Thiene Palace, Vicenza, Veneto, Italy, Europe

Thiene Palace is a 15th-16th-century palace in Vicenza, northern Italy, designed for Marcantonio and Adriano Thiene, probably by Giulio Romano, in 1542, and revised during construction from 1544 by Andrea Palladio. In 1994 the palace was included in the Vicenza, city of Palladio World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In 1996 the World Heritage Site was renamed City of Vicenza and the Palladian Villas of the Veneto, and it was expanded to include outlying villas. The palace is used as the historic headquarters of a bank and it also hosts some exhibitions and culture events. The palazzo was the headquarter of Banca Popolare di Vicenza. The original Gothic palace was committed by Lodovico Thiene to Lorenzo da Bologna in 1490, with an East front on contrà Porti made of bricks squared by angular lesenes worked at diamond edge, with a portal by Tommaso da Lugano and a triple window made in rose marble. In October 1542 Marcantonio and Adriano Thiene began to remodel their 15th century family palace in a grandiose project, which would have occupied an entire city block of 54 x 62 metres and faced onto Vicenza’s principal artery (today’s Corso Palladio). The rich, powerful and sophisticated Thiene brothers belonged to that great Italian nobility which could move with ease among Europe’s most important courts: they therefore required a domestic stage adequate for the cosmopolitan expectations of their guests who might visit them. At the same time, as exponents of a well-defined, political faction in the city’s aristocracy, they desired a princely palace to emphasise their proper role in the city itself, as the sign of their quasi-seigniorial power. When in 1614 the young English architect Inigo Jones visited the palace, he noted down information directly garnered from Vincenzo Scamozzi and Palma il Giovane: “this project was made by Giulio Romano and executed by Palladio”. Most probably, in fact, the original conception of the Palazzo Thiene should be attributed to the mature and expert Giulio Romano and the young Palladio should be held responsible rather for the executive design and execution of the building, a role which became ever more essential after Giulio’s death in 1546. The elements of the palace which are attributable to Giulio and alien to Palladio’s vocabulary are clearly recognisable: the four-column atrium is substantially identical with that of the Palazzo Te; also Giulian are the windows and the ground storey facades onto the street and courtyard, while Palladio must have been defined the upper storey trabeation and capitals. Works began on the building in 1542. In December of the same year, Giulio Romano visited Vicenza for two weeks as a consultant on the Loggias for the Basilica. Probably on this occasion he supplied the outline project for the Palazzo Thiene. But works proceeded slowly: on the external facade is inscribed the date 1556, and in the courtyard 1558. In 1552 Adriano Thiene died in France and thereafter, when Marcantonio’s son Giulio became marchese of Scandiano, family interests gradually shifted to Ferrara. As a result, only a small portion of the grandiose project was ever realised, but probably neither the Venetians nor the other Vicentine nobles would have accepted such a grandiose private enclave in the centre of their city.

[Mantova 2022] 4K Walk in Mantova Italy | The City of the three lakes

Mantova is protected on three sides by as many river basins located along the course of the Mincio river. The three lakes, in their current conformation, are not of natural origin, but were created in 1190 by the engineer Alberto Pitentino, who designed what is still considered an extraordinary work of hydraulic engineering. Until about the middle of the XVIII century , -when Lake Paiolo was drained-there were even four basins, which made Mantua a real island for several centuries . The Roman myth of the foundation of Mantua traces the origin of the city to the prophetess Manto, who according to Greek tradition is the daughter of the Theban soothsayer Tiresias. In reality, in all likelihood, the name derives from the Etruscan divinity Mantus to whom the founder Onus would have dedicated it.

The mythical origins of the city also echo in the XX Canto of Hell in which Virgil, the most famous Mantuan in history-who was born in 70 BC.-describes the ancient boundaries of the city to Dante. On a historical and archaeological level, the first settlements date back to the late Bronze Age while the first real city development took place under the Etruscan domination (6th century BC). With the Roman conquest in the third century BC, following the victory over the Cenomanian Gauls, the city first became a simple colony, and then rised to the rank of free city with the promulgation of the Lex Iulia de civitate (90 BC), finally becoming a municipium in 47 BC. With the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the city underwent several dominations from the Goths to the Franks, passing through Byzantines and Lombards. Around the year 1000 , it became a possession of the Canossa family whose last and most illustrious representative was the countess Matilde, upon whose death, in 1046, the city became a free municipality, challenging the imperial authority.
In 1273, with the coming to power of the powerful Ghibelline Bonacolsi family,
Mantua became a Lordship.

The Bonacolsi, with the support of the emperor, stood up as defenders of citizenship against the danger represented by the clergy and its inquisition. Their dominion over the city ended in 1328 with the conquest of the city by the Gonzagas, supported by Verona and its militias, commanded by Cangrande I della Scala.

Under the rule of the Gonzagas, Mantua became one of the greatest art centers in Italy and one of the richest and most prestigious courts of the Renaissance period, attracting among the greatest architects and artists of the time, above all Leon Battista Alberti, Giulio Romano and Andrea Mantegna. In 1627, with the extinction of the firstborn line of the Gonzagas, the slow decline of Mantua began, which after a long period marked by wars of succession, looting perpetrated by imperial troops and a serious epidemic of plague, in 1707 passed under Austrian rule .

In 1866 Mantua officially became part of the Kingdom of Italy.
There are many places to visit, above all the Palazzo Ducale, the Castle of San Giorgio, Palazzo Te ', the house of Rigoletto, Piazza Sordello, Piazza delle Erbe, the loggia of the Giulio Romano fishmongers, the Rotonda of San Lorenzo, and the basilica of Sant 'Andrea

La sua costruzione iniziò a partire dal XII secolo dalla famiglia dei Fogliano, oggi prende il nome della famiglia che la abitò dal 1423 al 1560. Visita alla città di Reggio Emilia

Antonio Ligabue's grave, Gualtieri, Reggio Emilia, Emilia-Romagna, Italy, Europe

Antonio Ligabue (Zurich, 18 December 1899 - Gualtieri, 27 May 1965) was an Italian painter and sculptor, one of the most important naive artists of the twentieth century. Antonio Ligabue was born in Zurich, Switzerland, on December 18, 1899 to Maria Elisabetta Costa, originally from Cencenighe Agordino (province of Belluno, Italy) and was registered with the surname of his mother. On January 18, 1901, his mother married Bonfiglio Laccabue, who on March 10 recognized the child by giving him his surname. Antonio, however, when he became an adult, preferred to be called Ligabue (presumably for the hatred he harbored towards Bonfiglio, which he considered as the auxoricide of his mother Elisabetta, who tragically died in 1913 along with three brothers following food poisoning). Even as a child Ligabue never lived with his real family: since September 1900, he was entrusted to Johannes Valentin Göbel and Elise Hanselmann, a childless couple of Swiss Germans, whom the artist always considered as his parents; in particular, the artist had a deep, though troubled, bond with Elise. Due to the poor economic and cultural conditions of the adoptive family, they were forced to constantly move due to the precariousness of work. Therefore, the childhood of the young Antonio was characterized by great hardships, which were joined by the diseases he was suffering from (rickets and goiter), conditions that resulted in the impairment of the physical, mental and psychic development of the future artist. The difficult character and difficulties in his studies led him to change schools several times: first in St. Gallen, then in Tablat and finally in Marbach. However, he was expelled from the latter institution after only two years, in May 1915, for misconduct. In the institute, in any case, Ligabue learns to read with a certain speed, and despite not being capable in mathematics and spelling, he finds constant relief in drawing. Returning to his adoptive family again, they later moved to Staad, where he led a rather erratic life, working occasionally as a farmhand. Between January and April 1917, after a violent nervous breakdown, he was hospitalized for the first time in a psychiatric hospital in Pfäfers. Discharged, he returned again to his adoptive family, who moved to Romanshorn, staying there for short periods, alternating his returns home with aimless wanderings, during which he worked as a farmer or looked after animals on farms. In 1919, after having assaulted his adoptive mother during a quarrel, upon her complaint, he was expelled from Switzerland. He was sent to Italy and on 9 August he arrived in Gualtieri, the place of origin of his father Bonfiglio Laccabue. However, not knowing a word of Italian, he fled in an attempt to return to Switzerland, but was found and brought back to Gualtieri, where he lived with the help of the Carri mendicity hospice. Subsequently he continued, as he did in Switzerland, to practice a nomadic life, occasionally working as a laborer or laborer on the banks of the Po. Just in that period he began to paint. The artistic expression relieved his anxieties, mitigated his obsessions and filled his loneliness. But it was only in 1928 that, thanks to the meeting with Renato Marino Mazzacurati, who understood the genuine art and taught him the use of oil colors, Ligabue decided to devote himself completely to painting and sculpture. In 1937 he was admitted to the San Lazzaro psychiatric hospital in Reggio Emilia, due to his manic-depressive states, which sometimes resulted in violent attacks on self-harm or against others. After his second stay in hospital, he was discharged by the sculptor Andrea Mozzali, who hosted him at his home in Guastalla. During the Second World War, he acted as interpreter for German troops. In 1945, for having hit a German soldier with a bottle, he had to return to the hospital in Reggio Emilia for the last time. After leaving the hospital, he stayed alternatively at the Carri di Gualtieri begging hospital or in the home of friends. At the end of the 1940s, the interest of critics in his works grew. In 1957, Severo Boschi, the designer of Il Resto del Carlino, and the photocronist Aldo Ferrari visited him at Gualtieri: a report was made in the newspaper with still famous images. In the fifties the most prolific period for the artist began and, after his presence in group exhibitions, the first personal exhibitions also began. In 1955, he held his first personal exhibition in Gonzaga, on the occasion of the Millennial Fair. In 1961, the exhibition was set up at the Galleria La Barcaccia in Rome, which marks its national consecration. On November 18, 1962, the artist was struck by a hemiparesis and, after being treated in various hospitals, he found hospitality again at the Carri di Gualtieri hospital, where he died on May 27, 1965. Antonio Ligabue is buried in the Gualtieri Cemetery and the bronze funeral mask made by Andrea Mozzali is placed on his tombstone.
