The history and present of Sargans has always been determined by traffic. As a double gate to the Alps with access from the Seez and Rhine valleys, prehistoric, Roman, medieval and modern traces of settlement are found in a small area. The railway built in 1858/59 as well as modern roads and motorways underline the good traffic situation, the open attitude and a diverse network of contacts of the people of Sargans in the near and far. From the 1st to the 3rd century there was a Roman estate in Sargans. Even then, ore was mined on the Gonzen. The Gonzen iron mine was in operation until 1966 and can be visited today. It has been an important economic factor for Sargans and the Sarganserland for centuries.

Hiking the Via Alpina | Sargans - Weisstannen - Foopass - Elm
Mountain hut life, alpine passes, breathtaking views, and Swiss cuisine: these memories make up the first two days of my Via Alpina hike in Switzerland.
This summer I start my great adventure across Switzerland: hiking the Via Alpina green trail. The first two stages of the Via Alpina hike go from Sargans to Weisstannen before climbing Foopass and ending in Elm, in canton Glarus.
As this year's Via Alpina explorer, I will hike 260km across Switzerland from Sargans to Kandersteg, climbing 15,000m over 9 alpine passes. Over the next three months, I will hike every other weekend, building to an eight-day hike in August. It will be full of wild camping, Swiss culture and physical challenges.

Take a ride
Round tour from Sargans up to Gonzen ladders (2023/04/10)
4 3/4h T4 round tour from Sargans over the Gonzen ladders, a little less than 1,000 height meters up and down. This is a good tour to do in April, when the mountain tops are still covered in snow and the tree leaves haven't grown yet. It takes you 2 hours to climb up to the ladders in the forest, and you'll have practically no view at all once the leaves are here. Most of the tour is very easy and hardly qualifies for an alpine hike, but once you get to the ledge that leads to the ladders, you jump from levels T1/2 to T4. The ground drops away on the right, and the ladders are iron and cold to grip. You shouldn't do this part when it's rainy, I imagine the ladders can get very slippery when wet. The rest of the tour is comfortable, with sweeping views across the Rhine valley, a very nice waterfall on the way, and a chance to sit on the ramparts of Sargans Castle and drink a nice beer at the end of it.

Swiss Hikes: Walenstadt - Sargans (Switzerland) (Episode 33) Lumix S5
I always loved stills photography and am active as a semi-professional for quite some time. However, recently I also became interested in taking up videography. Since I love hiking in Switzerland (where I live), I decided to combine these two interests.
My idea is to create a video whenever I take a hike (usually 2-3 times a month) and publish it on YouTube, so anyone can enjoy the beautiful nature of Switzerland, as well as my progress as a videographer.
In terms of equipment, I use a Lumix S5 with the Panasonic 20-60 3.5-5.6 lens.

Solo hiking and wildcamping in Switzerland | Via Alpina | Sargans to Engelberg | 130 KM | 5 Days
In early July 2023 I hiked the first 6 stages of the Via Alpina Trail in Switzerland, in 5 days. Starting in Sargans and finishing in Engelberg. These hiking days were hot with midday temperatures hitting around 33°C. But despite the excessive sweating and countless bottle refills I absolutely enjoyed the trip and the fresh mountain streams now felt better then ever before :)
This was the third time I hiked a section of the Via Alpina. In 2021 I walked from Lauterbrunnen to Montreux (you can watch my previous video, link below) and in 2022 from Engelberg to Grindelwald.
After the hike, shown in this video, I also hiked/ran the section from Grindelwald to Lauterbrunnen, which made me complete the Via Alpina Switzerland. I didn't record this part of the trail because I wanted to pack as light as possible and sadly the views weren't that great due to the rainy, cloudy weather that day.

My dogs and I hiked 21kms and climbed 1500m to get to this peak. Sargans Switzerland is full of beautiful places
