“Memories of Heroes” Sing Buri
Sing Buri is the home to the art, history, and culture nurtured by descendants of Sing Buri's heroes. Nang Yai (Shadow Puppets) in Sawang Arom Temple defines knowledge and painting skill of artists in the late Ayutthaya period. But if you want to travel back in time to the past, Ban Rajun Market is truly recommended to be on your list.

Ban Rachan Old-style Market - Great Day Trip From Bangkok - Singburi Thailand 2023

Singburi province is steeped in folklore and famous for the brave heroes of Bang Rachan who fended off the Burmese army against huge odds. This gives the area a great deal of historical importance to the Thai people.

The heroes of Bang Rachan were famously known for their self defense camp, which fended off the Burmese army with only a few soldiers and civilians. Thai’s all know the story as its taught in schools from a young age.

Bang Rachan Memorial Park and the Heroes of Khai Bang Rachan Monument pay tribute to the heroic villagers of Bang Rachan who bravely fought against the Burmese army in 1765. And in spite of being outnumbered by more than 10 to one, the Burmese soldiers had to make eight attacks before the Thai villagers were overrun due to their lack of weapons.

One vintage market in Bang Rachan takes visitors back to those days of glory. The Bang Rachan Old Style Market opened in 2016 to preserve the historical importance of Bang Rachan using period construction, costumes, tools, and settings as even the vendors dress up exactly like people from that period.

Visitors can even rent a Thai costume of their own with various styles to choose from. That way they can take pictures in the historical market setting or with the actor ‘warriors’ guarding the fictitious gate of Bang Rachan.

The market has vendors selling all of the Thai favorites as well as regional cuisine and local products. You can also see a reenactment of the famous battle where the actors perform on a stage next to the river.

Ban Rachan Old-style Market is located about 2-3 hours north of Bangkok in Singburi. There are many other things to see and do in this area making it a great day trip from the city.

Historic Wat Na Phra That With Drone Footage - Singburi Thailand 2023

Wat Na Phra That Ancient Ruin in Singburi

Originally, the villagers called this temple Wat Hua Mueang or Wat Sisa Mueang. In the reign of King Rama IV, the name was changed to its current name of Wat Na Phra That.

It is assumed that this area was the location of the old city of Sing Buri and that the temple was located along the Chak Si River.

The most important part of this temple is the Phra Prang, about 8 meters high, made in the form of a Naga Garuda flanked by a beast holding a club of the setting sun. It is believed to have been built in the early Ayutthaya style. Many of the designs in the prang were common in that era like the statue of Garuda and a demon holding a mace.

To the east of the pagoda there is the royal hall. West is the Ubosot and with many round pagodas lined up. This is a characteristic of the architecture of the late Ayutthaya period.

There are many pavilions, brick kilns and cement mixing plants. From the study of archeology it is assumed that the construction started in the early Ayutthaya period. The current temple was probably built on an older ruin with laterite stones being on the site. These were common in Khmer construction. The Prang was also much larger in the past before the many renovations that it has seen.

The temple was abandoned due to wars in this area when the Burmese invaded and captured Ayutthaya in 1767.

The Fine Arts Department registered it as a historical site on March 8, 1935, and in the years 1999-2000, the government excavated and restored Wat Na Phra That for conservation and promotion to tourists.
