Want a stunning weekend break? Then join us as we show you Belfast and the Causeway Coastal Route, on this Northern Ireland road trip! Amazing things to do in and around BELFAST
Visiting the Game of Thrones Dark Hedges, The Giants Causeway, Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, Titanic, Mount Stewart, sample the nightlife at some of the famous pubs in the Belfast City Centre and much more.
Belfast has stepped it up a gear and is now truly a fantastic destination for a weekend break. With flights from Europe at reasonable prices, you can bag a great deal within a low budget.
We hired a car to allow us to travel further out of the city and within just a 2 hours radius there are many attractions and beautiful and stunning locations/views.
We drove the Causeway coastal route in a loop so that we ended up back in Belfast at the end of the first day. Maps and links are in the video and below.
Setting out at 8am we started at the Dark Hedges, this enabled us to arrive at the Giants Causeway at 9.15am close to opening and to try and avoid the crowds.
We spent a few hours walking the coastal trails before the weather turned so we moved on by 10 miles to Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge. . Torr Head was our next stop, with views over to Scotland and the Mull of Kintyre.
Back in Belfast for the evening we sampled some Guinness and visited a few of the famous pubs in the Cathedral Quarter. It's very lively here and worth checking out the area. There is lots of choices.
On Sunday we started the day with an Ulster Fry at Maggie May's before driving the Shankill road to look at the murals. The Titanic Museum is £19 and at that price, you want to make sure you give yourself a few hours to see all the artefacts and outdoor locations. Sadly we didn't feel we had enough time to see it all and so passed on the entrance fee and walked around the free open areas. An excuse to come back and do this attraction properly sometimes!
To end our weekend, we had a beer at The Crown pub in the city centre. It's a very famous Victorian pub with all its original fixtures and fittings. See if you can find a free booth to sit and drink in!

SHANKILL TOWN in Ireland
Shankill (Irish: Seanchill, meaning 'Old Church') is an outlying suburb of Dublin, Ireland, situated in the administrative area of Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown. Located in the south-east of the historic County Dublin, close to the border with County Wicklow, it has a population of 14,257 (2016 census). It runs from the coast, between Loughlinstown and Bray, inland towards the foothills of the Dublin Mountains. Shankill borders Rathmichael, as well as Loughlinstown, Killiney, Ballybrack and Bray in County Wicklow.
It is part of the Civil Parish of Rathmichael, and contains the formerly separate district of Shanganagh, and in its southern parts, the locality of Crinken.

Personally, I love Belfast. I've been there twice and both times I had a fantastic time. It doesn't have many world-famous buildings or landmarks, but what it does have is some captivating history and beautiful nearby scenery. In this video, I'll tell you everything you need to plan an amazing trip to Belfast, Northern Ireland.
To start, you have the city with things to see like Belfast City Hall, Albert Memorial Clock, Big Fish (Salmon of Knowledge), Titanic Belfast, and more. But you also need to do the incredible Black Cab tours where you'll learn about the Troubles in Belfast, see the Belfast Political Murals and Peace Wall, visit the Shankill Road and Falls Road neighborhoods, and get an incredible history lesson. Make sure to also plan a day trip to the Giant's Causeway for you can visit Carrickfergus Castle, see the beautiful Antrim Coast, walk across the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, hear a tale about fighting giants, and see the breathtaking rock formations at the Giant's Causeway. It's a great city to visit for a few days and I don't think you'll regret it.

Belfast, Northern Ireland (Part 1) | Black Cab Tour | Sectarian Neighborhoods
Visiting Belfast, the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland. Belfast has a proud and prosperous history as a shipbuilding hub. But its recent history is soaked in the blood of the sectarian conflict known as “The Troubles”, a war waged between the two main groups of people who live in Northern Ireland. The Protestants, who want to remain part of the United Kingdom, and the Catholics, who want to unite with the Republic of Ireland.
A great way to explore and learn about this when visiting Belfast is to take a black cab tour, which is what I did, and is what part 1 of this 2-part series from Northern Ireland is focused on.

We're in the Black Cab tour in Belfast
Let's see what we see.
The black taxi political tours are a great way to learn about Northern Ireland's turbulent history
Where the catholic and protestant conflict ended just 20 years ago.
The main Protestant neighbourhood is Shankhill Road and Falls Road
And these are the areas we'll visit here today.
But you'll find that a lot of our working class areas are still quite segregated.
Many of the drivers actually lived through the turmoil of the 80s
And have many personal stories to share
The tour begins in the Protestant neighbourhood of Shankill Road
Here we had the chance to walk through the community viewing the painted murals
Portraying pivotal moments in history.
The murals commemorate those who fought and died in the conflict
I'm sure you've heard of all the troubles here Ireland.
Guys see the Freedom 2000.
That's in reference to a prison.
When the conflict was on here we had two types of prisoners.
We had what were known as political prisoners and then we had what was known as ODC
That stood for ordinary decent criminal.
The second half of our tour took us to the Falls Road Clonard Martyrs Memorial Gardens
It's surprising to see just how close these two communities are.
They are side by side divided only by the long concrete wall known as the Peace Wall.
The memorial pays respect to the IRA volunteers who fought and lost their lives during the troubles.
The IRA carried the title of Volunteer.
The troubles of Belfast are now in the past but the
Working class communities are still segregated
The Wall still stand and even today there is a curfew at
Falls Road where the barriers close daily at 10pm

Shankill to Carraig Gollogan
Walking from Shankill along the Dublin Mountains way to Rath Michael a 6th century monastic site with Viking tomb stones called Rathdown Slabs. Then onto Carraig Gollogan hill and onto Ballychorus lead mines chimney.
Belfast Christmas Market, one of the best in the world?
Today we visit Belfast’s Donegal square and the Christmas market. It’s actually a very beautiful setting for the Market, in front of the majestic Belfast City Hall. Incidentally, you can see another Naked Ireland video on the City hall if this interests you?
The video takes a walk around to see some of what’s available at the market. We see a suchi bar, French crepes and of course Lavery's bar, one of the staples of the annual Christmas market. And of course no Christmas market would be complete without a Bratwurst stall, we pass a couple on our walk through the market.There are several homemade confectionary stalls too, always popular at Christmas time, and dishes such as Spanish Paella are also available alongside the traditional burger.
But it’s not just food. This is a great place to buy your winter woollies, or pick up a few Christmas presents. The stalls allow you to buy interesting garments from different parts of Europe.
For the kids there’s the vintage Helter Skelter and a beautiful carousel.
The hardest thing in the market is just moving through the crowd, it's extremely busy so bear this in mind.
We look at the beautiful decorations suspended in the air along the front of the city hall perimeter. On that subject, the Market was voted the 16th most picturesque Christmas Market in Europe. I have to say that these rating seem to be based on the number of Instagram hashtags, so I can’t vouch for the reliability of the survey, but it’s significant that Belfast seems to come out on top of areas that we would perhaps associate as being the home of the Christmas market such as Dusseldorf, Berlin and Prague.
I’ve been to a few Christmas markets, in Germany, Austria and the UK and Ireland and I think the Belfast one holds up quite well against the competition. Let me know in the comments what your experience is.
There is also a traditional German Beer cellar, where you can drink huge steins of wheatbeer – whats not to like about that?
All in all it’s a wonderful place to spend a few hours, to grab some tasty food and some gluwein or a stein of beer.
