SAN MINIATO, ITALY: Exploring a quiet hilltop town close to the train line between Pisa and Florence in Italy’s Tuscany region. San Miniato is peaceful, off the radar & one of the best places to visit in Tuscany. ???????? See all of my ITALY videos here →
I caught a train from Pisa to San Miniato and spent half a day walking around one of Tuscany’s most beautiful hilltop towns. The streets were quiet and I hardly saw another tourist - just the way I like it. It got me thinking that compared to other places I’d been in Italy this small town is pretty much undiscovered and untouched by mass tourism.
The train station turned out to be 45-60 minutes from the town itself and whilst there was a bus I decided to take the long and scenic walk to the top. I hoped there would be some kind of footpath but all I could find was the verge of a road - not ideal as there were a couple of blind corners and the morning traffic wasn’t in any mood to drive slow.
I started my day at the Tower of Federico II which is the highest point in the town. It overlooks miles of wonderful rolling hills and would have been perfect back in the day to keep a lookout for invaders. The tower was strategically important in that it helped to protect a busy and valuable trade route between the sea and Florence.
My next stop was to admire the grand and glittering Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and Jenesien before wandering along to Piazza della Repubblica which is almost surrounded by the painted walls of the Seminario Vescovile. I continued on through the narrow streets of the town and stopped at a couple of interesting spots to admire the historic buildings and striking open spaces. It was also good to get my drone up in the skies above San Miniato - it gave me another magnificent perspective of the town.

In de herfstvakantie naar Toscane? Goed idee. De grote drukte is voorbij en het weer is vaak prima. Deze beelden maakte ik van onze recente trip naar het Trasimeense Meer (Lago Trasimeno), Arezzo, Cortona, Castiglion Fiorentino en Castiglione del Lago. Deze bestemmingen liggen in Oost-Toscane en dat is net wat minder bekend dan de plaatsen rond Pisa.

De mooiste dorpen van Toscane - Scarperia
Scarperia bevindt zich in de Mugello streek in de regio Firenze. De gemeente is vooral bekend om zijn prachtige paleis Palazzo dei Vicari maar is tevens een belangrijk centrum voor de productie van messen waardoor je overal in het centrum nog winkeltjes van ambachtslui aantreft die messen produceren en verkopen. When we were in our early 20s, chasing our own dreams of living in Europe, we met one night at a pub in Florence...11 months later, we were married! Having been together for 4 years now, we have lived & worked on 3 different continents & even on a cruise ship!
We moved back to Italy to live out one of our biggest dreams - to pull off the Ultimate Italian Road Trip, travelling to all 20 regions of Italy! We will be showcasing the impressive diversity all 20 regions have to offer - from the history, architecture, art, culture, food, traditions and so much more! ????????
