Lake Garda Day Trip! - Sirmione & Desenzano | Lake Garda, Italy | Full Tour

During our stay in Milan we took a day trip to Lake Garda.

We visited Sirmione & Desenzano.

Lake Garda is the largest Lake in Italy, and known for its crystal clear water. It's located in Northern Italy, on the edge of the Dolomites and between three regions, Veneto, Lombardy, and Trentino. The lake's western and southwestern shores are in Lombardy, the northern shore is in Trentino, and Veneto is on the east and southeast. It’s located halfway between Verona and Brescia, and Milan and Venice.

In Lake Garda, we visited the AQVA Boutique Hotel

Ate in Sirmione at: Ristorante L’Accanto Pizzeria.

Lake Garda is really big, so make sure if you are visiting multiple locations, that you give yourself enough time.

Sirmione Italy at LAKE GARDA ???????? Things To Do and See ????

The Lake Garda peninsula town of Sirmione Italy is a beautiful but crowded tourist area in northern Italy. We really enjoyed Sirmione Grotte di Catullo and the Scaligero Castle. Fun fact... this beautiful castle is slowly sinking into the lake!

Afterward a day of exploring Sirmione Italy, we had pizza at nearby Ristorante Pizzeria Al Braciere.

Top 10 Places Around the Italian Lakes

Top 10 Places Around the Italian Lakes according to DK

10. Sirmione and Southern Lake Garda
Sirmione is a comune in the province of Brescia. It is bounded by the comunes of Desenzano del Garda (Lombardy) and Peschiera del Garda in the province of Verona and the region of Veneto. It has a historical centre which is located on the Sirmio peninsula that divides the lower part of Lake Garda.

9. Lake Idro and the Valvestino
Lake Idro is an Italian prealpine lake of glacial origin situated largely within the Province of Brescia and in part in Trentino. The lake is surrounded by wooded mountains. The shoreline of some 24 km is shared between four communes: Idro (the frazioni Crone and Belprato), from which the lake takes its name, Anfo, Bagolino (fraz. Ponte Caffaro) and Bondone (fraz. Baitoni).

8. Bergamo
Bergamo is a pretty town of some 120,000 people nestling in the foothills of the Alps. Widely acclaimed as a city of rare beauty, Bergamo is famous for its wealth of artistic treasures and enchanting medieval atmosphere. It is a real life tale of two cities: Città Bassa, the busy and modern lower city, and Città Alta, the upper city with its rich heritage of art and history.

7. Centro Lago and its Villages
At the centre of Lake Como -- the Centro Lago -- where the three branches of the lake meet, stands Bellagio, with its pretty village centre of stepped streets

6. Verona
Verona is a cityin north-eastern Italy's Veneto region most famous as the setting for Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Though close to the more popular tourist destination of Venice, many people consider Verona a more relaxed and pleasant place to visit. There are many tourists, but the number of tourists per square meter is lower.

5. Milan
Milan is financially the most important city in Italy. In essence, for a tourist, what makes Milan interesting compared to other places is that the city is truly more about the lifestyle of enjoying worldly pleasures: a paradise for shopping, football, opera, and nightlife. Milan remains the marketplace for Italian fashion -- fashion aficionados, supermodels and international paparazzi descend upon the city twice a year for its spring and autumn fairs.

4. Como
Como has always been an area of intense activity, as it has acted over the centuries as a crossing point between Central Europe and the Mediterranean. Built by the Romans at the end of the Piedmont road, it was an important communication point between Rome and its northern territories. In more recent times Como became famed for its silk.

3. Orta San Giulio
Orta San Giulio is a town and comune in the Province of Novara in the Italian region of Piedmont, located about 100 km northeast of Turin and about 40 km northwest of Novara. The town itself is built on a promontory which juts out from the eastern bank of Lake Orta close to Isola San Giulio, an island which also falls within the municipal boundaries.

2. Northern Lake Maggiore
With a length of 68 km and a coastline of over 150 km the glacial Lake Maggiore stretches from the Swiss canton Ticino in the north into the two major Italian regions Piedmont and Lombardy. Since the climate is mild year-round, the area is filled with Mediterranean vegetation and exotic plants. Surrounded by beautiful lake shore towns and villages with lush botanical gardens, amazing islands and a backdrop of Swiss mountain peaks the Lake Maggiore has become a top tourist destination, mainly for central and northern Europe tourists.

1. Isola Bella
Isola Bella (lit. 'beautiful island') is one of the Borromean Islands of Lago Maggiore in north Italy. The island is situated in the Borromean Gulf 400 metres from the lakeside town of Stresa. Isola Bella is 320 metres long by 400 metres wide and is divided between the Palace, its Italianate garden, and a small fishing village.

Places to see in ( Sirmione - Italy )

Places to see in ( Sirmione - Italy )

Sirmione is a resort town on the southern bank of Lake Garda, in northern Italy. It’s known for its thermal baths and the Rocca Scaligera, an ancient castle overlooking the lake. Set at the tip of a peninsula, the Archaeological Site of Grotte di Catullo encompasses a Roman villa, a museum and olive trees. Just below the ruins is the rocky Jamaica Beach. The church of San Pietro in Mavino is decorated with frescoes.

Sirmione is one of the most popular holiday resorts on the shores of Lake Garda in northern Italy. The small historic town is located on the tip of a long peninsula protruding from the southern shore of the lake between Desenzano del Garda and Peschiera. Sirmione has thermal springs and was a spa destination even in Roman times - you can visit some impressive Roman ruins at the end of the promontory. The town is in the province of Brescia, in the Lombardy region of Italy.

Sirmione is a pleasant place to stay, with lots of comfortable hotels, some in the town centre and others spread along the green pensinsula. They're designed for relaxing stays, with sun terraces, pools or private beaches. The town itself offers short strolls, a couple of tourist attractions and lake views.

Although Sirmione is very attractive, its small historical heart gets choked with tourists. For atmosphere, you're really better off visiting out of season. Almost all the businesses in Sirmione are aimed at tourists - naughty postcards, souvenirs, ice creams - and unfortunately most of the restaurants are also tourist standard. We found a very nice spot with reasonable prices however, where we were able to sit outdoors and enjoy a good meal: the Caffè Margherita.

The historical centre of Sirmione is pedestrianised; its narrow winding lanes busy with tourists. Orienting yourself can be confusing, but the town is so small that you can't get lost for long. Sirmione is picturesque throughout, but its two main tourist attractions are the castle and the Roman ruins. A panoramic walk (signposted) leads out around the the promontory, and on a clear day you can enjoy great views over the lake and towards the mountains in the north.

The town is dominated by a thirteenth-century castle, the Rocca Scaligera, defended by a moat patrolled by swans and ducks. It is a real fairytale castle from the exterior. As our boat approached Sirmione recently, a little girl cried in Italian 'It's Cinderella's castle!'. The castle - a fortress, really - is open to the public. The interior is not much more than an empty shell, but visitors can explore the ramparts, admire views over Lake Garda and climb the tower. It's a good treat for children.

The ruined Roman villa - Villa Romana - out at the end of the headland is large and impressive. The poet Catullus had a family home in the Sirmione area, so historically this site has been associated with him, and known as the Grotte di Catullo ('caves of Catullus'). However the villa is of a slightly later date and of a scale and grandeur suggesting a very important and rich owner. The ruins (closed Mondays) are in a lovely setting surrounded by lake, with lizards scuttling through olive groves. Visitors can wander through the ruined walls and admire archaeological finds - including a charming carving of rabbits - in the small museum.

Sirmione is connected to Lake Garda's other destinations by ferries which depart from a jetty in the centre of town. A ticket kiosk is close by. The town is on a bus route between Brescia and Verona, so is easy to reach from those towns, each of which has a budget airport. The nearest railway stations are in the neighbouring lakeshore towns of Peschiera and Desenzano del Garda. You can catch the bus or a ferry from either of these towns to Sirmione.

Lake Garda in the north of Italy, near the Alps, is the largest lake in the country and it has two dozen beautiful villages all the way around it. One of the most interesting is the fortified town of Sirmione. The first thing you see upon arrival is the impressive medieval castle. You enter the town, crossing the drawbridge, and through a fortified gate, a dramatic way to begin our visit.
Later, in the program will take you inside the castle and climb to the top of that tower for a grand view. But first, we're going to walk all around in the village and enjoy its charming pedestrian lanes. Right away, we're at the Castle Piazza, one of several charming little piazzas in this village, which also has some beautiful lanes for strolling, shopping and eating.
Interesting little alleyways, tunneling through the buildings, connect the various streets and piazzas, which adds another element to the charm of this place. And shoppers will find many tantalizing opportunities. Sirmione is on a narrow peninsulas jutting into the lake. So you'll have some nice waterfront strolls. And yes, there's a beach at the peninsula's north end. There are ruins of an ancient Roman villa, one of the largest Roman archeological sites in northern Italy.
As you'll see after we visit Sirmione in town. The castle and town scene from above gives you a nice overview and you can see how compact the town is. Just 400 meters long and 200 meters wide, with several little waterfront piazzas that are quite inviting along with charming pedestrian lanes, as we'll show you in a moment. The town is on a narrow four kilometer long peninsula that juts out into the lake.
It's been compared to a jewel on a scepter because of that unique location. It played a special role in defense of the lake, as we'll discuss later when we get inside the castle. Simply strolling around, enjoying these beautiful buildings and the location on the lake is probably one of the most enjoyable activities, as in your visit to Sirmione.
Along with that fantastic Italian cuisine, there are a handful of these beautiful piazzas lined with restaurants that go right down to the waterfront. Gives you a chance to go out on the dock and maybe take a boat ride, or just enjoy the scenic vistas along the lakeshore. The ancient Romans were here 2000 years ago, including the poet Catullus, and 100 years after him, a great villa was constructed in the ancient Roman style.
We'll see it later on a boat ride that you could catch from this pier, offering tours of Sirmione Peninsula. It's always enjoyable to watch the ducks and swans swimming around by the dock here, looking for some food, establishing the pecking order. This was photographed in the month of October, when the weather is still very nice. It was never cold, hardly any rain and no crowd.
