10 BEST FOODS to eat in Hong Kong (and exactly WHERE to get them) | THE CLASSIC HONG KONG FOOD TOUR

WELCOME TO HONG KONG!
Whether you're just coming to visit, or you've just moved to Hong Kong or you're moving out of Hong Kong and want to make sure you haven't left any stones unturned before you leave, this is the tour! This is what you have to eat in Hong Kong before leaving! The MUST EATS of Hong Kong. These are the most classic, well known, and famous Hong Kong dishes and foods. Make sure to try out these foods at their most famous restaurants respectively to really get in the ultimate Hong Kong food experience.

All these restaurants are super well known so don't worry if they look off the beaten path because they're not. Also, whoever tells you these places are hidden gems are clearly lying to you LOL English menus are available at all these places with the exception of Joy Hing so don't worry. This Hong Kong food tour is meant for you to do it yourself so it shouldn't be intimidating. This food tour is also within a small area (the more touristy areas of Hong Kong) so you'll be able to do it within a few hours though I would recommend you spilt it up before two days as there is quite a bit of food.

Once you've done this, come back and we'll go through the more hidden gems of Hong Kong but start here first so you get a basic food foundation of the flavours of Hong Kong. =) If you go straight to the hidden gems without a base, you'll won't really understand why those are hidden gems, if that makes sense.

EDIT: Just doing my tour guide training and there's a correction. Cookie crust arrived in Hong Kong in the 1940's and puff pastry in the 1950's.

This is my ultimate Hong Kong travel guide including 30 things to do, secrets, best foods to eat and best places to visit which I carefully selected, like Michelin star Dim Sum at Tim Ho Wan, Hing Kee clay-pot rice dises, secret Lugard Street, Lan Fong Yuen Hong Kong tea, Yum Cha, Roasted Pigeon, Yik Cheong Building, Symphony of Lights and the vibrant Hong Kong Nightlife at LKF. Hong Kong may appear to be massive when you look at photos of its skyline but trust me it is conveniently packed and can be easily explored within 2 days. I recommend you start Hong Kong at the Victoria Peak which offers amazing views of the Hong Kong island skyline, but avoid paying $7 USD for the Skyterrace, instead take a 15-minute hike on the secret Lugard Road which leads to the best view of Hong Kong.

Great attractions on Hong Kong island are the Yik Cheong building at Quarry Bay, easily reachable by subway and Oddies, Hong Kong style egg-waffles in the Central district.

Other typical places to visit are Lan Fong Yuen, for their special Hong Kong tea ($3 USD), filtered to actual stockings, leaving no residue. Also try their buns seared with condensed milk.

The most bizarre dish I must have eaten was the wild pigeon at Kwan Yu Roasted Meats in Causeway Bay, an entire roasted pigeon for $6 USD with a cup of extremely strong tea. A meal for champions to say the least.

For a more delightful dinner, venture out to Yung Kee Restaurant for their Signature Charcoal Roasted Goose for $35 USD. Crispy goose skin covered juicy goose meat, a true local delicacy.

Hong Kong also offers very fun restaurants and great for food photography, especially Yum Cha, for their cute dim sum steamer baskets containing piggy pork buns, pineapple bird cakes in a cage and funky molten custard buns. Make sure to poke a hole for the hot custard to ooze out of its mouth. I even ran into a few Reformatt subscribers from Japan and Hong Kong who were also dining at the same restaurant.

Find the most fun attractions in Hong Kong:

Find the cheapest hotels in Hong Kong:

Another bizarre restaurant is Hoi Tin Tong where you can try out the local turtle jelly which apparently cures you from a hangover. Although pricey, at $15 USD you may expect a lot, but it is very blend until you pour some honey into the mix. Their best treat is the almond pudding, this was beyond delicious for just $2 USD.

The BEST Hong Kong dim sum can be experience at Michelin-star restaurant Tim Ho Wan, for extremely cheap prices, Shumai at $4 USD, Har Gow at $4 USD and BBQ pork buns at $3 USD, basically $1 USD per item. Absolutely ridiculously cheap for Michelin rated food. Arrive before 5pm to avoid any line-ups.

In conclusion, I have to say that Hong Kong is one of the coolest cities I've ever been to, but you must remember, Hong Kong is a pure business city, the locals can be very rushed and occupied. Hong Kong never really focused on being a hardcore tourist destination so keep that in mind. This itinerary is ideal for 2 days in Hong Kong, everything is within proximity, so you won't spent too much time travelling around.

Sha Tin Info:
Sha Tin is a city along the Shing Mun River in the Sha Tin District of East New Territories, Hong Kong. Administratively, it is part of the Sha Tin District. It is one of Hong Kong's most prominent examples of new town developments in the 1970s. Together with its satellite town Ma On Shan, Shatin is the most populous city in the New Territories, with a 2011 population census of 630,273 within an area of 35.87 km2. Situated in the southern half of New Territories East below Tolo Harbour, it is the principal city of Sha Tin District, which is the second most populous district of the territory.

The city was founded in 1973 under the New Towns Development Programme of the Hong Kong government. Its current name was named after the nearby village of Sha Tin Wai. Housing the industrial area of Fo Tan, Shatin's economy once heavily relied on manufacturing, logistics, and transportation. Since the late 1990s, it has undergone an extensive transition into areas such as business, service, tourism, entertainment, culture, education, sports, technology, and scientific research. This has been marked by the building of Sha Tin Racecourse, Hong Kong Sports Institute and the Hong Kong Science Park in its outskirts.

Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery Info:
The Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery (Chinese: 萬佛寺) is a mid-20th-century Buddhist temple located in Sha Tin, Hong Kong, at 220 Pai Tau Village. Its designation as a monastery is actually a misnomer because there are no monks residing at the complex, which is managed solely by laypersons. Both the main temple building and the pagoda are listed as Grade III historic buildings by the Government of Hong Kong.

Groundbreaking and construction of the temple began in 1951 under Yuet Kai and his followers, and the structure was finished six years later. It closed for three years at the end of the 20th century after one of its caretakers was killed in a mudslide caused by poorly-maintained slopes nearby. The main journey up to the monastery is an attraction itself, as the path is lined on both sides with golden Buddhas, each unique and in different poses. Despite the common translation of its name, the monastery actually contains nearly 13,000 Buddha statues.

Its designation as a monastery is actually a misnomer because there are no monks residing at the complex, which is managed solely by laypersons. Both the main temple building and the pagoda are listed as Grade III historic buildings by the Government of Hong Kong.

Walking at the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery, is a mid-20th century Buddhist temple located in Sha Tin, Hong Kong, at 220 Pai Tau Village.
