Where to go in Moscow and forget that you are in a megalopolis? Where to take a walk in Moscow and feel like in the country?
One of these places is the village of Sokol. It has been around for a century! Walking around the village, on every street you can see residential buildings built in the 20-30 years of the last century. Famous people of their time lived in them: engineers, architects, scientists, actors and many others. There are even houses where families have been living for several generations.

Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg - Exhibition - Walking Tour in Russia

On the embankment of Vasilyevsky Island in St. Petersburg, opposite the famous Egyptian sphinxes, you will see a three-story long building. This is the Academy of Arts, founded under Elizaveta Petrovna and which became the cradle of Russian fine arts.

Talented portrait painters Fyodor Rokotov and Orest Kiprensky, the founder of the Russian landscape school Semyon Shchedrin and the ideologist of a whole generation of realist painters Ivan Kramskoy, the master of historical subjects Vasily Surikov and famous painters Vasily Tropinin, Mikhail Vrubel and Valentin Serov studied here.

Among the outstanding teachers of the Academy of Arts are Vladimir Makovsky and Ivan Shishkin, Arkhip Kuindzhi and Ilya Repin.

The idea of creating the Academy of Arts was expressed by Peter the Great at the end of the 17th century, when there was no St. Petersburg yet, and there was a swamp on the site of the current Academy. The emperor's proposal was implemented only in the second half of the 18th century thanks to the proposal of Mikhail Lomonosov and Count Ivan Ivanovich Shuvalov, a favorite of Elizabeth Petrovna, a well-known philanthropist and enlightener.

The Academy of Fine Arts was established by decree of the Senate in 1757. In the early years, she was listed at Moscow University and had an extremely meager budget. Ivan Shuvalov became the first President of the Academy. Classes in painting, sculpture and architecture were held in his mansion.

Moreover, the Count used his own money to invite the best teachers from Europe, and gave his own collection of books and paintings to the Academy and thus laid the foundation for the creation of the first art museum in Russia.

Catherine II granted the Academy the status of an Imperial Academy and, on her orders, the construction of a building on Vasilyevsky Island began. The project, developed by Jean Baptiste Michel Vallin-Delamote and Alexander Kokorinov, was approved by the Empress in 1764. A year later, a ceremonial laying of the building took place.

The majestic building was one of the first buildings created in the style of classicism. The construction and interior decoration were completed in 1788.

During the XVIII-XIX centuries, the design of the Academy of Arts was carried out by its students, Russian painters and sculptors. They were decorated, including the ceremonial interiors, where in our time the Museum of the Academy of Arts is located. In particular, the design of the House Church of the Academy, the Raphael and Titian halls was carried out under the guidance of the famous architect Konstantin Ton.

The front facade of the building is decorated with a portico, between the columns of which you will see sculptures of Hercules and the goddess of flowers Flora (these are copies of ancient statues).

The building is interesting because it has an absolutely round courtyard with a diameter of 55 meters, the existence of which few people will guess when looking at the facade. Four doors lead from the lobby to the courtyard, above which the main creative areas of the school's activities are indicated: Painting. Sculpture, Architecture and Education.

Note that it is not so easy to freely enter the courtyard, the watchman will stop you. At the same time, entrance to the museum at the Academy of Arts is possible if you purchase a ticket or visit it for free on the Night of Museums:

The Museum at the Academy of Arts is open daily, except Monday and Tuesday (Wednesday and Friday from 12:00 to 20:00, Thursday and Sunday - from 11:00 to 19:00, Saturday - from 11:00 to 20:00 , entrance is paid, there are benefits)
In recent years, the museum has been participating in the Night of Museums campaign. During this action, you have a unique opportunity to see not only museum exhibits (architectural collections, collections of paintings, sculptures and graphics), but also a round courtyard. As a rule, the museum presents an interesting program dedicated to Museum Day. In addition, the museum is not at all obliged to take part in this action and whether it will participate in it in the future is unknown.

Trans Siberian Railway Journey - Is it safe to travel on Trans Siberian Railway? | Traveller Pedia

A journey on the #Trans_Siberian_Railway should be on everyone's bucket list.  It's safe, comfortable & affordable. In this video I'll explain the routes, trains, classes, prices, answer your questions, and help you plan & book your trip...

What is the Trans-Siberian Railway?
The Trans-Siberian Railway is just one part of the massive Russian railway network, transporting passengers and freight safely at affordable prices.  It connects the European rail network at one end with either Vladivostok or the Chinese rail network at the other.  Take a look at the route map below to see where the Trans-Siberian Railway goes.  You can use it to travel overland in either direction between London, Paris or anywhere in Europe and China, Japan, Korea or even Southeast Asia...

When to go? Eastbound or westbound? Is it safe?
Yes, the Trans-Siberian is perfectly safe, even for families or solo females.  It's the way Russian families and women travel, after all.
You can go at any time of year as the Trans-Siberian Railway operates all year round.  Naturally, the summer months from May to September have the best weather and the longest daylight hours so are the most popular.  In winter it's easier to get tickets, the trains are warmly heated and the Siberian landscape beautiful in the snow, but the hours of daylight will be shorter and stretching your legs at stations or visiting the cities will be chillier.  In many ways it's the slushy thaw around April that's least attractive.
On board the trains, Kupé 4-berth sleepers (2nd class) is the usual comfortable choice for most westerners.  2-berth Spalny Vagon (1st class) is now quite rare, but you can pay for 4 tickets in kupé to get sole occupancy or a 4-berth compartment if you like.
You can travel the Trans-Siberian Railway either eastbound or westbound, it's up to you, although eastbound tends to be more popular with westerners, perhaps because going out by rail from your local station and flying back is more romantic than starting your trip with a flight.  On this page I cover both directions, remember that any comments written from an eastbound perspective usually apply westbound too!

COVID-19 UPDATE:  All international train service between Russia Mongolia & China is cancelled since February due to Coronavirus, please check latest situation.  Russian domestic trains are still running, including the Moscow-Vladivostok Rossiya.  Russia's borders are currently closed.  More COVID-19 information.

Felix Castillo in Manezhnaya Square, Moscow - Russia, November 2012 - Great!

????????The National Opera is the largest musical theater of Ukraine. Kyiv.

✅ A permanent opera troupe was organized in Kyiv only in 1867 and became, along with the theaters of Moscow and St. Petersburg, one of the best in the Russian Empire. In February 1896, after the morning showing of Eugene Onegin, a fire broke out that completely destroyed the building of the City Theater, after which a competition for the design of the new building was announced.

✅ Above the main entrance to the theater is the official coat of arms of Kyiv with the image of Archangel Michael, the patron saint of the city. But at the insistence of Metropolitan Feognost of Kyiv, who considered the theater a sinful institution, the coat of arms was replaced by an allegorical composition: heraldic griffins hold a lyre in their paws as a symbol of musical art.

✅ The facade of the building was decorated with busts of composers M. Glinka and A. Serov, T. Shevchenko, presented to Kyiv by artists of the St. Petersburg Mariinsky Theater.
In September 1901, the ceremonial opening and consecration of the new building took place. Fyodor Shalyapin performed in the theater.

✅ In its architectural design, the Kyiv Opera House is a wonderful ensemble of a neo-Renaissance building, which impressed the imagination of the time with its perfection. The interiors feature Venetian mirrors, gilding, bronze, exquisite velvet chairs and elegant lamps from Vienna, marble stairs and floor mosaics, as well as patterned stucco walls and ceilings.

✅ All the most interesting things are on my interactive map for travelers - historical Ukraine. Routes, descriptions in three languages, and photos to more than 1,500 historical locations in Ukraine. There are also interesting natural places, Instagram locations for photo shoots, even places that few people know about, and many other interesting things for traveling.
