7. Explore the medina Fes el Bali
Fes el Bali is the oldest walled part of Fez. It consists of more than 9,000 narrow alleyways, so it’s a true maze. That’s why we recommend going on a guided tour here on your first day. Not only will you see the important historical sights and souks, but you’ll also feel more at ease wandering these tight alleys.

6. Get a view over the medina
The old city of Fes is surrounded by hills that offer panoramic views. The Marinid Tombs are located on the hill that lies to the north of the city. These monumental tombs were originally a royal necropolis for the Marinid dynasty which ruled in the 13th to 15th centuries. And although the tombs are in a heavily ruined state today, it’s still fun to walk around here and take in the views of the entire walled medina area from above.
5. Stroll around the Jnan Sbil Gardens
If you need to escape the hustle and bustle of the medina, then head to the only public garden in the area. This peaceful slice of nature is home to various birds, plants, flowers, and palm tree-lined walkways. Stroll around the gardens to recharge your batteries.
4. Admire the Bou Inania Madrasa
Located in the medina, this ‘madrasa’, or Islamic school of learning, is one of the few religious buildings in the city that non-Muslims are allowed to enter. It was constructed in the 14th century and up until the 1960s, this was an actual functioning theological school. Today, you can admire the beautiful carved woodwork, marble courtyard, mosaic tilework and decorations.
3. Take in the Smells of the Tanneries
The tanneries of Fez are one of the city’s most famous attractions. Located in the old town, the tanneries have been the bustling center of the city's leather industry since the medieval era. The only way to get the iconic bird’s-eye views over the dying pits is to visit the leather stores surrounding the tannery area.
2. Go on a day trip to Volubilis & Meknes
One of the things we liked about Fez was its proximity to other interesting destinations. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Volubilis is situated a one and a half hour drive from Fez. Home to the best-preserved Roman ruins in all of Morocco, this site was one of the most remote outposts of the Roman Empire.

In this video, we set out on an adventure into the Atlas Mountains in Morocco.
We started our journey in Fes, taking a Grand Taxi to the town of Sefrou. Whilst there, we visit an Olive Oil factory and a local bakery. We then walked to the Sefrou Falls and then onwards into the Atlas Mountains. Ahmed, our guide, then hired a Tuk Tuk and we all clambered aboard towards the town of Bhalil to see a Berber cave home.

CASCADES DE L'AGGAÏ - SEFROU - MAROC

Ces cascades sont facilement accessibles par le Chemin de la Cascade, une petite route qui se trouve tout de suite après le pont qui enjambe l'oued Aggaï dans le centre-ville de Sefrou.
Nous avons donc suivi cette petite route, mais nous nous sommes rendus trop loin. Ayant de la difficulté à localiser les cascades, nous avons eu la chance de rencontrer une petite famille qui revenait de l'intérieur des terres.
Ne parlant qu'arabe, c'est par signe que nous avons communiqué avec eux. Ils nous indiqué que nous devions faire demi-tour et tourner à gauche.
Nous avons donc fait demi-tour. Cependant, en arrivant à l'intersection, nous n'avons pris aucune chance. Deux personnes se trouvant devant cette intersection, nous en avons profité pour leur demander si cette route était celle qui menait aux cascades. Ils ont acquiescé.
En discutant avec eux, nous avons remarqué que l'un des deux jeunes hommes était non-voyant. Nous leurs avons offert d'embarquer avec nous pour se rendre à la cascade.
Nous avons stationné notre voiture dans le petit stationnement situé tout près des cascades et nous nous sommes dirigés en bordure de la terrasse pour obtenir une vue panoramique du secteur.
Deux cascades, d'une hauteur approximative de 20 m, s'écoulent à travers les rochers et se jettent dans un bassin peu profond. L'endroit est vraiment pittoresque.
Ces eaux se dirigent ensuite vers un grand bassin plus profond dans lequel on peut se baigner.
Des tapis sont installés sur le sol pour ceux qui aimeraient profiter d'un moment de détente.
Un espace de restauration est aménagé avec tables et chaises confortables.
Après discussion avec les deux jeunes hommes que nous venions de rencontrer, nous avons convenu de les reconduire jusqu'à Fès puisque cet endroit correspondait à notre prochaine destination.
L'un deux était infirmier et l'autre avait fait des études en kinésiologie, mais ne pratiquait pas encore ce métier. Nous avons eu l'occasion d'échanger sur nos différentes cultures.

صفرو هي مدينة مغربية صغيرة تقع في سفح جبال الأطلس المتوسط على بعد واحد وعشرين كيلومترا جنوب شرق مدينة فاس. للمولى إدريس الثاني قول مشهور وهو: «سأرحل من مدينة صفرو إلى قرية فاس». يستدل المؤرخون بهذا القول للاستدلال على أن مدينة صفرو تأسست قبل فاس بفترة طويلة. وقد أطلق على المدينة لقب حديقة المغرب بسبب تميزها بغطاء نباتي متنوع وحقول شاسعة ووفرة المياه بها .
كانت مدينة صفرو ولمدة طويلة ملجأ لجل اليهود المغاربة الذين سكنو المدينة مند 2000 سنة وكان عددهم آنذاك يقارب 8000 شخص. لكن اغلبهم اعتنقو الإسلام فور دخول المولى إدريس الأول. فاصبحت أقلية يهودية في المنطقة وايضا في مختلف مناطق المغرب إلى ان رحل جلهم سنة 1967 إلى الكيان الإسرائيلي.
التسمية
كانت تُسمَّى مدينة صفرو باسمِ «أهل صفرو» وهي قبيلة أمازيغية يهودية اعتنقت الإسلام. ويرجع أصل الكلمة إلى اللغة الامازيغية فالأسم الأصلي «اصفراو» فيعني المنطقة المقعرة.
وهناك قول اخر منتشر حول أصل التسمية، فيقسمها البعض إلى كلمتين: فتعني كلمة «Efrou» الهاربين أو المختبئين، بينما تعني كلمة «As» المكان، وبالتالي فكلمة اصفرو تعني مكان الهاربين أو المختبئين.
التاريخ
تعد مدينة صفرو واحدة من المدن القديمة والعريقة في المملكة المغربية. وعرفت بهذا الأسم من قبل سنة 682 ميلادية .
ما قبل الأسلام
يبدو أن سكان منطقة صفرو الأوائل قد سكنوا أولا الكهوف والمغارات والتي ما يزال بعضها قائما إلى الآن مثل كهف المومن وكهف البقرة وكهف الغولة قبل ان تتطور مساكنهم إلى خيام ثم المنازل الخشبية والطينية والحجرية. ولا زال البعض من سكان بلدة البهاليل المجاورة يعرفون بأستقرارهم في الكهوف .
وقد كانت المنطقة تابعة لنفود اتحادية قبائل الباكوات في عهد الأحتلال الروماني لموريطنية الطنجية وشكل سكانها جزء من تاريخ المقاومة ضد الرومان .
الفتح الاسلامي وتأسيس المدينة
أسست مدينة صفرو في القرن السابع ميلادي وكانت فيما مضى عبارة عن قصور بجوانب أودية وأنهار المدينة ويتكون كل قصر من عدة مداشر, وأصبحت فيما بعد مدينة عالية الاسوار والأبواب ولها قلعة حصينة.
كانت معظم قبائل منطقة صفرو الأمازيغية تدين باليهودية والمسيحية مثل مديونة والبهاليل وفندلاوة وزواغة ومطغرة ومطماطة ومغيلة وسدراتة.
وقد أسلم بعضهم بينما احتفظ بعضهم الأخر بهذه المعتقدات الدينية إلى ما بعد ذالك. وكانت معظم هذه القبائل جزء من اتحادية قبائل برغواطة أو كما سماها الرومان البكاوات. وقد تزعموا وشاركوا في ثورة البربر ضد الحكم العربي الأموي وكان منهم القائد مسيرة المطغري.
الدولة الأدريسية والامارة البرغواطية
مدينة صفرو تحتل موقع جغرافي استراتيجي فقد كانت تتموقع في الطريق التجاري الواقع بين الشمال وبلاد سجلماسة , فشكلت منزلة تحط فيها الرحال وقد استقر بها المولاي ادريس التاني تلات سنوات قبل ان ينتقل لفاس وهو من قال المقولة الشهيرة سأرحل من مدينة صفرو إلى قرية فاس.
بنسبة لقبائل المنطقة فقد ناصر بعضها وبايعوا دولة الادارسة مثل مغيلة وسدراتة. وبعضها ظل مندرج تحت امارة برغواطة مثل مطغرة ومطماطة ودانوا بديانتهم. وانقسمت قبيلة زواغة إلى قسمين، القسم الأول دخلوا في طاعة الادارسة وظلوا مستقرين بناحية فاس وعليهم سمي حي زواغة الحالي، والقسم التاني دان بديانة برغواطة واتبعهم وقد انتقلوا إلى الجبال الشرقية لمدينة صفرو بعد ان اشترى ادريس التاني تلك الاراضي منهم وسموا ببني يازغة.
وبعد أن أصبحت مدينة صفرو تابعة للأدراسة كثرت الثورات وانتشرت الحروب في المنطقة . فنذكر ثورة عبد الرزاق الفهري الخارجي الذي بويع في جبال مديونة (أدرج حاليا) واتبعه أهل صفرو والقبائل الامازيغية المجاورة ودخل بهم لفاس وقاتل أميرها عمر بن علي بن ادريس فانتصروا عليه وملكوا المدينة.
تم غزا المكناسيين المواليين للفاطميين في بدايات القرن 4 هجري مدينة فاس وصفرو ومكناسة وتازة فسيطر قوادهم مصالة بن حبوس المكناسي وموسى بن ابي العافية فقتلوا الامراء الادارسة واجلوهم.
و شارك أهل صفرو والقبائل المجاورة في الحروب التي قادها الامير الحسن بن محمد بن القاسم ضد موسى بن ابي العافية وتمكنوا من قتله. غير أن المكناسيين عادوا واحتلوا المدينة بعد ان خلعوا طاعتهم للفاطميين تم دخلت المنطقة في حالة عدم استقرار فتوالت دول عديدة على حكمها فيما بعد كالادارسة والفاطميين والمكناسيين والامويين والزيريين فأنتهت في أخر المطاف إلى حكم وانودين بن خزرون في العقد الأول من القرن 11 م.
صعود المرابطين وأيام الموحدين
ظلت مدينة صفرو تحت حكم المغراويين إلى أن ظهرت دولة المرابطين فحاصر يوسف بن تاشفين المدينة ولم يتمكنوا من دخولها الا في سنة 1063 ميلادية، بعد ان قتلوا امرائها من أولاد مسعود بن وانودين. تم قاتل القبائل المحيطة بها كأهل صفرو وسدراتة وقام بطردهم فاستقرت الاولى بناحية وجدة بينما اتقرت التانية بالجنوب الشرقي للمغرب. فأصبحت المدينة منذ ذالك الوقت قاعدة لقبائل صنهاجة الامازيغية القادمة من الصحراء وبالضبط فرع مكلاتة المسمى حاليا (ايت يوسي مكلا).
وفي سنة 1441 ميلادية هاجمت قوات الموحدين بقيادة عبد الرحمان بن زجو مدينة صفرو واستولوا عليها . فخرجت جيوش المرابطين اليهم بقيادة علي بن ريفيرتير للقاء بناحية الفلاج شمال شرق المدينة فانهزم الموحدون وقتل قائدهم يحيي آغوال وتحصن بقيتهم في المدينة, ولم يستطع المرابطين دخولها فاصبحت صفرو تابعة لنفوذ القوات الموحدية منذ ذالك الوقت.
وفي أوائل القرن السادس الهجري ثار سكان صفرو على دولة الموحدين . وقد أخمد هذه الثورة إسماعيل إيكيك بن يسلالي الهزرجي وقد كان من طلبة المهدي ابن تومرت.
