In The Mood for Alentejo: Part 3 | Exploring Estremoz, Elvas, Mouchão & Marvão | Travel in Portugal

Alentejo in Portugal is a spectacularly vast region that urges anyone with a love for bucolic sceneries and dramatic landscapes to come back over and over again. This time, we headed to Alto Alentejo, this Portuguese hinterland that shares a border with Spain, exploring the deeply historic Estremoz, the garrison town of Elvas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its mighty twin fortresses, and climbed the Serra de São Mamede (on the mountainous district of Portalegre) for the grand finale that is the ancient hilltop town of Marvão.

In between, we encountered two wonderful surprises -- a stay in Monte da Provença, this idyllic and rural farmhouse hotel just outside Elvas, and finally, a visit in Herdade do Mouchão, one of the oldest vineyards in Alentejo, with their heritage Alicante Bouschet wines that have surpassed renown.

As you can see, I truly enjoy Alentejo. There's just so much beauty in the region still left unexplored that I keep coming back here to create more videos.

This is the third part of The Alentejo Series, or dare I say The Alentejo Trilogy, and hopefully won't be the last.

MYSTERIOUS ELVAS, CASTELO PORTUGAL (PART 10) ELVIS

Elvas is truly one of Portugal’s hidden gems. This highly fortified and historic town is situated on the arid border region with Spain, and was historically regarded as the strategic connection between Spain and Portugal

Centuries of border disputes and the constant threat of invasion from Spain, resulted in Elvas become one of the most fortified towns in Portugal. There are layers of interconnecting walls and battlements, but the real defensive masterly is truly appreciated when the town is seen from above, with a unique star shape to the town walls and forts.

Serpa Alentejo Portugal HD

Serpa is located in the Lower Alentejo, on an elevation in the left bank of the river Guadiana and is home to one of the largest municipalities in the country.

Town inhabited since ancient times, Serpa had a great Roman and Arab influence. It was conquered to the Moors by D. Afonso Henriques in 1166 and was lost several times during the struggles of the Reconquest. It was definitively constituted like county in 1295 by D. Dinis that had surrounded Serpa by a waist of walls.

Its geographical location near the border has always made Serpa a strategic point of national defense evident during the Restoration War when Serpa was almost completely destroyed.

For its long history, Serpa has several places of interest to visit!
