Another recommendation is the magnificent view of the crossing of rivers from the Groothoofd.

We're visiting the Dutch city of Gouda in this practical guide to seeing the highlights of Gouda, in Holland, in the Netherlands. Most famous for Gouda cheese, but there are many other attractions to enjoy in this beautiful Dutch city. It has some fine examples of that special Dutch feature of the reflecting canals lined by flowers and pedestrian lanes. But here we've got several of these charming neighborhoods we'll show you in the video, and the important building where the cheese was weighed on the main town square.
The Weighing House, or Waag, has for centuries been a central point in town where the all-important cheese was weighed and deals were made.
It now contains the Tourist Information Center and the Cheese and Crafts Museum where you can taste and purchase a variety of cheeses.
The Markt, or marketplace, is the central plaza in the heart of town, home to countless pubs, restaurants and cozy sidewalk cafes.
The exquisitely proportioned Stadhuys, or City Hall, is a gem of late Gothic and early Renaissance architecture, dating from 1449-59.
The traditional cheese market takes place in the plaza every Thursday mornings 10 AM till 1230 from April through the end of August.
The street alongside the marketplace is one of the busiest in town with lots of shops, and especially the restaurants and bars and cafés – usually buzzing with people.
One block away, Groote Kerk, or Great Church, also called Saint John Church, was founded in 1485 and rebuilt after a fire in 1562. The round-arched arcades are borne by 36 pillars supporting the lofty barrel-vaulted ceiling of dark wood. It is the longest church in the Netherlands, at 123 meters.
Our walking route, starting at the train station and down to that central market square, into the church, then we'll continue along a beautiful canal down to the harbor, and then circling back around in a complete round trip walking tour of the city, and ending up back at the train station. Now we continue along the Westhaven canal.
You can easily walk along this splendid canal from the town center, only 600 meters distance - it'll take you about five minutes - down to the historic harbor where you will find clippers, barges and sailing vessels lying majestically alongside each other in the Museum Harbor, and most of these are still lived in.
In the Middle Ages, due to its central location, the town offered passage to ships en-route to Amsterdam and Flanders. After the 15th century, Gouda's role in international shipping went into decline.
Walking back towards the center from the harbor, you'll see another historic site – it's a windmill, very characteristic of the Netherlands.
We're taking a circular route through town, walking along yet another beautiful canal, observing all these bicycles going back and forth. You can actually rent a bicycle here if you'd like to peddle around in town or even extend out to some of the surrounding areas.
This route to the harbor, and then returning along a few of the less traveled back lanes, gets you off the beaten track. It's an easy stroll that doesn't take much time, and this route can bring you past another few blocks of shopping. Here you can see a benefit of being here when the cheese market is not on – you will not see very many other tourists. Then passing along a few residential blocks with their old-fashioned buildings. It's nice to get away from the historic highlights for a while and into a neighborhood that's more for locals. It's quiet and peaceful over here.
Then you will come around the bend and find what is perhaps the prettiest of the canal scenes in town along what's called the Turfmarkt.
Turf was that peat, or combustible decaying soil that was very important to the old Dutch for cooking and heating their homes, much like in Ireland and elsewhere in the north of Europe.
This route takes us back to the center at the marketplace.
There's a lovely block behind the market square. We can have a peek at it showing that very special Dutch combination of shop fronts along a pedestrian lane next to a charming little canal – circles on the map and next to it is the new market, a modern little shopping mall.
Gouda is generally visited as a daytrip from other nearby cities, which are only 20 to 30 minutes away by train. Even all the way to Amsterdam is just 52 minutes. So you can easily visit Gouda for most of the day without spending the night there. Or if you wish to overnight, there are some fine hotels such as a four-star Best Western.
The superb Dutch rail system makes it very easy to travel around in this relatively small nation, as you will see in our many other movies about the Netherlands, where we take you to all of the highlights of this wonderful country. Look for them in our collection.

Step into a house, where time froze 100 years ago!
Museum Paulina Bisdom van Vliet is located in a small town called Haastrecht, about 40 mins drive from Leiden.
The museum is an authentically furnished house where you wander from room to room seeing the most beautiful pottery, pieces of furniture, paintings, and lavishly decorated curtains.
As this place is less touristic, it really feels like you are visiting a wealthy family.

Oczywiście nie mieliśmy okazji zobaczyć wszystkiego w Holandii, wiele miejsc które widzieliśmy i były fajne, nie znalazły się na liście z powodu braku footage z tych miejscówek. Tutaj jako przykład mogę podać ZOO Ouwehands Dierenpark. Jest to w tej chwili chyba jedyne ZOO w Europie, gdzie można zobaczyć misie Panda. Innym ciekawym miejscem jest Madurodam w Hadze. Jest to park miniarut, gdzie znajdziecie w pomniejszonej wersji wszystkie najpopularniejsze budynki w Holandii.
Takich miejsc mógł bym jeszcze kilka wymienić, ale założeniem było przedstawienie 5 ulubionych miejsc i atrakcji w Holandii i starałem się tego trzymać :)
Innym naszym ulubionym miejsce w Holandii jest Renesse. Tam jednak wybieramy się tylko latem, iż jest to miejscowość nadmorska, z szerokimi piaszczystymi plażami. Bardzo klimatyczne miasteczko do którego uwielbiamy wracać w gorące dni.
Kolejnym miejscem w które fajnie jest się wybrać w Holandii to dzielnica Hagi a mianowicie Scheveningen. Jest to najpopularniejsza plaża w Niderlandach. Znajdziecie tam hotele, bary, restauracje i kluby. Popularną atrakcją jest także wysoki na 50 metrów młyn diabelski Skyview De Pier.

Quiet relaxing Walk in Schoonhoven, also known as the Zilverstad (Silvercity) due to the Gold and Silver smiths that have been working there since the 17the century. Located in the natural rural green heart of the Netherlands and the Lek River. The city is a popular stop for inland cruise ships, especially during the summer period.

Beautiful Silver City Schoonhoven ! (the Netherlands)
Schoonhoven is known for its silver and therefore carries the nickname: Zilverstad (Silver City). Since the 17th century, silver and gold smiths have been working here. Today, Schoonhoven is still known for its silver. It is the host of Het Nederlands Zilvermuseum (the Dutch Silver Museum) and the International Silver School. (from Wikipedia)

Schoonhoven is een heel gezellig vestingstadje aan de Lek in de provincie Zuid-Holland. De stad staat bekend als Zilverstad doordat er in de 14e eeuw al veel zilversmeden waren in de vestingstad welke opdrachten kregen van de kasteelheren. Momenteel is dit nog terug te zien door het Zilvermuseum en de Vakschool Schoonhoven met onder andere de opleiding voor Zilversmid, de enige in Nederland. Een bezoek aan de vestingstad is zeker de moeite waard en je kunt ook nog leuk winkelen bij de vele winkels of lekker genieten van een hapje en drankje bij één van de vele horeca zaken.

Schoonhoven is een stad in de gemeente Krimpenerwaard in de Nederlandse provincie Zuid-Holland. Tot 2015 was het een zelfstandige gemeente
Geschiedenis:
De plaats Schoonhoven is ontstaan langs de rivier de Zevender, waarvan de loop nog herkenbaar is in de Lange Weistraat. Er bevond zich een kasteel ter hoogte van het huidige Springerpark.
Schoonhoven werd in 1247 voor het eerst genoemd als Sconhouen. Het speelde een rol in de strijd tussen Vlaanderen en Holland aan het begin van de 14e eeuw, omdat de slotvoogd Nicolaas van Cats de Vlaamse kant had gekozen. Willem III van Holland en Witte van Haemstede sloegen in juli 1304 het beleg voor Schoonhoven op, en verkregen door een list de overgave van de stad. In 1375 en in juli 1518 vonden grote stadsbranden plaats.[3]
In 1566 bleef Schoonhoven trouw aan Brussel. Bij de inname van Schoonhoven op 20 oktober 1572 maakten de Geuzen onder leiding van Lumey zich meester van het stadje. Maar in 1575 was het Beleg van Schoonhoven door Gilles van Berlaymont in dienst van de hertog van Alva, die echter twee jaar later heel Holland gewonnen gaf.
Al in de 17de eeuw waren er bekende zilversmeden. Schoonhoven heeft een internationale Zilverschool. De stad staat dan ook bekend als de Zilverstad.
Tot 1942 was Schoonhoven het eindpunt van de spoorlijn Gouda-Schoonhoven. Het oorspronkelijke stationsgebouw staat er nog steeds. Het stationsgebied is nu een busstation.
Tot en met 31 december 2014 was Schoonhoven onderdeel van de gemeente Schoonhoven. De Gedeputeerde Staten hebben op 3 februari 2009 een commissie ingesteld die moet gaan onderzoeken hoe de gemeente Schoonhoven op kan gaan in een grotere gemeente. Het K5-samenwerkingsverband met de gemeenten Bergambacht, Nederlek, Ouderkerk en Vlist was daarvoor de basis. Dit resulteerde in het Herindelingsadvies Krimpenerwaard van 10 november 2010 en het wetsbesluit op 19 juni 2014. Op 1 januari 2015 zijn de vijf gemeenten gefuseerd tot de nieuwe gemeente Krimpenerwaard.

Historical cities, pleasant little villages and the Green Heart
At the arrival day you will have time to explore the Dutch capital on foot or to board an excursion boat on a tour through the canals. On Sunday you will follow the Vecht River with lots of gorgeous villas and mansions. The 111 metres high Dom tower in Utrecht is a landmark that you will be able to see from afar.
Cycling through history
From here you will cruise to world harbour Rotterdam, where you will enjoy an organized evening city walk from your tour guide. On Monday you will cycle to gin town Schiedam and the historical city of Delft, where you can visit a Delft Blue factory. During dinner the ship cruises to Dordrecht, where you can take part in a city walk once you arrive. One of the highlights is the UNESCO World Heritage site of Kinderdijk, where you see 19 windmills in a row.

A tour through the countryside will take you to cheese town Gouda and silver town Schoonhoven. A visit to the North Sea coast with its beautiful dunes and the cities Haarlem and the open air museum Zaanse Schans complete this beautiful varied cycling holiday.
