Djebel Boukornine (Tunisia) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Djebel Boukornine in Tunisia.
Seemingly endless dense forests extend across the hills of the Djebel Boukornine National Park. They are the green lungs of the Tunisian metropolis of Tunis that is located a few kilometres away. From the forest covered hills of the nature reserve the view stretches to the outlying areas of the pulsating capital and to the Mediterranean. The region's mostly humid and warm Mediterranean climate promotes the prolific growth of vegetation as well as numerous wild flowers. The dense undergrowth of the forests that covers the hills offers protection to a large number of indigenous animals such as wild boar and mufflon. The area close to the summit of Djebel Boukornine is one of much historical significance. At a height of around five hundred and seventy-six metres are the remains of an old Saturn temple that was dedicated to the Two Horn God who protected the former city of Carthage. The Tunisian Dorsal Pass and the bordering north eastern ridge of the mighty Atlas Mountains can be seen from the hills of the national park.Tunisia contains a diverse variety of scenery in a relatively small area and both socially and culturally it is still strongly influenced by age old customs and traditions.

MAKTHAR, TUNISIA

Makthar is a town and archaeological site in Siliana Governorate, Tunisia.

Makthar was founded by the Berber Numidians as a defense post against Carthaginian expansion. At the end of the Third Punic War, it was settled by many Punic refugees after the Romans' destruction of Carthage in 146 bc. Under Roman rule, it obtained the status of a free city under Julius Caesar in 46 bc and became a Roman colony in ad 146. It formed part of the province of Byzacena[ and was the seat of a Christian bishop. Under the Romans and Byzantines, it reversed its earlier role to serve as a defense post against local Berber attacks. The town survived the Muslim invasions but was destroyed by the Banu Hilal tribe in the 11th century before being reëstablished

Day Trips from Tunis: Hiking & Urbex - abandoned Roman mineshafts on Djebel Ressas, Tunisia

We went to try and climb Djebel Ressas, a 795m peak in Tunisia's Ben Arous Governorate. Instead, we got lost in an abandoned mineshaft! After a fun bit of urbex it all worked out OK in the end, and we enjoyed some amazing views from high up on the mountain. Such a sunny day in the north of Tunisia!

Carthage, the marvelous ancient city: journey in the heart of the Empire of the sea #Tunisia

We start this series on Tunisia, a North African country with 12 million inhabitants.

We begin this journey in Hammamet, a seaside resort located 60 kilometers from the capital Tunis. Tourists, mostly Europeans, have been coming here since the second half of the 20th century because of the town's beautiful beaches. There are also vestiges of the Roman period, especially with the presence of thermal baths.

Thereafter, we continue in the mythical city of Carthage. During antiquity, this city was qualified as an empire of the sea, because of the nature of its maritime power. The city was at the heart of the rivalry between the Roman and Carthaginian empires. The Punic Wars those empires were epic, ending with the victory of Rome and the destruction of Carthage in 146 BC.

The Punic quarter of Byrsa is in the heart of Ancient Carthage, on the hill of the same name where the ancient Punic citadel and possibly its acropolis stood. After the Arab conquests, the site of Carthage was abandoned, the latter preferring Tunis. The materials resulting from the destruction of Carthage will be used for the expansion of the infrastructures of the neighboring city.

Finally, we complete this video with a trip to the Djebel Manâr, where Sidi-Bou-Saïd is founded. This village owes its fame to the blue of its houses, which has become the symbol of Tunisia. The history of this village goes back to the Carthaginians and Romans. While some evoke the memory of the signal fires that guided the Punic galleys to Carthage, others recall that the mosaics of Roman villas were found there. It is around the 11th century, that the heights of the village were chosen by the Almoravids for the defense of the north-eastern coasts of Tunisia. Watchtowers and fire towers were built there. The hill is named Djebel El Manar, that is to say the Mountain of Fire.
