Münster (cathedral), a Renaissance Rathaus (town hall), and various examples of high quality contemporary architecture, including more buildings by Herzog & De Meuron, Richard Meier, Diener & Diener, and various others.

Located in the Dreiländereck (three countries' corner), Basel is a gateway to the Swiss Jura mountains and nearby cities of Zürich and Lucerne, as well as the neighbouring French region of Alsace and the German Black Forest. If interested in a trip to the country side visit Sissach a nice little town about 20 minutes from Basel. There are a number of things to see and do if you have a few days to spend.

Most of the old town attractions in Basel are in a walkable area between the Basel Zoo (just south of the Basel SBB train station) and the Rhine. Since most stores are closed on Sundays, it is a good day to plan to see one of the many museums, which are usually open. Basel and surroundings have over 20 museums, and many of these have a free opening hour at the end of the day.

Basel prides itself on having more than two dozen museums, covering a wide range of subjects, from art - emphasized below - and architecture to cartoons and even doll houses.

Basler Fasnacht
This is Basel's version of Carnival , and a premier event during the year, lasting for three straight days, beginning on the Monday following Ash Wednesday. Don't confuse it with the more raucous festivals in traditionally Catholic areas, such as the German Rhineland (Karneval) and Munich (Fasching), or Carnival in Rio or Mardi Gras in New Orleans. It can actually have a kind of somber feel, although with a distinct poetry and subtle humour, which you may learn to like. Many locals are dead-serious about it, often preparing their costumes and practicing their skills on the traditional musical instruments (military drums and piccolo flutes) throughout most of the year. If you are not a Basler, avoid dressing up silly or putting on make-up, as this is neither customary nor appreciated by locals - who mostly prefer to stay among themselves for what many consider the three loveliest days of the year.

Basel has a thriving restaurant and café (see below Cafés) culture, and the streets of the old town are lined with outdoor seating in the summer. Not all restaurants in Basel accept credit cards (though an increasing number do). If in doubt check first. As in most of Europe, tipping is not a requirement. It is common (but not universal), to round up to the nearest 10 or 20 Franks, for example by refusing the change from a note.

If you plan on staying in Basel during Fasnacht, BaselWorld , or Art | Basel be sure to book your room well in advance. Most places are booked solid during these times.

If interested in a trip to the country side visit Sissach a nice little town about 20 minutes from Basel. There are a number of things to see and do if you have a few days to spend.

This is the standard mode of travel for many within the city. Old Basel isn't very large and there are many narrow and winding side streets with incredible slopes. Basel has an extensive tram (light rail) and bus network.

The city itself has 19 quarters:

Grossbasel (Greater Basel):
1 Altstadt Grossbasel
2 Vorstädte
3 Am Ring
4 Breite
5 St. Alban
6 Gundeldingen
7 Bruderholz
8 Bachletten
9 Gotthelf
10 Iselin
11 St. Johann
Kleinbasel (Lesser Basel):
12 Altstadt Kleinbasel
13 Clara
14 Wettstein
15 Hirzbrunnen
16 Rosental
17 Matthäus
18 Klybeck
19 Kleinhüningen

Since most stores are closed on Sundays, it is a good day to plan to see one of the many museums, which are usually open. Basel and surroundings have over 20 museums, and many of these have a free opening hour at the end of the day.

Münster and Pfalz. Walk up cobbled streets and alleys from Marktplatz or Mittlere Brücke to Münsterplatz (Cathedral square) to see Basel's Münster (cathedral). Elisabethen, Elisabethenstrasse. St. Elizabeth is relatively underrated in Basel guides and maps given its historical significance. Marktplatz, Market square. Fresh fruits and vegetables, breads and pastries, flowers are available each working day. Considerably more vendors on Saturday morning.

The Gates to the Walled City. A (third) ring of fortifications around the whole old city was constructed after the great earthquake of 1356, to provide security for the then roughly 20,000 inhabitants of Basel. A number of these gates can still be seen at the perimeter of what used to be the medieval city: Spalentor

Basel prides itself on having more than two dozen museums, covering a wide range of subjects, from art - emphasized below - and architecture to cartoons and even doll houses. Among others, there is the Anatomical Museum of the University Basel, Berri-Villen and Museum of Ancient Art Basel and Ludwig Collection, Former Franciscan Barefoot Order Church and Basel Historical Museum, Company Archive of Novartis, Haus zum Kirschgarten which is part of the Basel Historical Museum, Historic Archive Roche and Industrial Complex Hoffmann-La Roche, Jewish Museum of Switzerland, Caricature & Cartoon Museum Basel, Karl Barth-Archive, Kleines Klingental (Lower Klingen Valley) with Museum Klingental, Art Museum of Basel, hosting the world's oldest art collection accessible to the public, Natural History Museum of Basel and the Museum of Cultures Basel, Museum of Modern Art Basel with the E. Hoffmann collection, Museum Jean Tinguely Basel, Music Museum, Pharmacy Historical Museum of the University of Basel, Poster Collection of the School for Design (Schule für Gestaltung), Swiss Business Archives, Sculpture Hall, Sports Museum of Switzerland, Archives of the Canton of Basel-Stadt, UBS AG Corporate Archives, University Library with manuscripts and music collection, Zoological Garden (Zoologischer Garten).

???? Nice and short cab ride round trip (Switzerland | Thurbo S41 Bülach - Winterthur - Bülach)

Welcome to this short branch line, usually known as Dettenberg-Line, named after the 1.8km long tunnel that we'll see right after the start. It is a direct connection from Winterthur to the northwest, once even used for direct trains Winterthur - Basel. Nowadays there are no long-distrance trains anymore, but it is still frequently used by freight trains and the commuter train that we're in. It's a shorter trip this time, so we made it a round trip. Sit back and enjoy both directions of this short but interesting and beautiful route through the countryside!

★ 4K ????????Longest funicular in Switzerland: Montana - Sierre Cab ride [06.2020]

Here we have one of the longest funiculars in the world. I've only found one that is longer. The Sierre - Montana funicular, originally a 2 stage funicular built in 1911. In 1997 the two were combined into 1 funicular, making it Switzerland's longest, at 4.192 Km with an altitude gain of 931m meters.

Many of you won't be too pleased about the weather - I myself like seeing routes in all types of conditions and I know there are others of you who do too. The only unfortunate part is how seldom the windscreen wiper wipes. I have since been able to film both directions in full sunlight which will be coming in a future video.

Among these tunnels, The Sonnenberg Tunnel was the world's largest civilian nuclear fallout shelter, designed to protect 20,000 civilians in the eventuality of war or disaster.

SCENIC SWISS TRAIN RIDE | Zürich to Geneva Airport with SBB

One lovely summer evening I got on the SBB IC1 train from Zurich Hauptbahnhof and went to Geneva Airport. I made the trip in 2nd class and paid around €74, a last minute booking. For just under three hours, I got to see fantastically beautiful views of Switzerland's rolling landscape and magical Alps. The most beautiful part was of course the one along Lake Geneva at dusk. It turned out better than I imagined.
