Sarnen, capital of canton Obwalden, Switzerland
Sarnen, capital city of the Swiss canton of Obwalden, has an elevation of 473m (1,420 feet) and a population of 10,400 (2021). The town is 20 km south of Lucerne, on the northern shore of Lake Sarnen. Here, the language you will mostly hear spoken is either a local dialect based on German, or one of the official versions of German.
Sarnen is a pleasant small town with an old quarter. Apart from the cantonal Town Hall (Rathaus) there are three important religious buildings: the parish church (St Peter and St Paul) and an ossuary. The church of St Martin and the entire town, along with the Landenberg Armoury, are designated as Swiss Heritage sights.
Sarnen can be reached on the Lucerne to Interlaken train, or by car on the A8, a journey time of 20 minutes from Lucerne.
The short video give you an overview of this lovely town with many attractive buildings, including the museum, cantonal library, the old gymnasium and other schools and the intriguing Hexenturm (Witch Tower).
All this is in a beautiful setting, with a backdrop of snowy mountains, the Sarner lake, Seefeld Park and a small river.
Sarnen Switzerland 4K Beautiful Obwalden City
Sarnen is the beautiful Capital City of the Canton of Obwalden in Switzerland. The town lies at the northern end of Lake Sarnen in the Sarneraatal valley, not far from Stans and Lucerne.
The most important sights are Landenberg Castle, the village square, the Grundacherhaus and the Obwalden Historical Museum in the former Sarnen barracks. The Witches' Tower, built in 1291, is also worth seeing. It is one of the few remaining castle towers from the time when the Swiss Confederation was founded and is a protected monument of the Central Swiss Heritage Society.
Sarnen may have been settled as early as the early Bronze Age, i.e. in the first centuries after 2000 BC. The name Sarnen is of pre-Celtic origin and contains the Indo-Germanic root ser or sar meaning flowing water.
On 14 August 1468, a devastating fire destroyed at least twenty-two houses, including the town hall built in 1418. Brother Klaus is said to have extinguished the fire from the Flüeli with a sign of the cross.

Sarnen is a small historic town, a municipality, and the capital of the canton of Obwalden situated on the northern shores of Lake Sarnen (German: Sarnersee) in Switzerland. It has a population of just over 10,000 and is surrounded by countryside and mountains. Sarnen is located 20 km south of Lucerne.
Sarnen is situated at an altitude of 471 m (1,545 ft) on the northern shore of Lake Sarnen (German: Sarnersee) along the outflow of the Sarner Aa. Lake Sarnen covers approximately an area of 7.5 km2 (2.9 sq mi). The town is surrounded by mountain chains and a protected bog can be found nearby. The most well-known mountain close to Sarnen is Mount Pilatus with an elevation of 2,132 m (6,995 ft).
Sarnen has an area, (as of the 2004/09 survey) of 73.12 km2 (28.23 sq mi).[3] Of this area, about 39.0% is used for agricultural purposes, while 50.7% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 6.0% is settled (buildings or roads) and 4.3% is unproductive land. In the 2004/09 survey a total of 260 ha (640 acres) or about 3.6% of the total area was covered with buildings, an increase of 78 ha (190 acres) over the 1980/81 amount. Of the agricultural land, 46 ha (110 acres) is used for orchards and vineyards, 1,554 ha (3,840 acres) is fields and grasslands and 1,665 ha (4,110 acres) consists of alpine grazing areas. Since 1980/81 the amount of agricultural land has decreased by 172 ha (430 acres). Over the same time period the amount of forested land has increased by 27 ha (67 acres). Rivers and lakes cover 111 ha (270 acres) in the municipality.
