Dandong: Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge and Broken Bridge

YPT's North Korea Tours Manager Rowan Beard takes you along the waterfront of Dandong and for a tour of the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge and the Broken Bridge.

Dandong, China (formerly Andong prior to 1945) is a city of 1 million inhabitants, situated on the Yalu River in China's southeast Liaoning province. Dandong is unique in that it is China's largest border city on the Sino-North Korean border, facing the DPRK border city of Sinuiju. China is responsible for around 40% of North Korea's export trade and a large portion of that trade passes through Dandong to Sinuiju and vice versa.

As many as 5 million Chinese tourists visit Dandong annually to catch a glimpse into life in the Hermit Kingdom, with upwards of 150,000 of those Chinese tourists travelling across the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge to visit Sinuiju.

Dandong is well off the beaten track when it comes to tourism. For those who travel here this is their only chance to have a glimpse into life of the Hermit Kingdom. For the high majority this is as close as they get to North Korea. Local Chinese companies have set up DPRK-themed boat tours, photo opportunities with Korean costumes, as well as North Korean goods such as stamps, cigarettes, alcohol, and clothing.

One of the biggest attractions of Dandong is the Broken Bridge. Located directly next to Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge, the Broken Bridge was bombed by the U.S Military during the Korean War. Though it was repaired several times during the war, the DPRK decided not to repair the Broken Bridge for good at the end of the war, leaving it broken as a reminder of the destruction caused by the Americans during the war.

Dandong: Exploring North Korea From The Yalu River

The Yalu river (Known in Korean is Amonkgang) runs 790km along along the border of China and North Korea. In both Chinese and Korean its name means “duck green,” which refers to the color of the river. Visitors to the Yalu are often struck by the fact that China and North Korea are only a few meters from each other in some places along the river.

In the early years of both the PRC and DPRK, North Korea was perhaps the most industrialized country in East Asia, owed in part to heavy industrialization by Japan during its occupation of Korea (1910-1945), as well as heavy Soviet investment and subsidies after 1945. At that time, the North Korean side of the river was the more developed and it was common for ethnic Koreans living in China to return to North Korea for better living conditions.

Since the 1970s, however, the Chinese side of the Yalu has seen tremendous growth. Today, the Chinese border city of Dandong is bustling with traffic and construction whereas the opposite North Korean city, Sinuiju, remains – shall we say – unspoiled by bourgeoisie and capitalist ideologies.

As we covered in our last video on the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge and Broken Bridge, Dandong is a popular destination for tourists wanting a closer look at China's enigmatic neighbor. Along the river near the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge, there are a number of companies offering boat tours which will can bring you a little nearer to the North Korean side of the river where one can see details about the daily lives of Koreans. In this video, we decided to check out one of the Chinese-North Korea Boat Tours ourselves and to take you along for the ride.

THE SAFEST WAY TO LOOK AT NORTH KOREA IS FROM CHINA AND THE YALU RIVER

Despite our apprehensions as Americans, we rolled the dice on a tour of the North Korea coastline on the Yalu River. It ended up being a great experience. We got to see real life in North Korea. We got the boat ride in Dandong, China for 50 CNY.

For a more complete report of this trip visit:

And to see North Korea from the DMZ visit:

I went to the border of China and North Korea | Dandong

In today's video I visit Dandong which is a city in China that borders the North Korean city of Sinuiju. I thought it would be interesting to experience the North Korean Border during a weekend trip to Shenyang. There are some other places you can visit as well in China that bring you closer but this was most convenient. Also being in the Liaoning Province I had to grab some DongBei (NorthEast) food.

My LIFE in NORTH KOREA - a TRIP to PYONGYANG!

North Korea has been on my list for years and finally I made it. This short VLOG should give you a little impression of what it is like to travel to the DPRK or better known as North Korea.

I went on a 3-days tour starting in Dandong, China. I went with Young Pioneer Tours and it was an incredible experience.

I don't have an opinion on whether it was staged or not, whether they are bad or good, or how I feel about the whole trip. I went to the DPRK as a tourist and for a cultural exchange. From human to human, without a political agenda.

North Korea: Driving in Sinuiju (신의주) April 2017 新義州をドライブ

From my trip to North Korea in April 2017 2017年4月の北朝鮮旅行から
ブログ:

map of North Korea

North Korea, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), is a country in East Asia, constituting the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. It borders China and Russia to the north, at the Yalu (Amnok) and Tumen rivers, and South Korea to the south at the Korean Demilitarized Zone. Its western border is formed by the Yellow Sea, while its eastern border is defined by the Sea of Japan. North Korea, like its southern counterpart, claims to be the legitimate government of the entire peninsula and adjacent islands. Pyongyang is the country's capital and largest city.

In 1910, Korea was annexed by the Empire of Japan. In 1945, after the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II, Korea was divided into two zones along the 38th parallel, with the north occupied by the Soviet Union and the south occupied by the United States. Negotiations on reunification failed, and in 1948, separate governments were formed: the socialist DPRK in the north, and the capitalist Republic of Korea in the south. The Korean War began in 1950, with an invasion by North Korea, and lasted to 1953. The Korean Armistice Agreement brought about a ceasefire and established a demilitarized zone (DMZ), but no formal peace treaty was ever signed.

According to Article 1 of the state constitution, North Korea is an independent socialist state. It holds elections, though they have been described by independent observers as sham elections, as North Korea is a totalitarian dictatorship, with an elaborate cult of personality around the Kim dynasty. The Workers' Party of Korea, led by a member of the ruling family, is the dominant party and leads the Democratic Front for the Reunification of Korea, of which all political officers are required to be members.

According to Article 3 of the constitution, Juche is the official ideology of North Korea. The means of production are owned by the state through state-run enterprises and collectivized farms. Most services—such as healthcare, education, housing, and food production—are subsidized or state-funded. From 1994 to 1998, North Korea suffered a famine that resulted in the deaths of between 240,000 and 420,000 people, and the population continues to suffer from malnutrition. North Korea occupies the northern portion of the Korean Peninsula, lying between latitudes 37° and 43°N, and longitudes 124° and 131°E. It covers an area of 120,540 square kilometers (46,541 sq mi). To its west are the Yellow Sea and Korea Bay, and to its east lies Japan across the Sea of Japan.

Early European visitors to Korea remarked that the country resembled a sea in a heavy gale because of the many successive mountain ranges that crisscross the peninsula. Some 80 percent of North Korea is composed of mountains and uplands, separated by deep and narrow valleys. All of the Korean Peninsula's mountains with elevations of 2,000 meters (6,600 ft) or more are located in North Korea. The highest point in North Korea is Paektu Mountain, a volcanic mountain with an elevation of 2,744 meters (9,003 ft) above sea level.[95] Considered a sacred place by North Koreans, Mount Paektu holds significance in Korean culture and has been incorporated in the elaborate folklore and personality cult around the Kim dynasty.

North Korea follows Songun, or military first policy, for its Korean People's Army. It possesses nuclear weapons, and is the country with the second highest number of military and paramilitary personnel, with a total of 7.769 million active, reserve, and paramilitary personnel, or approximately 30% of its population. Its active duty army of 1.28 million soldiers is the fourth-largest in the world, consisting of 5% of its population. A 2014 inquiry by the United Nations into abuses Pyongyang 평양직할시 (Chung-guyok)

First Tourist Visit to Sinuiju, North Korea (DPRK)

On May 20th Koryo Tour's General Manager Simon Cockerell was invited to be the first western tourist to visit the North Korean border city of Sinuiju, located just 900 metres across the Yalu river from its Chinese counterpart Dandong. Sinuiju is a strategically important city which sees a large amount of Chinese trade with the DPRK passing through its border points and has long been open for Chinese visitors to make day trips.

Koryo Tours has been working for many years to make it possible for non-Chinese tourists to visit the city I have been trying to get to Sinuiju for the last ten years and have passed it countless times on the train from Pyongyang to Beijing (we were once stranded for an afternoon in Sinuiju in 2004 when the international train could not take us into Pyongyang) but this trip was the first proper tour and a highlight in my travels in the country. Really great people and a good bit of interaction with the guides and locals

We were very honoured to be thanked for all our hard work which made this possible by the DPRK tourism authorities in Pyongyang last Friday and by the local travel company in Sinuiju just yesterday. We hope that the opening of Sinuiju to western tourists continues the run of new sites for tourists to visit in North Korea, and will continue to push for greater access and more areas that visitors can go to.

You can now travel to Sinuiju with Koryo Tours, for full details see here:

So if you're looking for an exciting weekend break, or a day trip to another world then come along with the only DPRK travel experts around. We've worked long and hard to open up new parts of North Korea to tourists and we invite anyone wanting a new experience to get in contact with us on info@koryogroup.com

Safest country in the world !!!! An Indian Tourist in North Korea | Pt 4

In the final part of my North Korean series you'll see me travel by train from Pyongyang to the border town of #Sinuiju. The highlight of the city was standing on the banks of the Yalu river separating China and DPRK & a visit to the local kindergarden

The North Korean border town of Sinuiju is located just 900 meters across the Yalu river from its Chinese counterpart, Dandong. While most tourists who exit the country from the train will have passed through Sinuiju, it was only opened for Western tourists to visit from 2013.

The city remains very popular with Chinese tourists who visit the city for a day trip
