Phanom Rung historical park - Khmer temple complex in Buriram Thailand Phanomrung Festival Buriram. Phanom Rung Historical Park. The most spectacular Khmer monument in Thailand, Prasat Phanom Rung (Big Mountain Temple) located on the summit of a Phanomrung volcano 200m above the paddy fields. The dramatic entrance and beautiful design make it a must-visit attraction for anyone in the area. (The name historical park is misleading, it's 1 temple complex, well maintained and no mass tourism at all. There is also a museum that explains more about the history of the temples in Isan. Worth a visit) Phanom Rung Historical Park or Prasat Hin Phanon Rung is a key location in Buriram, Thailand. It has many important archaeological sites, which are located at the top of an extinguished volcano 350 meters above seal level. On this now dormant Volcano you will see incredible Khmer architecture, which is assumed to have been built in the 15th - 18th Buddhist century. Here you can marvel at the giant stairways of red stone and sandstone. The long story of Prasat Hin Phanom Rung is part of Thailand history. Don’t miss out on this place when you get to visit Thailand. Once a year, a solar phenomenon appears when the rays of the dawn sun shine straight through all 15 doors of the well preserved Khmer temple in Buriram Province, a rare event that can be witnessed at the annual festival. The festival also includes a colourful procession, cultural presentations, a model village, and spectacular light-and-sound presentations at night.

Buri Ram, which literally means “city of happiness” or “peaceful city,” is situated in the lower part of the Northeastern region, about 410 km from Bangkok. Buri Ram province is the location a number of Archaeological discoveries of pre-historic human habitation and ancient ruins from the Dvaravati period (6th-11th centuries C.E.) The most important Historical evidence found includes more than 60 sandstone sanctuaries scattered around the area. There are also discoveries of important Khmer pottery kiln sites that date back to the 10th – 13th centuries and Buri Ram contains abundant sandstone sanctuaries built by the Khmer Kingdom at Angkor, including Phanom Rung, easily Thailand's most stunning Khmer Monument.
Buriram is a land of volcanoes and ancient Khmer civilization site in Thailand which make it important as a historical tourist attraction. To emphasize its richness in cultural heritage, there are crafts like silk and Na Pho Mudmee (ikat). Currently, Buriram has a popular football stadium and motorsport race track where many tourists never miss.
The town and province of Buri Ram are excellent places to experience authentic, rural Thai life and are ideal for immersing yourself in no-frills Thai country Culture or an authentic Isan city atmosphere. However, while the town itself has limited attractions and activities for visitors, the provincial countryside is filled with ancient ruins, many of which are no more than rubble, but include the Khmer sanctuary of Phanom Rung, one of the best-preserved Angkorian Temples in Southeast Asia and a premier Destination for witnessing sunrises and sunsets when the sun is aligned with the doorways of the temple.

Wat Khao Angkhan walkaround, Buriram, Thailand
Wat Khao Angkhan is a modern temple in Buriram province built in multiple styles, including Khmer, Thai, and Chinese. It is not too far from Phanom Rung and Muang Tam ancient Khmer temples. Like Phanom Rung, it also sits atop an extinct volcano, and it affords views of the surrounding countryside. At the base of the temple complex (not pictured) is a 29 meter long reclining buddha that's impressive in its own right. Local tours may take you here. Otherwise you need your own transport. The roads aren't the best, but they could be worse.

According to an old Thai tradition, a city pillar had to be built upon the establishment of a new city. King Rama I had the Bangkok city pillar erected near the Temple of the Emerald Buddha on Sunday, 21 April, 1782, with the citys horoscope inside. The original pillar was made of cassia wood known as Chaiyaphruek, measuring 75 cm. in diameter and 27 cm. high. In the reign of King Rama IV, the old dilapidated pillar was replaced by a new one made of the same kind of wood, measuring 270 cm. high and standing on a base of 175 cm. wide, sheltered by a Prang-shaped shrine as it appears today. The shrine also houses images of protective deities including Thepharak, Chaopho Ho Klong, Phra Suea Mueang, Phra Song Mueang, Chaopho Chetakhup and Phra Kan Chai Si.

Prasat Muang Tam, Buriram, Northeastern Thailand
Prasat Muang Tam is located in Buriram Province, just 8 kilometes from Prasat Phanom Rung. Prasat Muang Tam is a Hindu religious monument and constructed for the Hindu God Shiva. It was constructed some 1000 years ago and abandoned some 700 years ago. In 1997 the Fine Arts Department commenced reconstruction of the site.
