10 Things not to do in The Netherlands

What are the don'ts of visiting The Netherlands? In this video, we'll be discussing 10 Things not to do in the Netherlands. We'll give you an insight of what mistakes and etiquette faux pas are best avoided when visiting this unique country. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy as we provide you with some essential knowledge and useful tips on how to experience the Netherlands without making any inappropriate social blunders.
1. Don’t call it Holland
Ah, the great debate – why don't call it Holland? It's a question that has been around for generations, and one that continues to divide people even to this day. To some, calling the Netherlands 'Holland' is an outdated practice; to others, it’s simply part of their culture. It is one of those things not to do in Netherlands.
It all comes down to geography: historically speaking, ‘Holland’ only referred specifically to two provinces in the country: North and South Holland. Yes, these are two very important parts of the country but there are also ten other provinces. Making it twelve in total.
Calling every single province ‘Holland’ would be incorrect as therefore not everyone from The Netherlands is from those specific two places!
2. Don’t assume everybody speaks perfect English
The Netherlands is a tiny European country with numerous native speakers of different languages. If you're going there, don't assume everyone speaks English. It is one of the don’ts of visiting the Netherlands that you should definitely consider.
Most Dutch people speak English as a second language (especially in cities). But they may not always communicate with tourists. Travelers who speak English without trying Dutch may even offend locals.
It's also crucial to consider the Dutch's other languages, such as German and French, which would demand a different level of linguistic awareness to converse with locals. Mispronunciation is worse than blank stares in ordinary conversations!
3. Sidewalks are to walk, and bike lanes are for bikes
If you're planning to visit the Netherlands any time soon, there's something important that you need to remember - sidewalks are for walking and bike lanes are for biking! Now I know this seems like a no-brainer but it’s one of those things not to do in Netherlands.
It might seem strange that such a simple concept would even need mentioning but trust me; not adhering to these rules could have some serious consequences. After all, the Netherlands is considered the ‘bicycle capital of the world’ so that should give you an inkling as to how big cycling culture is here. In fact, did you know that there are more bicycles than people living in Amsterdam?
If you get into a tussle with one of these infamous two-wheelers, then believe me; you won't come off well! So, make sure that no matter where you go, keep away from those bike lanes and stick close by the sidewalk – it'll save any potential embarrassment or worse yet - accidents!
4. Netherlands is not Just Amsterdam
It's easy to get lost in the beauty of Amsterdam and forget that there is so much more to Netherlands!
Yes, it may be true that Holland is often associated with its beloved capital city—but don't forget Netherlands is made up of 12 provinces beyond just North Holland.

Slow travel vlog | London to Amsterdam train

In January I took the London to Amsterdam train for another slow travel vlog. In this video I show what travelling on the Eurostar to the Netherlands is like and compare it to flying. I also give a bit of history about the channel tunnel.

This is actually a sort of part one video because once I arrived in Amsterdam I carried on to Zurich on the new sleeper train. I’ll be uploading part two in two weeks from now.

I wanted to show how to get to Amsterdam by train because it’s one of the most popular destinations for people in the UK to travel to and not everyone knows just how easy it is to get the train. So I’m hoping that showing how much more convenient it is to travel by train will inspire others to choose slow travel over flying.

A few years ago I quit flying for holidays and since then whenever I go away I travel by land or sea, mainly by train or ferry.

If you’re interested in learning more about sustainable travel and seeing what other flight-free holidays look like I will be uploading more videos in the future which explore both.

For now though I hope you enjoy this video and see you soon!

LONDON TO BERLIN BY TRAIN | A Travelogue and Guide

For many reasons Berlin, the capital of Germany, is my favorite European City. So it's a trip I take often from the UK.
While it is quick and cheap to fly from London to Berlin, there are times you just want to relax, take your time and enjoy watching the European Cities and Countryside go by. So on occasion I take the train from London To Berlin as an alternative to flying.

This video is a Travelogue and a Guide for anyone who would like to take this alternative method of travel across Europe.

There is no direct train service from London to Berlin, this means we need to plan our own route using the various national networks. And I will show you the quickest and most direct routing in this video, which takes around 10 hours.
We will start in London St Pancras International Station, taking the only train that travels from the UK to the European Mainland - The Eurostar. The High Speed Eurostar travels under the sea through The Channel Tunnel.
We will then use the German National Railway, Deutsche Bahn(DB) Inter City Express (ICE) Trains to get to Berlin. Changing trains at Brussels Midi/Zuid (Brussels South) Station in Belgium. And then Köln Hauptbahnhof (Cologne Main Station) , finally arriving at Berlin Hauptbahnhof in the late afternoon.

I will be travelling First Class, so you can see the quality of First Class Carriages /Service. But the trains and route are exactly the same with 2nd or Economy Class seating.

ST. PANCRAS, LONDON & CENTRAL STATION, AMSTERDAM - Taking Eurostar from London to Amsterdam

St. Pancras station in London was quite a zoo. Disneyland-type lines. Central Station in Amsterdam was somewhat calmer. Eurostar train is one of the more practical ways to travel between London and Amsterdam.

BACKPACKING WITH KIDS - We took the train to Amsterdam - Dutch Adventure Part 1

We're the Family ByCycle, and we have wild adventures with kids and bikes.

Thinking of going backpacking across Europe with young children? At half term, October 2019, we set off from our home in the East Midlands of England and went for a week in the Netherlands with Ruth (6), Rhoda (5) and Baby Robert (6 months). In Part 1, we walk to the station, travel to London St Pancras and then take the Eurostar to Amsterdam, before finding our Youth Hostel (StayOkay) in the beautiful 'cycling city' of Utrecht. Watch to the end of the film to find out what happened when we went upstairs on a Dutch commuter train!

Why not leave us a comment with your experiences or questions about backpacking by train, with a baby! Remember to hit the notification bell to hear about Part 2 when we publish it!

We travelled from Wellingborough to London St Pancras with East Midlands Railway, one of the last places you can enjoy a silver-served breakfast on a scheduled train in Great Britain.

We used Eurostar's new direct service to Amsterdam (update - now direct from Amsterdam to London, as of October 2020, but services are reduced due to COVID-19) in 'Standard Premier' class, which is first class to all intents and purposes, and includes the food service shown in the film.

Finally we used Nederlandse Spoorwegen, Dutch state railways, to travel from Amsterdam to Utrecht, from where we started our week's cycling and railway field trip around the Netherlands for the half term holidays.

Join us for the rest of the journey, which will include the biggest bike park in the world, the Dutch National Railway Museum and the beautiful cities of the Low Countries.
