See Sestri Levante Italy in Liguria, on the Italian Riviera. Sestri Levante is well known to Italian and European tourists, but overlooked by Americans going to Cinque Terre or Portofino. While Sestri is by no means undiscovered (nothing is anymore) it is noticeably less crowded than Cinque Terre, less glitzy than Portofino and much more Italian than either. And close to both!
In this video, we’ll show you some of our favorite Sestri Levante places and things to do, including one of the best beaches in Liguria and the secret passage way to a short hike to a spectacular viewpoint above Sestri Levante.

Sestri Levante is a unique place, knows as la citta dei due mari (the city of the two seas), because is located close to a promontory, the island, which is joined to the mainland by an isthmus colored by the houses that divide the Bay of Fables, from the smaller Bay of Silence.
The Bay of Silence is certainly the most famous beach in the city. It is the classic fishing bay: the wooden boats that float, the clear water and the promontory for protection. An intimate place, surrounded by the soft colors of the colored facades of the houses that rise behind the beach.

After a dip, stop for an aperitif with your feet in the sand: at sunset, when the colors turn into pastel shades, you will experience unforgettable moments.
The Baia delle Favole is located on the opposite side of the first beach. Here the beach is larger and wider and certainly also very suitable for families with children.
The beach is named in honor of Hans Christian Andersen, the Danish writer and author of The Little Mermaid, who stayed here several times.
The beach is full of establishments, but also of free equipped beaches: there are showers, many bars and even a small dog-friendly beach in Sant’Anna.

When searching for a place to study Italian at, I discovered the picturesque Ligurian town Sestri Levante. The town is overshadowed by known nearby sites such as the Cinque Terre or Portofino but is in no way inferior to them. Especially its colorful old town located on a peninsula, with the Bay of Silence on one side and the Fairy Tale Bay on the other side, make this place so particular. Let me show you around the charming old town as well as both of its bays with their beautiful beaches.

This beach is all rock! Locals make a beach of rock because in Italy one says, “Andiamo al Mare” - let’s go to the sea, rather than let’s go to the beach. Even these beaches are the best of the Italian riviera!

Sestri Levante is known as “the city of the two seas”, because it stands close to a rocky promontory, called “I’isola”, which extends towards the sea.
The peninsula is joined to the mainland by an isthmus, a thin strip of land that divides the Baia delle Favole, where the tourist port has been created, from the smaller but even more suggestive Baia del Silenzio.
Every year the Fairytale Festival takes place here, dedicated to the writer Hans Christian Andersen, who stayed in Sestri Levante in 1833, and fell madly in love with these places. So much so that he was inspired to write some of his most famous fairy tales.
The name Baia delle Favole, on the other hand, was baptized in this way by the television host Enzo Tortora, another illustrious name who fell in love with this wonderful territory.
In addition to the beautiful panorama that the nature of this magnificent area gives us, in Sestri Levante you will also admire the touch of the inhabitants of this land who, over the centuries, have built the characteristic elegant buildings with pastel-colored facades that are reflected in the sea.
Here you will not miss the relaxing life on the beach, many restaurants offering good cuisine, hotels, B&Bs and apartments of a good standard, as well as a strategic position that will allow you to discover the entire Riviera.

Sestri Levante is a quiet little town in Italy. It is a beautiful place at the Ligurian Riviera approximately halfway between Genoa and La Spezia.
